Trachoma eliminated in Timor-Leste.

The elimination of Trachoma, a transmissible Bacterial disease which is thew world's leading infectious cause of blindness, in Timor-Leste (East Timor) has been confirmed by the World Health Organization, according to a press release issued on 3 September 2026. This conformation also marks the elimination of Trachoma across the Southeast Asia Region, with all other countries in that region either having previously eliminated the disease or never having suffered from it. The conformation is therefore a significant step on the way to the World Health Organization's goal of eliminating the disease worldwide by 2030.

The announcement is the result of a campaign of screening which began on Atauro Island in 2015, and which has been rolled out to every region of the country. In 2025, a total of 4949 children aged 0-5 in all 13 municipalities of Timor-Leste did not find a single case of Trachoma, leading to the conclusion that the disease had been eliminated. The country does, however, plan to continue to monitor for Trachoma, and retain the ability to treat the disease.

Trachoma is caused by the Bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, and spread through contact with mucus emitted from the eyes and nose during infection, and can be spread by Flies. Infections are most common among children, and the disease can spread rapidly in overcrowded environments, particularly where sanitation is poor and access to clean water is limited. The Bacterium infects the inside of the eyelid, causing a roughening which can in turn lead to damage to the surface of the eye. Eventually the disease can lead to the eyelids turning inwards, blinding the patient. Infections are generally fought off fairly quickly, particularly in adults, but having been infected does not offer protection against future infections, and the damage caused by each infection is cumulative. Chlamydia trachomatis is vulnerable to the antibiotics azithromycin and tetracycline.

Timor-Leste is the 33rd country to eliminate Trachoma as a public health risk, with the other countries being Algeria, Australia, Benin, Burundi, Cambodia, China, Egypt, El Salvador, Fiji, The Gambia, Ghana, India, Iraq, Iran, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Togo, Tunisia, Vanuatu and Vietnam. Trachoma is one of twenty Neglected Tropical Diseases identified by the World Health Organization's Road Map for Neglected Tropical Diseases 2021–2030, with 68 countries now having eliminated at least one of these diseases.

Over 300 flights cancelled following series of eruptions on Anak Krakatoa.

Over 300 flights have now been cancelled since Anak Krakatoa, a volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, began erupting on Friday 4 September 2026. The volcano has produced a series of volcanic columns, some of which have reached over 15 000 m above sealevel. This has led to ash falls across the region, with all flights from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, which is a little over 100 km to the east of the volcano, being cancelled. The Indonesian Ministry of Health is recommending people avoid going outside without dust masks due to the health hazard presented by the ash, which can cause severe breathing problems, and fishing fleets in the area are reportedly avoiding going to sea because of the poor conditions.

Volcanic ash is extremely hazardous to aircraft in a number of ways. At its most obvious it is opaque, both visually and to radar. Then it is abrasive, ash particles physically scour aircraft, damaging components and frosting windows. However the ash is most dangerous when it is sucked into jet engines, here the high temperatures can melt the tiny silica particles, forming volcanic glass which then clogs engine. When this happens the only hope the aircraft has is to dive sharply, in the hope that cold air passing through the engine during the descent will cause the glass to shatter, allowing the engine to be restarted. Obviously this is a procedure that pilots try to avoid having to perform.

Anak Krakatau is a volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java. The volcano (then known simply as Krakatoa) famously exploded in 1883, killing over 36 000 people (possibly over 120 000), largely through a series of tsunamis. This explosion more-or-less completely destroyed the island, but since then a new volcano, Anak Krakatau (meaning the 'son of Krakatoa'), has grown in its place. Anak Krakatau is almost never completely quiet, but goes through periods of greater and lesser activity. An eruption on 22 December 2018 triggered a tsunami which tsunami caused over 430 fatalities, injured 14 000 people, and displaced 33 000 more along the Sunda Strait. The tsunami risk of this area is particularly high as the coast is very popular with both locals and tourists and is home to over 20 million people within a 100 km distance from the volcano.

Anak Krakatau is located to the north of the Sunda Trench, along which the Australian Plate is being subducted beneath the Sunda Plate, on which the island sits. As the Australian Plate is subducted it is partially melted by the friction and the heat of the planet's interior. Some of this melted material then rises through the overlying Sunda Plate, fuelling Krakatau and the volcanoes of Sumatra and Java.

The Alpha Aurigid Meteor Shower.

The Alpha Aurigid Meteor shower occurs each year between 25 August and 6 September, and is expected to peak between 1.00 am and dawn on 1 September (this should be roughly the same wherever you are, as our 24 hour clock is derived from the motion of the Earth). However the shower is notoriously hard to observe, having been recorded only in the years 1911, 1929, 1930, 1935, 1979, 1980, 1986, 1994 and 2007 (some of these observations occurred before the 'official' discovery of the shower by Cuno Hoffmeister and Artur Teichgraeber in 1935, but have subsequently been linked to the shower). To make matters worse, the peak of the shower will fall slightly after the New Moon on 28 August, which would hamper the viewing of any meteors that do appear. The shower has its radiant point (the point from which the meteors appear to radiate) in the constellation of Auriga, close to the star Alpha Auriga (hence the name), which is a circumpolar star, permanently above the horizon in the Northern Hemisphere, but difficult to spot from the Southern Hemisphere.

