Happy Birthday to Alex!

Phew! Alex's ABC Birthday party is done! I always stress out way too much about these things (yes I know I bring it on myself, what with my procrastination).  This time was no exception.  Although I did kind of relax by the end of everything, and I think everyone had a good time.

Sadly, I did not get the cake decorated last night.  Happily, Target had the stuff I needed to do it this morning, and while I did not have a proper frosting tip, a small hole in the plastic baggy seemed to work out okay.  Sadly, the top part of the big "A" on the cake melted in the sun and off the cake.  Sadder still, the batteries in the camera were dead and I did not get a picture of it before hand. :( Happily, it still tasted good, and I hope to take picture of him with his stuff when he gets back from the Father and Son Campout tomorrow.

Sadly, I was behind (and lost my keys in my closet) and didn't get to the park until 10:15 (it was supposed to start at 10)  Happily, my husband is wonderful and helpful and patient with me. Happier still, it was at the park and thus, the two on-time families that were already there had something to occupy their kids. Sadly, I left the door open and the helium ballons I'd just gotten at the dollar store flew away. Happily, no one missed them and the other moms were happy to help me get things set up while the kidlets played on the toys

Happily, the games of ABC singing time, Fishing for fun stuff, and handprint/name lisence plates were all enjoyable activities. Sadly, I forgot to bring the paint at first, so the eating of things was broken up.  On the up side though, the pizza was yummy and we had just enough. (go hubby!)   Sadly, the wind made it difficult to light the candles. Happily though, they were super cute big ones that actually cost LESS than the regular ones, and by the time we were done singing Happy Birthday all three were lit and he got to blow them out! There was also extra cupcakes/ cake!  :)

Sadly things went a little long.  Happily though, Alex had fun opening the presents (and wanted to play with each one.  Never mind there were more present).   Still sadly, the camera was dead. *cry* Happily though, it was a very happy birthday for my littlest boy.

I still can't believe he's already three.  I could swear he was just born.

*happy cry*

One dollar! I want one dollar!

Oh, the WOES of being a little boy.  We just heard the ice cream truck go by.  I wish I could block their music from my house!  The following just ensued.  (This is mostly correct, some of this might have been in different orders. Several things were repeated more than twice):

"Mom!  It's the ice cream truck!  I need one dollar!"

"No David, we're not getting ice cream today."

"But Mom!  It's right there.  It's only one dollar!"

"No David.  Not today."

"But why Mom?! That's mean!  Why do you never let me?  WHY?"

"Because you don't need ice cream today."

Wash rinse, repeat the same conversation a couple times... until a good lather is worked up, complete with "you're means" and such.

"Mom you are little, Little, LITTLE!  Like a baby!  You are mean!  Why do you never ever ever let me get them? WHY? You always never let me get anything!

I don't know why!

It's because you're mean, that's why.  Mom's never ever do that. They're nice.  Why can you not be nice to me every time? That's being rude if you don't do that. Pleeeeeeeeease? "

"David I told you, you don't need it.  If I'm going to get ice cream, I'm going to get it for a better price at the store.

Now more sorrowful:
"I really wanted something, and you wouldn't  get it for me and I really wanted it and that's being mean.  Why do you never let me
get things from the ice cream truck even though we don't need it.  And I never get it. Why? Why???

*sobs*

"If you don't let me do things that's rude.  Like if I ask if I can go to the park and you say, "no," that's rude.  And mean.  And you don't let me do things!"

"David if you're going to throw a tantrum go to you room, or calm down."
He calms down.
"But why mom? Why can't I have ice cream from the ice cream truck."

"Because I'm not going to spend so much on such a small amount of ice cream.  It wastes money."

"But you waste money all the time!"

"I do?"

"Yeah."

I am incredulous.  "On what!? On food?"

"Yep."

"You mean the food for dinner and breakfast and lunch?"

"Yes. You get the food and that wastes the money."

Oh, the logic of a 6 year old!

"David we get the food and then use it up."

"But you always get ice cream and I never get any! Ever!

"David, when was the last time I got ice cream just for me?

"I don't know.  But I really just want some.  And you never ever get it for me!"

"Not from the ice cream truck, no.  But you can get more ice cream at the store for the same price as the ice cream truck."

"Why do you never be nice, Mom? You never be nice!"

"I am."
He starts looking defeated.

"I know, but sometimes you do. Why don't you stop it? Why?"

