Android Solar System Explorer App.

First thing you'll notice when you open up Solar System Explorer is how great it looks. This is a seriously polished app, with beautiful 3D models of every planet in our solar system, the moons of each planet, and each satellite the United States has launched. There's full pinch-to-zoom on all of the models as well as swiping support so you can change your perspective, too.

You move from planet to planet (or moon to moon) using pictures along the bottom of the screen. All of our planets are there, ordered from closest to farthest from the sun, and on the very end, you can get to the satellites. When you pick a planet, the pictures at the bottom of the screen change, and if the planet has any moons, images of those moons appear so you can see models and read up on them, should you choose to.

Aside from all of that, there's also an incredible treasure trove of information at your fingertips, all of it a button push away. When you've got a heavenly body selected, you're shown its general information by default, but should you leave this screen, tapping the eyeball will take you back to it. The little bar graph looking button shows you stats for your planet, all in relation to Earth.

Finally, the upside down peace sign tells you information about the structure of your planet and the 3D model changes to reflect said information. It's really quite cool seeing Earth broken up into differently colored layers and an explanation about what's going on in this beautiful blue-green ball we call home. (Plus, it reminds me of elementary school science class.)

Solar System Explorer also gives you the opportunity to just admire the solar system by hiding the information panel and zooming in and out. The full-screen experience is quite incredible, and at times like these, I wonder why I didn't do more to become something like an astronaut or work for NASA. This might "just" be an Android app, but it certainly instills a sense of awe in me.

If you're someone who has even a slight interest in our big, mysterious solar system, check this app out. It's great to just poke around in, but it's also chock full of such solid information, I don't see any reason why it couldn't be used as an educational tool, too.

So I rearranged my living room over the past weekend and decided to retire my (gasp) 9-year-old receiver. Wasn't looking to spend a fortune, but surround sound is a must, Internet access is a plus. Ended up going with The Wirecutter's recommendation of the Onkyo TX-NR509. It's got a rear Ethernet port (if that's how you roll), or an optional Wifi dongle that plugs into the front USB port -- and an added bonus -- a companion Android application.

Let's really start off by saying that home audio is a pretty personal and finicky thing, and your setup will determine the usefulness of features. I've got an Xbox 360 and a Logitech Revue to handle most of my multimedia functions, so there's a good bit of what's the in Onkyo app -- specifically the music playback --  that I'll never use. You've pretty much got full remote capability, including switching inputs and sources. The app's layout's pretty intuitive, as are the settings. I'm not going to walk you through them as, again, your setup will vary from mine, and chances are you're a proper nerd and can do it yourself.

(I'll mention that the Onkyo has things like Internet radio and DLNA streaming, which is nice, but the on-screen UIs are so horrid that you'll likely not want to touch them.)

No, the one shining feature of the Onkyo Android app -- for me, anyway -- is the ability to change  the volume from another room. I've got kids. Two of 'em. The eldest is 5, and she can rock the Logitech Harmony One remote just fine to get her Dora on. But she's also going deaf, I'm convinced, because the TV will get louder and louder as she watches. Thanks to the Onkyo app, there's no more getting up from what I'm doing. No more arguing. I just turn the damn thing down, and no one's the wiser. (I can do the same thing with the Google TV Remote app, by the way.)

So that's what I'm rocking in the living room now, all connected like. (And it sounds good, too.) Onkyo says the app's compatible with all network AV receivers released since 2010, as well as the TX-8050 Network Stereo Receiver and the T-4070 Network Stereo Tuner. You may need to do a firmware update (mine took about 5 minutes) to get things going.

Updated Claystone 3D Launcher – Now With More 3D!

For those not familiar, we've attempted to go beyond the standard launcher apps by placing all your content (App Drawer, File Browser, Web Browser, etc) into panels that can be easily stacked atop another and swiped through. We've also brought a fair bit of outside content - YouTube, NY Times, Guardian, etc - into the mix, as well.

There's a host of new stuff in this latest update (more regional content, custom panel backgrounds, etc) but mainly, based on the feedback we got here, we've completely changed how you navigate with panels. With just a tap of the center launch bar icon, you get a 3D overview of all open panels.

We've got great feedback so far, but would love to hear what you think about the latest build. Everyone here has always been a tremendous help in shaping the app and we hope you enjoy the changes!

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation Preview

Gameloft in the last campaign, were all at the Android HD games for only 99 cents available, I immediately struck me and a couple of good games for my HTC sensational indulgence. One of them was playing Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, I'm amazed at the graphics really. The mobile games look from game to game from getting better and Gameloft has a very big part. And finally, is the successor of Gameloft in Black Pegasus, and that Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation.

The graphics and gameplay of the third part again to see much better than it really is still the second part of the case. I'm really curious how it all on my HTC sensation is or even look at a Tablet. Gameloft also promises that nation is already falling due this Fall. I'm looking forward, do you?