Meteor showers are thought to be largely composed of material from the tails of comets. Comets are composed largely of ice (mostly water and carbon dioxide), and when they fall into the inner Solar System the outer layers of this boil away, forming a visible tail (which always points away from the Sun, not in the direction the comet is coming from, as our Earth-bound experience would lead us to expect). Particles of rock and dust from within the comet are freed by this melting (strictly sublimation, transforming directly from a solid to a gas due to the low pressure on it's surface) of the comet into the tail and continue to orbit in the same path as the comet, falling behind over time.

The Aurigid Meteors are made by the Earth passing through the trail of Comet C/1911 N1 (Keiss), and encountering dust from the tail of this comet. The dust particles strike the atmosphere at speeds of over 200 000 km per hour, burning up in the upper atmosphere and producing a light show in the process.

Comet C/1911 N1 (Keiss) was discovered on 6 July 1911, by astronomet Carl Clarence Keiss, at the Lick Observatory on the summit of Mount Hamilton, in the Diablo Range just east of San Jose, California. The name C/1911 N1 (Keiss) implies it was the first (1) comet (C/) discovered in the first half of July 1911 (period 1911 N), and that is was discovered by Keiss.

Comet C/1911 N1 (Keiss) completes one orbit every 2497 years on an eccentric orbit tilted at 148° to the plane of the Solar System, that takes it from 0.68 AU from the Sun (68% of the average distance at which the Earth orbits the Sun, and slightly inside the orbit of the planet Venus) to 367 AU from the Sun (367 times as far from the Sun as the Earth, and more than three times the distance at which the planet Neptune orbits the Sun). The comet last visited the Inner Solar System in 1911. As a comet with an orbital period of more than 200 years it is considered to be a Long Period Comet.

More than 900 people have now been confirmed dead and over 3000 are still missing following a glacier collapse on the Nepal-Tibet border.

More than 800 people are now known to have died and more than 3000 are still missing following a glacier collapse on the border between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday 26 August 2026. The incident was first recorded as a Magnitude 4.4 Earthquake by the United States Geological Survey at 2.52 am GMT, which is 8.37 am in Nepal and 10.52 am in Tibet (Tibet has been part of China since the 1950s, and China uses a single time-zone for all its territory, leading to a two-and-a-half hour time gap between Tibet and Nepal, despite their having a similar longitude), a figure which was revised to a Magnitude 5.2 event shortly after. Seven minutes after this a flash flood and debris flow hit the Gyirong Port border crossing between Nepal and Tibet, before passing along the Lhende Khola River Valley in Nepal and into the Trishuli River system.

This event was initially interpreted as an Earthquake-induced glacier collapse, probably caused by a glacier shattering and releasing a melt-lake which had built up behind it. Such events are the most common form of glacier collapse, and are particularly associated with warming global temperatures. Essentially, glaciers begin to melt behind their leading edge, with the amount of ice in front of the growing lake slowly decreasing till the whole edifice collapses. However satellite images taken in the days before the collapse revealed no such lake, and it is now thought that a chunk of glacier with an area of about 200 000 m², and a volume of 1-2 million m³, broke off a glacier at an altitude of between 5200 m and 5400 m above sealevel, then dropped vertically about 1200 m into the valley below. This impact caused the event which the United States Geological Survey interpreted as an Earthquake.

Approximately seven minutes after this initial collapse, the Gyirong Port Border Crossing was hit by a flood and debris flow 80 m high, travelling at approximately 180 km per hour (50 m per second). This remarkable velocity was driven largely by the steep nature of the high mountain valleys, with the Gyirong Port border crossing being approximately 3000 m lower than the initial impact point of the falling glacier. The debris flow continued down the valley for approximately 100 km, sweeping away 41 bridges and 42 km of road, as well as the Gyirong Port border crossing in Tibet and the corresponding Rasuwagadhi Customs Office in Nepal, as well as numerous homes and other buildings, and causing significant damage to six hydroelectric projects in Nepal. Bodies of victims of this flood event have been found as far away as Uttar Pradesh in northern India, more than 250 km from the initial glacier collapse event.

Glacier collapses are a part of the natural cycle of events within the Himalayas. The mountains here are not static, but are actively growing as the northward movement of the Indian Plate pushes up the overlying Eurasian plate. This means that glaciers which sit upon these mountains are slowly raised to ever higher altitudes, while at the same time becoming ever more steeply inclined. Eventually, this situation becomes unstable, and gravity overcomes the ability of the ice to stick to the underlying rocks, causing sections of glacier to collapse down the sides of the mountains.

This situation is made significantly worse by rising global temperatures, with the Himalayan region warming at twice the global average, which lead to higher rates of melting on glaciers in the Himalayas. The problem here is not just that the ice melts, but that when it does the water tends to percolate downward through any cracks or holes in the glacier surface, eventually pooling on the underside of the glacier. This creates a layer of liquid water over which the glacier can flow, which is the natural way in which glaciers move in lowland areas, but can lead to catastrophic consequences on high, steeply inclined glaciers.