"David, I already told you.  I'm not going to spend so much on one little bit of ice cream, when I can go to the store and get a lot more for just a couple dollars more."

"One dollar is cheap.  It really is . One dollar is cheap, Mom!"

"Do you have a dollar?"

"No."

"Well neither do I for that."

"Yes you do. You have one."

"Well, I need to keep that for emergencies."

"Well, I do have a dollar?"

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. In my piggy bank.   Dad says I can't spend it, but it takes a long loooong time to save it.  That wastes it. So I should just start spending it."

"You're sure about that?"

"Yeah. I should just spend it.  On ice cream."

I'm now trying to suppress a laugh. "Really?"

"Yes."

"Well, you still don't need ice cream today.  Besides, it's cold.  Why would you want ice cream on a cold day?"

"Because I like it!

We then talked about possibly earning ice cream by practicing his writing  (he's got A's in everything but writing. That is a C).   He still maintains that it's not fair, and that other kids down by the school get stuff from the ice cream truck everyday.  He was still pretty upset about not getting to get it from a truck when his dad told him again (when he got home) but he did apologize for throwing a fit.  I think it's more the novelty of getting it from the ice cream truck that the actual ice cream itself. Oh, how hard it must be to be 6!

Ha!  While going through this he just said this: "Mom. I hear the ice cream truck in my mind, and I know where it's going."

LOL!

Cleaning is fun! Cleaning is fun...

I'm needing a break from the cleaning/ packing/ last minute stuff.  Here's where I stand.

Bathroom sinks and toilets: check.

Bathtub: HA!

David and Alex's room:check.

My room: check.

Laundry - 1/2 check,

Dishes, check.  Counters: uh...

6 year old doing all 6 of his chores: CHECK!

Happy, playing boys: check.

Packing: 1/2 check.

Floors: look good au natural?

Fridge: yeah...

Cluttery paper: about that...

Frontroom/landing ground for everything that doesn't have a place: HA!

Elsa's stuff: will get to it!

Get new windshield wipers installed: will get to it?

Wrap remaining presents: getting there.

Shower: tonight?

Three French Fries :)

Hooray!  I found my cell phone!  Where was it, you ask?  In the boy's closet.   I'm not exactly sure why it was there, but it was a bit sticky, so I'm guessing it was Alex who deposited it there.

Oh, funny thing for the day:

David and I were singing the 12 Days of Christmas.  We were at the last time through, and at about 5 golden rings, I started pausing at the last word to let him fill it in.  It went like this:

Me: Fiiiiive Golden....
David: RINGS!

Me: Four Calling...
David: Birds

Me: Three French...
David: Fries

Me: Two Turtle...
David: Ducks

Me: And a Partridge in a
David: Apple Tree

Gotta love the kid.  He is pretty busy today.  Yesterday, we came home from church to find presents on our door step, and the later that night SOME MORE people showed up with a big box and bag for each of the boys.  What the heck!?  You could easily see into the bags, so I let them look at those.   In David's was a set of walkie talkies.   Of course, he was super excited about this and wanted to open them immediately.  I said NO WAY!  Not tonight.  Maybe we can take them to Utah on Tuesday, but not tonight.  I heard all about the walkie talkies for the better part of an hour, with all the pleading and whining and "you're so mean!"s.  I did not give in though!  (Go me!)

So... right before dinner he comes to me saying, "Look Mom!"  and what does he have but the forbidden walkie talkies.  Yeah.  This is exasperation at it's finest.  I took them away and informed him that he would now not get to play with them until we got back home from Utah next week.  This brought on all the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth.  I have a lot of cleaning to do before I go, so I told him he would have the chance to earn the right to bring them to Utah (so he and Dillan could play with them), if he did 6 chores for me today.  So far, he's cleaned a bathroom, picked up is room, and is currently working on the garbage.    He also chose to wash windows, help with laundry and help with the dishes tonight.    We'll see if those happen or not.

