15/05/09 (from Turkey to Greece) - Samos
I left Selcuk for Kusadasi early in the morning to catch my ferry to Samos. I was told that I could take another ferry from Samos on the same day to Santorini but only found out that I had to stay a night in Samos. I walked around with my heavy backpack and felt so exhausted. I know Samos is an expensive island and I was running out of money pretty quickly due to expensive ferry rides.
One woman approached and proposed me with a double room for 25 euros and I managed to convince her to let me have the room for 17 euros. The rooms (en suite) was really nice with TV, coffee maker, small table and chairs by the window. I spent a couple of hours walking around in the afternoon and sort out my ferry ticket and then I went back to my room for a nap. I just wasn't feeling too well for many days already. Watery eyes, sore throat and running nose. I think it was hay fever.
I went to the seafront in the evening for sunset. I wrote diary, listened to the music and watched people. It was a good evening.
I left early in the morning for Paros and then another ferry to Santorini.
16/05/09 (From Samos, Paros to Santorini)
I love Santorini. It's such a romantic and beautiful place. I talked to a girl very briefly at the port upon arrival and I felt that she wasn't happy. I don't know why but I thought about her when I was in the hotel room that night. I guess she might have just ended a relationship and that's why she was travelling alone. I had a swim after I did some shopping at the supermarket and watched TV for the first time since I hit the road. It was really nice. I rented a scooter (8 euro for 24 hours) the following morning and rode towards Fira. The weather wasn't as good and it was quite cold but I felt good in Santorini. The beauty of this island was just so overwhelming. I thought about what happened in the past one year and what my family had to say about my trip. I appreciated what I saw that very moment. When I first told my youngest sister about this trip, she was so supportive. She told me if this is what I wanted to do, I should just go ahead and don't worry about my dad and things at home. I didn't have the guts to tell my dad about this trip and my another sister actually volunteered to do that for me. I was surprised that my dad didn't say much about it and I prayed so hard that everything is going to be alright when I am away. I went to Singapore and stayed over at friend DK's place and he drove me to the airport in the morning. I checked in and then we went for breakfast. CY appeared out of nowhere and that surprised me. He travelled all the way from Boon Lay to the airport to see me off early in the morning, I was touched. I am grateful to have them in my life. I have always wanted to go to Santorini with someone I love to see this romantic place but I still don't have anyone. I am not complaining, of course. I am sure that there are other places worth going with someone special. Getting around Santorini on my own with a scooter was quite fun. I enjoyed the time with myself. I talked to myself and laughed and cried. I felt free. Santorini is just as beautiful and romantic as ever!! I bumped into the girl that I met at the port when I went to see sunset in Oia. We ended up chatted quite a lot and later another guy joined us. It was a good sunset and with decent company. Joy just broke up with her boyfriend 2 months ago and decided to travel on her own for the first time. We shared our experience and laughed so much. At least I didn't feel lonely in this romantic place. I had great time in Santorini eventhough I was alone but I didn't feel lonely. I headed to Mykonos the next.
19/5/09 Paros
I left my hotel in the morning to catch my ferry to Mykonos only found out that the ferry was cancelled due to the rough sea. It was such a chaos. A lot of people squeezed in a small office trying to figure out what's going on and what to do.
I found out that there is not ferry going to Mykonos the following day. If I wanted to be in Mykonos the following day, the only way was to take a ferry to Paros in the afternoon, spend a night day and take another ferry from Paros to Mykonos the next day. I realised I was left with no choice but had to go to Paros. I was a bit upset since my stay in Mykonos was cut short. I was hoping to find a cheap accomodation as soon as I get off the ferry which I did. I saw the sign of Camping Nauossa and I immediately approached the guy (he had a sweet smile on his face!!!). I could stay in a tent for 5 euro a night and I was elated to hear that. George, the owner of the Camping drove me to the camp site. It was a beautiful place. I arrived the camp site in the evening. Since I couldn't write nor read in the tent, I decided to go and find George and chat with him. The camp site was really quiet since it's still the low season. I was invited to be seated in his summer office of which consists two chairs and a small table outdoor. It was so fun. We chatted for hours. I had great time on that island.