This warming does not just threaten glaciers in these regions; many of the highest mountains are effectively rubble piles held together by ice and frozen soil (permafrost). As the Himalayas warm this ice can thaw, leading to parts of mountains breaking away, leading to more and larger landslides and rockfalls in an area where these are already a major threat to both lives and infrastructure.

Rescue efforts following the 26 August event have been greatly impacted by the loss of roads and bridges, as well as the large amounts of mud and silt left behind by the floods. Rescue workers have often had to wade through deep mud to reach communities cut off by the floods, with other communities only accessible by helicopter.

Concerns were raised about a second flood hitting the area on Thursday 27 August, after Chinese authorities discovered a barrier lake which had formed behind debris deposited at the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers in Tibet. At the time, there was an estimated three million cubic metres of water in this lake, which had begun to overtop the barrier, leading to fears of an imminent collapse. However, this lake subsequently drained away naturally without Human interference, and had largely disappeared by Sunday 30 August.

Partial Lunar Eclipse to be visible from West Africa and much of the Americas.

A partial Lunar Eclipse will occur on Friday 28 August 2026, starting at 1.25 am GMT. The whole eclipse will be visible across all of South America and the Atlantic, and most of North America, and most of West Africa and the western Maghreb, and western Iberia while part of the eclipse will be visible from parts of the northwest of North America, the remaining parts of the Maghreb and West Africa, as well as much of Central and Southern Africa, European Russia, the remainder of the Middle East, and Western and Central Europe, and parts of Norway. although in these areas the Moon will either rise part way through the eclipse, or set before it is complete.

The Moon produces no light of its own, but 'shines' with reflected light from the Sun. Thus, at Full Moon the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth to the Sun, and its illuminated side is turned towards us, but at New Moon the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, so that its illuminated side is turned away from us.

Lunar eclipses occur when the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow. This can only happen at Full Moon (unlike Solar Eclipses, which happen only when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sum, and therefore only occur at New Moon), but does not happen every Lunar Month as the Sun, Moon and Earth are not in a perfect, unwavering line, but rather both the Earth and the Moon wobble slightly as they orbit their parent bodies, rising above and sinking bellow the plane of the ecliptic (the plane upon which they would all be in line every month).

Because the Moon is passing through a shadow, rather than being blocked from our view, it does not completely disappear during an eclipse like the Sun, but in a total Lunar Eclipse goes through two distinct phases of dimming, the Penumbra, when it is still partially illuminated by the Sun, and the Umbra, when the Earth completely blocks direct sunlight from the Moon. This does not result in complete darkness, as the Moon is still partially lit by reflected Earthlight, but it does turn a deep, dark red colour. In a partial eclipse the Earth passes completely through the Moon's penumbra, but only partly through its umbra.

Thirty confirmed deaths following landslide at landfill site in Guinea.

Thirty people have been confirmed dead, with another 22 people injured, six of them seriously, following a landslide at a landfill site in the Gbessia Commune ‌of Conakry, the capital of Guinea, on Sunday 23 August 2026. The incident happened at about 2.00 am local time, and caused piled waste from the city to collapse onto nearby dwellings, destroying a number of homes. Landslides are a common problem after severe weather events, as excess pore water pressure can overcome cohesion in soil and sediments, and even artificial deposits such as those found at landfill sites, allowing them to flow like liquids. Approximately 90% of all landslides are caused by heavy rainfall.

Authorities in Conakry were reportedly aware of the dangerous situation at the waste site, and had begun to move people from homes close to the site, ahead of a planned closure from Sunday 30 August, which was to be followed by the moving of much of the accumulated waste to a site outside of the city. This move has now been brought forward, with people being more people being moved out of their homes, and waste being loaded onto trucks as it is searched for survivors or Human remains.

West Africa has a distinct two season climatic cycle, with a cool dry season during the northern winter when prevalent winds blow from the Sahara to the northeast, and a warm rainy season during the northern summer when prevalent winds blow from the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. These warm winds from the Atlantic are laden with moisture, which can be lost rapidly when the air encounters cooler conditions, such as when it is pushed up to higher altitudes by the mountains of the Fouta Djallon in Guinea.

Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis: A Rhinoceros from the Pleistocene of Romania.

Three species of Rhinoceros are known from the Middle-to-Late Pleistocene of Romania, the Woolly Rhinoceros, Coelodonta antiquitatis, a cold-adapted species associated with the various glacial phases, the Narrow-nosed rhinoceros, or Steppe Rhinoceros, Stephanorhinus hemitoechus, a species associated with the warmer, interglacial phases, and Merck's Rhinoceros, Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis, a larger species which may have reached as much as three tonnes, making it larger than the White Rhinoceros, Ceratotherium simum, the largest extant Rhinoceros species. Merck's Rhinoceros also appears to have favoured warmer phases, and possibly to have been restricted to the Eemian Interglacial (between 130 000 and 150 000 years ago), although specimens have been found from Siberia which apparently lived alongside Woolly Rhinoceroses, suggesting the species may have been longer lived more tolerant of climatic variation than it is generally given credit for.