In the mean time I'm doing laundry, laundry and more laundry  (so I can pack, of course).   Then there's the tub, vacuuming, floors, and maybe the fridge if I'm feeling really ambitious.  I still need to work on a new baptism certificate from the Stake and get it to Elsa too, and do some last minute wrapping.  And pack the car. I'm really not sure how I'm going to fit all with all the presents.  I am excited to go to Utah for Christmas though.  All my siblings will be there this year, so it'll be great! :)  Let's just hope I can navigate the snow storm that's supposed to be coming through tomorrow. (I'm driving up a couple days early and my mom got a ticket for Jeremy to fly in Christmas Eve afternoon)

David's "Artwork"

So... we went to church today. Alex got in the car through the passenger side door, so we didn't notice what was lurking on his door on the driver's side. When Jeremy went to get him out, he noticed the erm... artwork... adorning the side and back of the van. It was drawn with a rock, which not only left nice white markings on the maroon paint, but also some dandy scratches. Apparently he and the neighbor girl decided that this would be a great form of entertainment yesterday.

Jeremy says this is retribution for my peeling the vinyl off the top of my dad's car so I could twirl on top of it. (I was only 5!) I shudder to think of what will be retribution for what HE did as a child. In any case, David will get to clean it off, write, "I will not draw on the van" 20 times, and be grounded from the computer for a week.

I looked on my van and what did I see... chalk rock writing staring at me.Collapse )

Yep, it's scratched alright.Collapse )

I wonder who did this. D-A-V...Collapse )

Made a mistake... gotta cross it out!Collapse )

Let's not forget the back either!Collapse )

I love my kids, I love my kids, I love my kids...

He DID say something very sweet today though.  I was finishing up my poster for primary, when he came and sat beside me on the bed.

"Do you know what's beautiful?" he asked.
"What?"
"You are, and I am, because we love each other.  And it's beautiful."

It is beautiful, isn't it?

I really DO love my kids after all.

Another one!

I just wrote another entry to buck this once a month/ season trend.

And it is gone.

Poof!  Into thin air.

*sigh*

It's a shame too, because it was fairly amusing.

Oh well.

As Aurora said this morning, "You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit!"

So it's been a while since I've put anything here.

It's been quite the summer, with David still in Kindergarten, getting 2 weeks off and starting 1st grade at a new Magnet Empowerment school.   I'm still not such a fan of the gas needed to get him to and from said school, but I'm really quite impressed with the school itself.  I'm also quite happy with the ALL DAY school day.  I thought this would help with Alex's naps, but he's decided that he'd rather not take them.  I still try, but it's feeling like a losing battle.

Today at lunch I was watching my dvr'd episode of Dancing with the Stars (don't you judge me! It's fun!)  Every episode starts with, "Liiiiiiiiive from Hollywood, it's Dancing with the Stars!"  I'm half listening/half watching while I make the quesadillas for lunch.  We get up to the table to eat, when he starts this swishing side to side movement with is arms up and curved (like he's dancing) and says "Dancing with the Stars"  or rather "Danding widda Staws" with the same inflections and everything.  I grabbed the video camera and tried to get him to do it again, but of course, that was too much to ask. :) Oh well.   It was still cute.

In other happenings today, this morning I used up the last of our sliced wheat bread making french toast for breakfast. (Had I realized I didn't have another loaf in the freezer, I might have re-though that decision.)  Trying to be frugal, I decided I had the yeast, I had the flour, and all the other ingredients on the back of the yeast package; I would make some homemade bread!  Nostalgic thoughts of fluffy, tasty bread baking in my grandma's house wafted into my mind, complete with the aroma and the taste of that fresh, hot yumminess topped with homemade strawberry jam. (I had the jam too, after all!)

So, I dug all the pots and pans out of my lower cupboard to gain access to my breadmaker.  (A gift from my grandma - she had 2 and just didn't need that many)  I honestly don't think I've used it since before Alex was born.  Alex is now 2 and almost 1/2! I set it all up and started my bread. I put all the wet ingredients in, in the order it tells you to, then measured out the flour, topped it with the yeast, closed that puppy, plugged it in and pushed buttons until I had it set on "Dough".

After the prescribed 1hr and 20 minutes it beeped and came to get it out and bake it in the oven.
There didn't seem to be that much for a 2 lb loaf, but I put it in my sprayed pan and let it rise - or rather half leaven, kind of - for a while anyway.  I even tried putting it in just a warm oven with the boiling water.  Yeah.  Not much leavening going on.  Oh well.  I baked it anyway.

At least it still smelled good.

It even tastes half way decent.

It's just heavy as a 3 lb weight!

Still, both my kids liked it.  Alex particularly liked it with the homemade strawberry jam.  I think next time I might need to knead it some more and THEN let it rise.  Or make sure the milk/water is warm enough to activate the yeast.  Sigh.   Another one of those practice makes better things!

Lookie what I found!