19/5/09 - 21/05/09 Mykonos
I spent a night in Mykonos and slept in a cabin. It was windy and cold at night but I loved the beautiful camp site by Paraga beach. I accidently cut my knee with a knife that was kept in my backpack on the day I arrived Mykonos. I bought this knife in Ho Chi Minh city with Michael and it was sooooooo sharp. (I swear that I will be more careful with it next time.) It had been almost a month and I felt so tired already. I longed to go home, have some nice food (especially some soup) and relax. I left for Athens in the afternoon on 21/05/09. I felt that my journey was coming to an end now. I had no energy left!!!

Cloud is in Santorini now!!!
It's like a dream come true. I have always wanted to come to this Island with a man I love but... I think I shouldn't wait any longer. There is a cheap flight and I want to come back to Europe again! So here I am!
Wishing myself a great time in Greek Islands and bring back sweet memories.
(I managed to land myself a private room with TV, fridge, bathtub and a pool for 12 euros. Though it's in Perissa, but I am renting a scooter anyway. So it doesn't really matter. For me to have a private room is a luxury. I am a typical backpacker, I won't pay too much for my room!!!) |

My trip in Turkey ends here in Selcuk. I went hiking when I was in Cappadocia and that was one of the best hikes for me. I saw really beautiful skies and gorgeous clouds that I couldn't resist taking countless pictures. I think Cappadocia has the most beautiful skies and clouds in the world. Well, the most beautiful I've ever seen so far. I spent quite a lot of time with this New Yorker Dru when I was in Cappadocia. When we were at the bus station waiting for her bus, she asked me what was the best part of my trip so far in Turkey, I told her it was the hike that I did on my own the other day at Love Valley. I felt myself and it felt so peaceful to just sit down on the grass and looked at the beautiful landscape. I did quite a lot when I was in Cappadocia, so I spent that last day there doing nothing. I went to Turkish night on my last night in Cappadocia. It was 50TL but I wanted to see 'Whirling Devrishes' and I know that was my last chance of doing that. I won't be able to see that in Pamukkale or Selcuk. So I went. It turned out the be one of the best performances I've ever seen. I didn't know much about whirling devrishes and never thought of going to see that when I am here until I heard about it from the English woman I met on the tour. I thought that was something I shouldn't miss for this Turkey trip. The 'dance' lasted for about 20 minutes and they did TWO spins. Every spin lasted approximately about 10 minutes. It blew my mind away! I was moved to tears when I see them spinning. Apparently that's a form of meditation. I was glad that I didn't give it a miss. Since it was a Turkish Night, you get to see some other dances as well as belly dancing. The belly dancer was one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. She was so so so sexy. Turkish Night ended at 12am (that's the first time I was out so late!) and I had a free ride back to my hotel which was 6km away. I was on the same minibus as those dancers and the 'whirling devrishes' and I managed to talk to them for about 10 minutes. As usual, extremely friendly people. I was so excited that I got to see them and talk to them after 'Turkish Night' and I couldn't sleep till 3am. There isn't much to see in Selcuk itself. People come to Selcuk for Ephesus. Of course, I went there. It wasn't as impressive as I thought and it cost 20TL to get in there. The Theatre itself was quite big but I prefer the one in Pamukkale. I spent the rest of the afternoon sleeping in my room (I am the only person in the dorm which is really good.). I met a girl at the pension, the girlfriend of the owner. She is from Hong Kong. After 4 years of on and off relationship with her Turkish boyfriend, she has decided to come and live in Selcuk with her Turkish boyfriend. The girl named Wanda same age as me has given up a teaching job in Melbourne to come to Turkey. We talked for a couple of hours just now and I really admired her courage. In Turkey, I see a lot of Asian women ended up with Turkish boyfriends and that makes me think of Echo and Jose as well as Hassan. I think I can never give up everything and live in Turkey or Morocco with my boyfriend. It takes a lot of courage to do that. I really liked Wanda. It was such a