In a paper published in the North-Western Journal of Zoology on 15 June 2026, Vlad Codrea of the Paleotheriology and Quaternary Geology Laboratory at Babeș-Bolyai University, the Department of Natural Sciences at Mureș County Museum, the Department of Natural History at Țării Crișurilor Museum, and the Emil Racoviță Speleological Institute, and Aurelian Popescu of the Department of Natural Sciences at the Museum of Oltenia Craiova, describe a partial Rhinoceros mandible from Dolj County in southwestern Romania.

The mandible was discovered by English engineer William Heerlein Lindley, who was working on a water supply system for the city of Craiova, which had undergone a period of rapid expansion during the late nineteenth century, leaving the system of wells which had traditionally provided water for its residents wholly inadequate. It is unclear exactly where Lindley found the mandible, but it probably came from the Upper Terrace of the Jui River Basin, which reaches its greatest width to the east of Craiova, and where Lindley carried out considerable work, channelling water from natural springs into a system of cast-iron pipes to supply the city. The Upper Terrace has also yielded Woolly Mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius, Woolly Rhinoceros, Coelodonta antiquitatis, and Irish Elk, Megaloceros giganteus, fossils, and is considered to be Late Pleistocene in age.

Lindley gave the mandible to Alexandru and Aristia Aman, who had a collection of art, antiquities, and books, which in turn was passed to the Olteniei Museum in Craiova in the 1950s, with the specimen becoming part of that museum's natural history collection.

The specimen is the rear part of the mandible of a large Perissodactyl, with the anterior portion broken off, a broken area on the anterior edge of the coronoid process. This broken area makes it hard to judge the elevation of the anterior edge of the vertical branch of the mandible. The teeth have also been broken from the jaw, but this is recent damage, probably caused during its excavation.

The damage to the jaw removes many of the diagnostic features used when classifying Perissodactyls, though its large size rules out anything but a large Rhinoceros, while still being too small for the truly enormous Elasmotherium. It also has a nutrient foramina on the ventral side of the symphysis, a feature associated with Merck's Rhinoceros, leading Codrea and Popescu to conclude that it should be assigned to this species.

While the teeth of the specimen are missing, they were clearly all fully erupted, indicating that it was an adult at time of death. It was probably of about average size for a specimen of Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis. The exact age of the specimen is impossible to know, given the circumstances of its discovery. If it does come from the sediments Lindley excavated at Malu Mare when laying his pipeline, then it would be the oldest known Rhinoceros from Romania, as well as having come from deposits which also yielded cold-adapted species such as Woolly Rhinoceros, Woolly Mammoth, and Irish Elk, although it is possible that Lindley discovered it elsewhere, so this cannot be asserted with any confidence.

The Kappa Cygnid Meteor Shower.

The Kappa Cygnid Meteor Shower is visible some years between the months of June and September, peaking between 3 and 25 August, with the best peak rate generally falling before dawn on 18 August, when the shower can produce 2-3 meteors per hour, with these tending to be bright fireballs with multiple fares. The meteor shower gains its name from the star Kappa Cygnus, which it is close to at the peak of its activity, and which is circumpolar in the Northern Hemisphere (i.e., close to the North Pole, and permanently above the horizon), although generally invisible in the Southern Hemisphere. If the shower does appear, viewing should be reasonably good, as activity will peak two days before the first quarter Moon, which will be in the constellation of Virgo, providing minimal light interference. However, the meteor shower is notoriously erratic, not being seen every year; it was last seen in the Augusts of 2020 and 2021, and before that in 2013 and 2014, then before that in 2007.

The source body of the Kappa Cygnid Meteors remains somewhat of an enigma. The low number of asteroids, and their irregular arrival, suggests they are an old shower potentially derived from an object no longer visiting the Inner Solar System, whereas the brightness of the meteors suggests a younger origin. One possible solution to this is that they are derived from a body whose orbit undergoes a sinusoidal oscillation, something which can be caused if a body is forced into an orbital resonance with a larger body, often Jupiter in our Solar System.

One potential parent body for the Kappa Cygnid Meteors which has been suggested is 2008 ED69, an asteroid which has an orbit with a 2:1 resonance with that of Jupiter and an orbital period of 4.96 years, which is thought to have been pushed into and out of Earth-crossing orbits repeatedly over the past 6000 years. However, more recent studies have established that the Kappa Cygnid Meteor Shower has an orbital period of 7.12 years and is locked into a 5:3 orbital resonance with Jupiter, ruling out 2008 ED69 as a potential parent body.

At least 53 dead following Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake off the coast of Flores Island, Indonesia.

The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency recorded a Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake at a depth of about 15 km, to the north of the Island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia slightly before 5.00 am on Saturday 15 August 2026, Eastern Indonesian Time (slightly before 10.00 pm on Friday 14 August, GMT). The Earthquake was felt as far away as Bali, and caused a tsunami as high as 1.6 m on some parts of the coast of Flores. The initial event has been followed by more than three hundred aftershocks.

At least 53 people have died as a result of this event, the majority of them killed in their sleep as buildings collapsed onto them, making this the most deadly Earthquake to hit Indonesia since 2022. A further 135 people are known to have been injured, with more than 5000 people displaced and over 1900 homes damaged or destroyed. The Earthquake also caused damage to at least 93 educational facilities, 36 health facilities, 38 government offices, and five places of worship. A maritime passenger terminal collapsed in Maumere on the north coast of Flores.