It has also not escaped the attention of navigation software makers and you now have a choice of apps, free and commercial, which can guide you wherever you need to go with all of the features you expect in a standalone unit included.

As navigation software moves towards a completely free model, Google itself has started the ball rolling by offering Google Maps Navigation for free in America and the UK. But it is not the best solution around, and there are other worthy alternatives to consider if you are willing to pay.

Co-Pilot Live is one of the premier navigation apps on the iPhone and Windows Mobile platforms and has now graced Android at the same budget price level. The UK and Ireland version is just £26.99 and you can pay extra to receive live traffic and fuel price information. The feature set is comparable to standalone GPS systems and even if you go for the full set including the live services it still works out cheaper than most of the competition. The software lends itself well to large touch screened devices and in our tests Co-Pilot performed admirably on the Nexus One, HTC Hero and HTC Magic so it gets a big thumbs up from us.

With Android being open source it is natural to expect the same type of development on the GPS side and AndNav2 (above) is one such example. It is, however, not easy to use for the average user, but people who require specialised mapping for specific areas may find the time worthwhile to create TilePacks for the app. On the subject of free, we can’t forget the excellent Google Maps which is either bundled with the Android device itself or available as a free download and now offers full turn-by-turn navigation with voice in the UK and US.

Sygic is one of the lesser known navigation software developers, but for 49 Euros you can pick up Mobile Maps which includes real-time traffic, safety camera warnings and full mapping for the UK and Ireland. The interface is clean and the system works well in general use. It is also surprising to see so many other features included such as lane guidance and as such the whole package builds into a solution which is very good value for

Telenav produces a solution which is ideal for the occasional traveller. It works on a subscription basis and at £5 / month could be useful if you only need GPS navigation at certain times during the year. The main mapping interface is simplistic and does not give an indication of what is beneath the rather plain surface. There are some expected features, but it’s fair to say that this is not a solution for the individual wanting all of the latest GPS gimmicks. Ultimately though it does work quite well and is memory efficient so it definitely has a place in the ever growing Android navigation market.

avigation can of course take many forms and BreadCrumbz exemplifies the possibilities of the Android platform. It allows you to create your own routes using photographs for each step. You can add commentary to each step and it even works within buildings such as museums. The possibilities are endless for companies to use an app like this to create virtual tour guides and when used in conjunction with GPS it can make any experience much more pleasurable and informative. It is also free which makes it one you simply have to try.

GPS on Android is not just about software either. Garmin Asus has come up with the nuvifone A50 which is an Android powered smartphone with navigation promoted as its main feature. Not only do you get a 3.0 Megapixel camera that can geo-tag each picture, but a car kit is included alongside a 3.5” screen to make the navigation experience as complete as possible out of the box. Garmin has a long history in the navigation world and is well placed to create a device that feels and acts like a standalone system, and with the help of Asus, a smartphone that does all of the other clever things you expect in 2010.

As you can see, the navigation options available on the Android platform are already plentiful and in some cases priced very competitively or even free. With an emphasis on large touch screen design and powerful hardware features the smartphones running Android are well placed to make mobile navigation as easy to use as it is on standalone GPS units. With the operating system constantly being upgraded and the promise of Google Navigation being available worldwide, Android could soon become the platform of choice for mobile navigation.

Sonic CD headed to Android for the holidays

Veteran games publisher SEGA has proven time and again that it's not afraid of dusting off an old classic for a re-release on modern systems. The latest to join that list is Sonic CD, with the recent news that SEGA will port the game on Android, iOS and other platforms in time for the holiday season.

Sonic CD was originally released on the SEGA CD back in 1993, but has traditionally been left out of SEGA compilations up until now. The game sees the company's spiky mascot travelling through time to correct the evil meddlings of Dr Eggman, saving all manner of furry critters along the way.

Also, SEGA says the re-release of Sonic CD will include the original Japanese soundtrack. For those of you wondering what that means... well, it means this.

How to Get Your Old Android Market Back

After all this Touchpad madness and some other hot news, I got back to writing and been reading that a lot of members would want to go back to older Market application; XDA member Omnichron show us a way to revert back to older version by replacing some files on your Android device´s directory. You will have to uninstall and re install some apk´s, Dev does not specify if your device must be rooted or not so let us know how it works for you by leaving your feed back.

Using Labs in Google Maps Android

One of the best perks of having an Android phone is Google Maps and free turn by turn navigation for Android. A part of Google Maps that we often forget about is the Labs section. In Google's own words "Labs is a testing ground for experimental features that aren't quite ready for primetime. They may change, break or disappear at any time." They are also pretty darn cool, offering things like a map scale bar to estimate distance, or a measuring tool to actually measure it, and of course the pre-caching of an area we've talked about before.

Enabling any of these is easy. Open the Maps application on your phone, hit the menu button, then tap "More." Choose "Labs" from the top of the list. Tap on any of the Labs features to toggle it on and off.