coincident that her best friend is from the same town as me, Sitiawan (about 15 minutes' drive away). It was such a pleasure to get to know Wanda. I enjoyed our chats and I know definitely we will keep in touch. I hope she finds her happiness in Turkey and what she wants in life. I have been wanted to have a Turkish bath since I came to Turkey but haven't been able to do so since I had my period for such a long time. I finally went to Hamman today. I was such an experience. I was told that it was a mixed Hamman and I will be 'washed' by men when I was there. I immediately said that I didn't want to have it. That elderly Turkish guy actually managed to convince me to let him scrub and wash me! The trip in Turkey has come to an end. I am going to Kusadasi tomorrow morning and will take a ferry to Samos (Greece) from there and then another ferry to Paros on the same day itself. I will spend a night in Paros before I go to Mykonos. Turkey totally took me by surprise. I am so in love with this country. This country has treated me so well and given me so many good memories. |

I arrıved ın Pamukkale yesterday at 4am ın the mornıng. I left Cappadocıa at 7pm. I actually dıdnt expect to be ın Pamukkale that early (actually we got off at Denızlı and waıted for someone to pıck us up from there. I ended up stayıng at the other hotel ınstead the one that I have reserved the day before. I had a shower and went to sleep at 6am. Thıs Korean guy and I were sharıng the same dorm (we were on the same bus comıng from Cappodocıa). I got up at 9.30am and he asked me ıf I wanted to have sex wıth hım. I couldnt even be bothered to answer hım that questıon. He was so annoyıng and I thınk he was a bıt crazy. I went down and bumped ınto thıs guy at the receptıon area. (I thought he was a Turkısh guy!) I decıded to do somethıng else ınstead of goıng to Hıerapolıs. He was about to do the same thıng, so we went out together. Later I learnt that he ıs 23 and ıs takıng 2 years off to travel. He speaks good Englısh. He ıs a French. It was a total waste to go to that place and for the fırst tıme ın my trıp I actually felt so hot. We then went back to the hotel and had breakfast and planned what we were goıng to do for the day. He made a few suggestıons and we decıded to go hıkıng sınce I wanted to see sunset. It was such a hot day to go hıkıng and I actually regretted of goıng. We bumped ınto a bunch of really cute Turkısh kıds on our way and we ended up spendıng some tıme playıng wıth them. Xavıer (thats the french guys name) played football wıth those boys and I was takıng pıctures for them and later wıth the gırls. Those gırls were so good ın posıng and they actually taught me how to pose!!! How hıllarıous. We had such a great tıme wıth them and took a lot of pıctures! Those kıds even brought us to a place to see sunset. When Xavıer and I made our way down to the hotel, we were talkıng about those kıds and had bıg smıles on our face! They really made my day. I have to say that was the best day of my trıp so far and I am totally ın love wıth Turkey. Those kıds hardly seen any tourısts and eventhough we couldnt really communıcate, but we managed to understand each other quıte well. I felt so at ease when I was wıth them. I am goıng to see Hıerapolıs later but I dont really feel lıke goıng. I already had my best day ın Pamukkale and I know a vısıt to Hıerapolıs would not beat ıt. (I stıll have to go I guess and thats the reason why I am ın Pamukkale.) |

I couldn't bring myself to listen to Wan Fang's song for a long time. Wan Fang is our favourite singer and we shared so many good memories about her songs. We even promised each other that we are going to see her concert one day. Our friendship didn't last that long. This is something both of us never expected.
I feel sad that our friendship ended that way and I have finally found the closure when I was in Istanbul. I was on a ferry, cruising Istanbul and for the first time after so many months, I sang one of Wan Fang's songs. I mourned about our friendship but I know I am going to leave it behind me as from that day.
Travelling on my own always give me time and space to think about stuff. I was reading Elizabeth Gilbert's 'Eat, Pray, Love' when I started the journey. I found the courage to write J a postcard when I was in Corfu and I posted it when I was in Istanbul. That's the first time I ever wrote to her and I hope it gives her a closure too, though it's so many years too late.