Flores is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, which are located on the northern part of the Timor Microplate. This is trapped between the converging Eurasian and Australian Plates, both of which are being subducted beneath it. In the south the Australian Plate is passing under the island of Timor, while in the north the Eurasian Plate is being subducted in the same way. This is not a smooth process; the rocks of the various plates constantly stick together, only to break apart again as the pressure builds up, causing Earthquakes in the process.

Earthquakes along subductive margins are particularly prone to causing tsunamis, since these often occur when the overlying plate has stuck to the underlying plate, being pulled out of shape by its movement. Eventually the pressure builds up too far and the overlying plate snaps back, causing an Earthquake and a tsunami.

Total Solar Eclipse to be visible from Greenland and Spain.

A total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from parts of Greenland and Spain, as well as intervening parts of the Atlantic Ocean, on Wednesday 12 August 2026, with a partial eclipse visible from the rest of western Europe, Canada, eastern parts of the United States, and parts of North and West Africa. The event will occur between 4.35 pm and 8.57 pm GMT, although local start and end times will vary within this window.

Eclipses are a product of the way the Earth, Moon and Sun move about one-another. The Moon orbits the Earth every 28 days, while the Earth orbits the Sun every 365 days, and because the two Sun and Moon appear roughly the same size when seen from Earth, it is quite possible for the Moon to block out the light of the Sun. At first sight this would seem likely to happen every month at the New Moon, when the Moon is on the same side of the Earth as the Sun, and therefore invisible (the Moon produced no light of its own, when we see the Moon, we are seeing reflected sunlight, but this can only happen when we can see parts of the Moon illuminated by the Sun).

However, the Moon does not orbit in quite the same plane as the Earth orbits the Sun, so the Eclipses only occur when the two orbital planes cross one-another; this typically happens two or three times a year, and always at the New Moon. During Total Eclipses the Moon entirely blocks the light of the Sun, however most Eclipses are Partial, the Moon only partially blocks the light of the Sun.

Although the light of the Sun is reduced during an Eclipse, it is still extremely dangerous to look directly at the Sun, and viewing eclipses should not be undertaken without appropriate equipment.

Archaeologists uncover Bronze Age kitchen in western Azerbaijan.

A group of Italian and Azerbaijani archaeologists have uncovered what they believe to be a Bronze Age ceremonial kitchen at a site called Tava Tepe in western Azerbaijan, according to a press release issued by the University of Catania on 3 August 2026. The site, which was discovered in 2024 and which sits on top of an artificial earthen terrace, has since been excavated by archaeologists from the University of Catania, the Baku Academy of Sciences, and La Sapienza University in Rome, providing unique insights into life in the Caucasus during the late Bronze Age.

The site is thought to have been occupied between about 1300 and 1000 BC, and comprises a series of layers that suggest the site was rebuilt several times, whilst retaining its function and layout. At the centre of the site is a large circular brazier, which appears to have served as a location for a main cooking fire. Over time this appears to have been enhanced by the addition of a series of ovens, and spaces for food preparation. Many bowls and dishes, as well as remains of food, were found at the site, some of them stacked within the ovens. The whole are appears to have been covered by a roof of wooden branches, which would have made the location visible from a great distance.

Surrounding this central area are traces of what have been interpreted as a series of wooden huts with beaten limestone floors, which appear to have been dedicated to the preparation of foods. Notable finds within these include a series of terracotta moulds, and items interpreted as pintaderas, stamps used to imprint a pattern upon bread.

Examination of food remains from the site has revealed the nature of at least one meal eaten there, a dish of beef accompanied by a sort of polenta made from Millet, to which honey had been added. Professor Nicola Laneri of the University of Catania, the lead archaeologist at the site, believes that communities living along the Kura River in the late Bronze Age may have periodically met up at the Tave Tepe site for ceremonial meals, meetings which would also have helped to cement social cohesion among these groups.

Sixteen Elephants dead in series of poisoning incidents in Amboseli National Park, Kenya.

Sixteen Elephants have been found dead with apparent cyanide poisoning in the Amboseli National Park in Kenya since 24 June 2026. This has raised concerns about a potential new wave of Human-wildlife conflict in the park, where Elephants were once almost wiped out by poaching, but which is now home to a population of 36 000. All of the Elephants died outside of the Amboseli National Park itself, but within the greater Amoseli ecosystem, in the area around Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Ranch, community-run wildlife projects linking Amboseli National Park to the Tsavo National Park to the east.

Initially, park authorities were concerned that the Elephants may have been poisoned by a cyanide-based insecticide sprayed on crops on one of the farms surrounding the park, as several of the dead Elephants had stomachs filled with tomatoes. Elephant raids on croplands close to Amboseli are a known problem, and while cyanide-based insecticides are illegal in Kenya (which maintains strict rules on the use of agricultural chemicals in order to gain access to lucrative European markets), they are legal in neighbouring Tanzania, with occasional incidents of smuggling and illegal use in Kenya being reported.