So I went to post something new, and it asked if it wanted me to bring up the previous saved draft.  I said yes and this is what I found:

It seems I'm on a 1 or 2 actual posts a month kick.

A lot has happened though, in my defense.  This time of year is always hectic.    Starting in April:
April 10 - David's birthday
April 24 0 M-i-l birthday
May 14 - Alex's birthday
May 25th - our Anniversary
Memorial Day
May 29th - by brother's birthday
June 2nd - Jeremy's birthday
June 11 - MY mom's birthday

Then of course, there's school, and Alex being his uber-curious toddler self.  Oh, and the small bit about trying to get my business up and running, running.  I seem to have motivation for it in spurts.
I think part of the reason for the down turn on this blog is t....

Yeah... I 'm so good at finishing things.  NOT!

You Are A Good Mom

By Melanie Bailey

That time of year is here again.

 Mother's Day.

Mother's Day can be a tricky thing.

It is a day to honor our mothers, to show them that we love them.  All too often though, a card listing the best-mom-in-the-world attributes, or a well-meaning sermon can leave a mom feeling not so special; not the best, and well... guilty.

Guilt is a common feeling among mothers.

We do our best, and yet it never seems to add up to the large than life Supermom we imagine we should be.  Perhaps it's that we compare our worst to other people's best, or that we promised ourselves we would be different than our mothers (ha!), or maybe we just feel the enormous amount of responsibility for molding these little beings.  It is a big job, worthy of respect and hard work.  But if you've ever been less than admirable, or your children have, it doesn't make you a failure as a mother.

You are a good mom, whether you believe it or not.

If you've ever stayed up all night with a crying baby, and managed to be showered, fully dressed and chipper the next day, great for you!  If however, you were unkempt and irritable the next day (well, let's face it, it was at least another week), and yet managed to keep said child fed and changed, you are still a good mom.

If you love being at home with your kids, and have your days all planned out, complete with age appropriate activities and lessons scheduled, great for you. But if you've ever wished that you could escape the house and the kids and have adult interaction at a paying job, you're still a good mom.

If you bring your kids to daycare or the babysitter and work hard to pay the bills and feed your family, good for you.  But if you've ever wished you could just be there for all the little things they do, or if you like your job and you're grateful to have it, you're still a good mom.

If you've ever held your tongue when you wanted to scream at your child, great for you.  But if you've ever lost it and screamed at your child... and later had to apologize and really mean it, you're still a good mom.

If you feed your child three well balanced meals a day (and they eat it!), good for you.  But if you let them have cold cereal for dinner because you really don't know what you're going to make, and you know they won't eat half of whatever it would have been anyway, you're still a good mom.

If you read the suggested 20 minutes+ to your child every day, make sure their homework is done and volunteer at their school, great for you!  But if you're lucky to tell the same story at bedtime, or look in their backpack occasionally, you're still a good mom.

If you've managed to keep all the good things your mom did and not repeat the things that weren't, congratulations!  But if you've found yourself saying the EXACT SAME THING your mother did because you now get that it's just easier, you're still a good mom.

If you were totally confident and open when having "the talk" with your children, good for you.  But if you were freaked out at having to explain everything when you weren't sure how to, and you weren't quite ready to, you're still a good mom.

If your kids still give you hugs and say, "Thank you," and, "I love you, Mom", wonderful!  But if you're lucky to get any acknowledgement at all, and get an angry, "I hate you" when you say no, you're still a good mom.

If you've ever taught your children to be honest and trustworthy, and they were when it would have been easy not to be, that's awesome.  But if you've caught them in a lie (big or small) and then let them deal with the repercussions, you're still a good mom.

The list could go on and on.  We all have things that we would do better, given the chance, or the energy or the motivation.  (They really should sell those last two in bottles.)  The time is short though, and for better or worse, we are our children's mothers.

Whether they're perfectly clean with organized rooms, or grimy with all the everything strewn across the floor (and playing with the box).

Whether you've stayed up late waiting for your teenager to get home, or fell asleep trying.

Whether you've had a hard time letting them go, or could hardly wait for them to be in school, or out of the house, you are a good mom.

You are.

Because the thing we all really need most in life is love, and if nothing else, you can LOVE your children;
even when you don't like them;
even when they've made a huge mess (literally or figuratively);
and even when it breaks your heart.

You are a good mom.

And don't let anyone (including yourself) tell you otherwise.

Happy Mothers Day!