Turkey reminds me so much of Morocco and I often think of Hassan when I am here. A guy that I met when I came out from the desert in Zagora. I always think of him very fondly. He gave me so many sweet memories in Morocco and was being really generous to me. Maybe I will go back to Morocco one day to see him and also to visit the town where Echo and Jose lived for a while when they were in Sahara Desert many years ago.
I love Turkey though I doubt very much that I will ever come back here again. Turkish people have been extremely friendly and I really like them a lot. I will be heading to Pamukkale in the evening and spend a couple of days there and then go to Ephesus from there and cross over to Greece.

I spent 3 days in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria and from there, I took a bus to Istanbul. I really love Sofia a lot. Things there are much more cheaper if compared to Greece, though people can be a bit cold but I like the city a lot.
Galia and Peter drove Ian and I to Vitosha Mountain on the same day when we got to Sofia after a nice lunch. Vitosha Mountain, the national park was so beautiful. Galia and Peter then dropped us off at the central and we walked around the city. I took a bus to go back to Galia and Peter's home. Of course I got lost as usual. There was this really nice girl walked with me to find the place. That's really sweet of her although she didn't speak much English.
I didn't plan to meet Ian the following day, instead, I went to explore the city on my own. (I had nice breakfast before I went out! Galia got up and prepared it! So sweet!) I bumped into Ian in the afternoon after taking a nap in the park. We didn't know where to go, so we just kept walking and we ended up in a park. A beautiful park where it used to be a zoo before. It's such a gorgeous park and we walk for about 2 hours and then head back to the city.
We went to a restaurant for a meal and we enjoyed it so much. We didn't realise that it was 11pm until we left the restaurant. I couldn't believe that we actually spent 3.5 hours in there!! Ian helped me to find my direction and I rushed to the bus station but I missed the last bus. I took a taxi home instead. It was good to see Ian again in Sofia and we hugged and said goodbye.
That's the end of the trip in Bulgaria. I left Sofia the following morning to Plovdiv. I was meant to spend the day in Plovdiv and take a night train to Istanbul but it didn't work out as planned. There counter wasn't open and so I couldn't get a train ticket. It was such a pain as people don't speak English and I was having hard time to get them to understand me. So I decided to take a bus to Istanbul instead. It took me 5 hours to reach Istanbul and I fell in love with this city immediately.
This city was full of energy, so vibrant and so colourful. Though I am a Malaysian, but I hardly hear the calling for prayer. In Istanbul, you hear it everywhere!!! Maybe 5/6 times a day! I love the bazaars here. Turkish people are really friendly. When I was asking for the direction to my hostel (I am hopeless in map reading!!) and this guy actually walked me there. I mean they can be really sleazy but I can deal with that now.
I was walking around the Grand Bazaar the other day. I saw a teenage boy walking towards me (he must be like 17 or so). He was asking me the usual questions (where are you from and all that). I didn't answer him. When he was right in front of me, he actually TOUCHED my breast and walked away!!! I was shocked and couldn't believe that he just did that!!! To me, he was just a boy!!! Another day when I was walking past the bridge in a good mood. A man was looking at me and I smiled at him, he ASKED: fuck???? It was so funny!!!! I couldn't help but laughing! I was sure that he didn't speak much of English but he knew that word and he was so frank and blunt!
The mosques in Istanbul are so beautiful and impressive. I would feel really proud and good to pray in any of them if I were a muslim.
Istanbul is definitely one of my favourite cities so far but I am considering to list it as my all time favourite. I am still thinking.
I took a night bus to Cappadocia from Istanbul and I really love this place. I stay in Gerome, it's a small town with extremely friendly people. I really love Turkey.
I have been trying really hard to keep to my budget and watching what I spend. It's really difficult to do that in Turkey. Things are even much more cheaper in Cappodocia but I have to stop doing shopping as my backpack is getting heavier now. It's quite cold in Cappadocia and there is no heating in the room. I managed to sleep well last night with just one nightmare. (The canadian guy who works in the guesthouse told me most people have had good dreams when they sleep in the cave but not me! I dreamt that my ex actually cut me with a knife!!!! How funny!!)