However, local farmer's representatives have strongly denied this, claiming that despite the problems of crop raiding, most farmers love the region's Elephants and would not voluntarily harm them. Furthermore, they note that that it would take a considerable amount of cyanide to kill an Elephant, and farms are also impacted by crop raiding by other large Mammals, none of which seem to have been affected.

Another possibility is that the cyanide could have been used in an illegal gold mining operation either within, or close to the Amboseli National Park (while gold is not generally soluble, it can be dissolved in solutions of sodium cyanide, a method which can be used to leach gold from ore rock), although the Kenya Wildlife Service are confident that no such activities are taking place. This makes deliberate poisoning of the Elephants the most probable cause, and while the reason for this is unknown, the most likely explanation would be that it relates to the extensive farmland now surrounding Amboseli and the other parks of the region, which supply vegetables to cities such as Nairobi as well as overseas markets. While many Animals occasionally raid such farms, Elephants are uniquely destructive, with individual Elephants able to consume over a tonne of vegetables within a short period of time.

At least 34 dead following Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake beneath Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded a Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake at a depth of about 10 km, beneath Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyūshū Island, slightly before 4.30 pm Japan Standard Time (slightly before 7.30 am GMT) on Tuesday 28 July 2026. At least 34 people have died following this event, and many more are still missing, most of them within a shopping centre which collapsed during the Earthquake, and where an explosion occurred about an hour later, probably due to a broken gas main. The Earthquake was felt across western Japan, and more than 100 aftershocks have been recorded since the original event.

Around 30 000 households lost power following the event, and around 80 000 have lost water supplies. More than 1000 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters, while civil engineers make safe their residences. Managing this evacuation is proving to be particularly difficult, as many evacuation centres have also lost electricity and water suppliers. The area is currently also suffering from a heatwave, with temperatures reaching as high as 39°C, and around 30% of those evacuated have been described as elderly and vulnerable to the heat.

Japan has a complex tectonic environment with four plates underlying parts of the Islands; in addition to the Pacific in the east and the Othorsk in the North, there are the Philipine Plate to the south and the Eurasian Plate to the West. Kyūshū Island lies at the northeast end of the Ryukyu Island Arc, which sits on top of the boundary between the Eurasian and Philippine Plates. The Philippine Plate is being subducted beneath the Eurasian Plate, in the Ryukyo Trench, to the Southeast of the Islands. This is not a smooth process, with the two plates continuously sticking together then breaking apart as the pressure builds up, leading to frequent Earthquakes in the region.

UNESCO adds three new sites to its World Heritage List.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has added seven new sites to its World Heritage List, which is made up of sites deemed to be of natural or cultural significance which gives them outstanding universal significance for mankind, according to a press release issued on 26 July 2026. All three of these sites have additionally been placed on the World Heritage in Danger list of sites which are facing imminent threats due to Human or natural causes. In addition, three sites already on the World Heritage List have also been placed on the World Heritage in Danger list.

The first new site added to the World Heritage List is the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape in South Sudan; this is the first site in South Sudan to be added to the World Heritage List. This area comprises two National Parks, Boma and Badingilo, which are contiguous with one another, currently managed by African Parks on behalf of the South Sudanese government. The parks lie in the White Nile catchment area, and are home to the world's largest Mammal migration, with over six million Antelope trasversing the area each year, as well as being an important part of the migrant Bird route between Southern Africa and Europe. The area is a biodiversity hotspot of global significance, as well as being home to a number of ethnic groups with their own unique cultural and linguistic heritage, who have acted as custodians of this landscape.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has identified the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape as facing a number of serious threats, including infrastructure development, commercial poaching, and wildlife trafficking and trade, while at the same time lacks meaningful protection from the South Sudanese government, which is under-financed and has a weak infrastructure, with the country suffering from a poor security situation. For these reasons the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape has been placed on the World Heritage in Danger list.

The second new addition to the World Heritage List is the Mount Amel Castles sites in Lebanon. This site compromises a series of five castles across southern Lebanon, built during the Crusader Period on strategic high ground sites, and subsequently used by the Ayyubids, Mamluks, and later powers. These are Qalaat al-Chakif, or Beaufort Castle, dominating the Litani River valley from a strategic ridge, Qalaat Tibnin, or Toron Castle, on a mountain overlooking the road from Tyre to Damascus, Qalaat Chakra, or Dubieh Castle, in the Chakra agricultural region, Qalaat Deir Kifa, or Maron Castle, on an isolated hill overlooking the route from Lebanon towards Galilee and Jerusalem, and Qalaat Chama’, on a hill overlooking the coastal plain near Tyre.

In November 2024 the Mount Amel Castles were given 'enhanced protection status by the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, a status which grants access to the Fund for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, as well helping to make applications for other forms of international assistance. However, since that time the sites have suffered heavy damage due to the ongoing conflict in the region, and are now considered to be in jeopardy of complete destruction, prompting the World Heritage Committee to move the sites to both the World Heritage List and the World Heritage in Danger list as a way to highlight the risk of losing these sites.

The third new site added to the World Heritage List is the Palestinian village of Sebastia in the Nablus Governate of the State of Palestine. This is a site of significant archaeological heritage, having been inhabited since at least the ninth century BC, when it served as the capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel, and has since been occupied by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Hellenistic Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans. The village was the site of a fortified town associated with Herod the Great during the Roman period, and was a Throne Village (administrative centre governed by local leaders) during the Ottoman period. It is considered to be the burial place of St John the Baptist.

The site has been chosen for inclusion on the World Heritage List and the World Heritage in Danger list both because it is threatened by the ongoing conflict in the region, and also because it is threatened with expropriation, with half the site, including many privately owned propertied, earmarked to become part of the proposed Shomron National Park, a development which would allow access to the site only from Israel, excluding many Palestinians who have worked as traditional guides at the site. This project sits alongside plans for the expansion of Jewish settlements in the region, again almost certainly at the detriment of the local Palestinian population.

The first site already on the World Heritage List which is being additionally added to the World Heritage in Danger list is the Tauric Chersonese, an ancient city on the Crimean Peninsula founded by Ionian Greeks in the sixth century BC, and subsequently occupied by Megarian Greeks, the Pontic Empire, the Roman Empire, and the Byzantine Empire, before being abandoned in the fourteenth century. Although Crimea is part of Ukraine, it has been occupied by Russia since 2014, with no apparent plan for its protection, conservation, or management. The site is currently monitored remotely by UNITAR/UNOSAT, which has revealed significant degradation of the site, due to construction and large-scale excavation at the site. The World Heritage Committee believes there is a significant danger of the illicit trafficking of cultural property from the Crimea.

The second site from the World Heritage List added to the World Heritage in Danger list is the Historic Inner City of Paramaribo in Suriname, a former Dutch colonial town from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries planted on the northern coast of tropical South America. At the moment, original and highly characteristic street plan of the historic centre remains intact, with buildings that illustrate the gradual fusion of Dutch architectural influence with traditional local techniques and materials. However, the World Heritage Committee feels that the new National Assembly hall and the Yogh parking garage detract from the property’s historic urban landscape and result in a significant loss of its authenticity and integrity, that constitute a threat to the site's outstanding universal value.

The final site to be added to the World Heritage in Danger list is the city of Tyre in Lebanon. This site has been occupied since the Bronze Age, but rose to prominence as a major Phoenician city-state between ninth and sixth centuries BC, and was subsequently occupied by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Hellenic Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Early Muslims, Crusaders, Mamluks, Ottomans, Egyptians, and French, prior to Lebanon gaining independence in 1943. As such, the city is home to numerous archaeological sites of great significance, with those of the Roman Period being particularly spectacular.

Like the Mount Amel Castles, the city of Tyre is threatened by the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon, and while the World Heritage Committee commends Lebanon for its efforts to protect Tyre, they also feel that the historic sites are now directly threatened by the conflict.

Comet C/2024 J3 (ATLAS) makes its closest approach to the Earth.

Comet C/2024 J3 (ATLAS) will make its closest approach to the Earth on Sunday 26 July 2026, when it will reach a distance of 3.45 AU (i.e 3.45 times the average distance between the Earth and the Sun), or 515 426 942 km from us. At this time it will be in the constellation of Lyra, which is above the horizon permanently in much of the Northern Hemisphere at this time of year, but invisible from most of the Southern Hemisphere. The comet will have an apparent optical magnitude of 13.9, meaning it will be hard to spot without a fairly good telescope to observe it. Furthermore, the closest approach comes three days before the Full Moon on Wednesday 29 July, so there is likely to be considerable light interference.

Comet C/2024 J3 (ATLAS) was discovered on 3 May 2024 by scientists at the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Río Hurtado, Chile. The name C/2024 J3 (ATLAS) implies that it is a Comet (C/), that it was the 3rd comet (3) discovered in the first half of May 2024 (period 2024 J), and that it was discovered by the ATLAS sky survey.

Comet C/2024 J3 (ATLAS) is a Parabolic Comet, which is to say a comet that was disrupted from an orbit in the Oort Cloud, and is passing through the Inner Solar System on a parabolic orbit that will probably not bring it back again. This parabolic trajectory is tilted at an angle of 75.6° to the plain of the Solar System, and will bring it at its closest to 3.87 AU from the Sun, on 25 November this year. C/2024 J3 (ATLAS) is not expected to pass close to any planets.

At least eight dead following landslide in Chongqing, China.

Eight people are known to have died and thirty four people are missing following a landslide in Pengshui County in the Chongqing Municipality of China on Friday 17 July 2026. The incident took place at about 9.10 am local time, and caused about 18 000 m³ of rock and soil (including boulders up to 3000 m³) to shift, burying ten residential buildings. Around 1100 people have been evacuated from the area around the incident, with water, electricity, and gas supplies cut off from buildings within 1 km of the landslide as a precaution. Around 800 rescue workers have been deployed to the site, with ten people dug out of the rubble so far, two of whom are described as being in a serious condition in hospital.

The incident happened during heavy rains associated with the summer monsoon, with 192 mm of rain falling overnight before the landslide. Landslides are a common problem after severe weather events, as excess pore water pressure can overcome cohesion in soil and sediments, allowing them to flow like liquids. Approximately 90% of all landslides are caused by heavy rainfall.