I will be heading to Pamukale on Monday night and will be heading to Greece on 15th May. |

I arrived Athens at night after god know how many hours. I was dead tired and all I wanted to do was to have a good sleep. I booked a dorm bed and luckily I was the only one in the dorm. I had a nice shower and hit the bed and slept like a dead person.
I visited most of the sites as what a typical tourist would do but didn't try much of the food there though. I am on a really tight budget and have another month to go before I go home. I spent 3 nights in Athens. I think Athens was a bit dissapointing given what I've heard about it. This city is not so clean, noisy and quite polluted. People don't seem to speak too much of English but I have to say that the policemen are so handsome!!! :P
I headed to Corfu after Athens and spent 2 nights there. Corfu was quite beautiful but I met too many Americans and Canadians there and they gave me such a headache. I was on my own most of the time and even tried to ride a quadbike. I paid 15euro for the whole day and I was glad that I survived. Accomodation was quite cheap with breakfast and dinner (3 course meal) included. I think it was a good deal.
I then embarked on a 8-hour bus journey to Thessaloniki where I would take a train to the capital city of Bulgaria. I met an American at Thessaloniki's bus station and found out that we were both going to the same place. So we headed to the train station together and bought a midnight train ticket to go to Sofia. It was 1/5, Labour day and the people there were on strike and there were so very few buses operating.
It's good that I met Ian and went on the train with him as I felt quite unsafe on that train. All the people looked dodgy and I was so worried that I would be robbed! I haven't crossed a border by train for a long long time. I think the last time I did was about 12 years ago when I went to Bangkok. It was quite fun. The officer got up the train, collected the passport and came back to return the passport to you about 5 minutes later. You don't even have to move your ass.
Vessalina's parents were coming to pick me up from the train station. Since I changed my plan last minute, so I was worried that they might not be able to make it and I didn't have their contact number with me (didn't copy it down from the e-mail that Vesselina sent me.). We arrived the train station half an hour early, so we just wondered around. I was standing right in front of the entrance by 7am, hoping V's parents could spot me as soon as they walked in to the train station. I waited for about 15 minutes and decided I had to ask my friend to help me to trace the e-mail since there wasn't any internet cafe around.
While I was doing that, I saw a man waved at me and I was so nervous, kept asking Ian if he was waving at me. I forgot that like me, Ian don't know them! It was good to have someone picking you up from the train station in a foreign land especially most people don't speak English here in Sofia.
Galia and Peter were really nice to offer to drop Ian off to the hostel that he wanted to go. So Ian came with us. We had breakfast together. Ian checked in to his hostel and came home with us. We had lunch together and chatted for quite a bit. V's parents offered to drive us to Vitosha mountain after lunch. I really loved that place. The national park was so beautiful and we had some really fresh air.
After Vitosha mountain, Peter drove us back to town centre and Ian and I walked around the centre ourselves. We even went to a posh place to have some nice ice-cream. I like Sofia a lot. It's a very compact city and all the interesting places are within walking distance. I think I will be leaving Sofia on Monday evening and cross over to Turkey from Plovdiv.
It's really sweet for Vesselina to offer me her home. I was really touched. We have never met but she has been extremely generous. I think Sofia wouldn't be that interesting without Galia and Peter. I will head to the town centre again tomorrow and walk around myself and most probably saying goodbye to Bulgaria on Monday evening.
I am looking forward to Turkey and I hope the weather is going to be better when I am in Istanbul.

Dear you,
Do you know that I have missed you and been thinking about what you were telling me the other day when I was in Athens? I feel so happy and excited for you. For you are going to venture the unknown path and see if this is where your hapiness lies.
I wanted so much to be lying next to you, in your bed, holding your hand and listening to your story. I know you need the strength but you know that we are always there for you, just like how you are always there for me.
Go for it, we are just right here, watching you.
I sincerely wish that you find your hapiness and leading a blissful life.
Love you.