However, local authorities have also noted that the area where the landslide occurred is noted for its 'unpredictable' geology, with the Wujiang River cutting through uplifted an karst (eroded limestone) terrain with steep-sided valleys and many cliffs prone to major rockfalls.

Chongqing has a subtropical climate with a rainy season running from mid April to mid October, though rain falls year round. Rainfall is typically highest in June when the area often receives over 200 mm of rainfall. July is drier, but typically still has over 180 mm of rain. Prior to Human settlement, the area was largely covered by forests, with a cool temperate deciduous forest during the last Pleistocene glaciation being replaced by a broad-leafed evergreen forest in the Holocene. However, Chongquing is now one of the most densely populated areas of China, which has led to the loss of much of this forest, the roots of which would have helped to bind soils on steep-sided slopes, leaving areas such as the Wujiang River valleys exposed to heightened landslide risks, and often heavily populated.

Uragasaurus kalasinensis: A new species of Mamenchisaurid Sauropod from the Late Jurassic of northeastern Thailand.

The Mamenchisaurids were a group of non-Neosauropod Sauropods (i.e. outside the largest grouping of Sauropods) which formed a significant part of the fauna of East Asia during the Middle and Late Jurassic. They can be distinguished by highly pneumatised and elongated cervical vertebrae, as well as procoelous vertebrae on the front part of the caudal spine (procoelous vertebrae have a convex forward disk and a concave rear disk), which were distinctive during the Jurassic, but evolved convergently in several Neosauropod groups during the Cretaceous.

Most known Mamenchisaurids come from China, and for a long time they were thought to be restricted to that country. However, in 2005 fragmentary remains attributed to the group were recovered from the Middle to Late Jurassic Khlong Min Formation of Krabi Province in southern Thailand. In 2013, further fragmentary remains were found in the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous Phu Kradung Formation of northeastern Thailand, and in 2019 a new species of Mamenchisaurid, Wamweracaudia keranjei, was described on the basis of a partial skeleton from the Late Jurassic Tendaguru Formation of southeastern Tanzania, establishing the presence of the group in Africa.

In a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports on 8 July 2026, Apirut Nilpanapan of the Department of Biology at Mahasarakham University, Sita Manitkoon of the Palaeontological Research and Education Centre and Vertebrate Palaeontology and Evolution Research Unit at Mahasarakham University, Varavudh Suteethorn of the Khon Kaen Geopark Association, and Komsorn Lauprasert also of the Department of Biology and Evolution Research Unit at Mahasarakham University, describe a new species of Mamenchisaurid Sauropod from the Phu Kradung Formation of northeastern Thailand.

The new species is named on the basis of material collected from the Phu Noi Locality, which is in the village of Ban Din Chi in the Kham Muang District of Kalasin Province, in the northeast of Thailand. Here an outcrop of the Phu Kradung Formation has produced one of the most diverse non-marine Vertebrate fossil assemblages in Southeast Asia. The Phu Kradung Formation comprises a series of sandstones, siltstones, and mudstones laid down in a fluvial environment, within a continental basin.

The precise age of the Phu Kradung Formation is unknown, as it lacks any radiometrically datable horizons. However, regional stratigraphic correlations, Vertebrate assemblages, and detrital zircon data suggest that it is of Late Cretaceous origin, possibly with the uppermost part of the formation extending into the earliest Cretaceous.

The Phu Noi outcrop comprises numerous channel horizons formed within a braided river, rather than horizontal layers extending across the whole site. It has three fossil-bearing horizons. The lowest of these is a grey conglomeratic sandstone laid down in a channel bottom. About 10 m above this, the middle horizon is a brownish-purple and greenish-grey sandy siltstone and mudstone. At the same level as this, but about 400 m to the southwest, the upper horizon is a greyish siltstones within proximal floodplain deposit.

The specimen from which Nilpanpan et al. describe the new species comes from the middle horizon, which is particularly rich in Vertebrate remains, having previously yielded Hybodont Sharks, Ginglymodian Fish, Lungfish, Eucryptodiran Turtles, Teleosaurid Crocodyliformes, and Neornithischian Dinosaurs, and with Brachyopid Temnospondyl, Rhamphorynchoidea Pterosaur, Tyrannosauroid and Metriacanthosaurid Theropod specimens currently being studied. This faunal assemblage shows a strong affinity to the Late Jurassic and earliest Cretaceous faunas of the Junggar, Turpan, and Sichuan basins of China.

The new species is named Uragasaurus kalasinensis, where 'Uragasaurus' derives from 'Uraga' (उरग) the Sanskrit word for Snake, in reference to the long, serpentine, neck of Sauropod Dinosaurs, plus '-saurus' (σαύρος), the Greek for Lizard, a common suffix in Dinosaur names, and 'kalasinensis' means 'from Kalasin' in reference to the province where the specimen was discovered.

Uragasaurus kalasinensis is described from a single isolated anterior dorsal vertebra (PRC 460), from the Phu Noi locality, which is housed in the collection of the Palaeontological Research and Education Centre at Mahasarakham University. A number of other Sauropod elements were found close to this specimen in the same level, which Nilpanpan et al. refer to Uragasaurus kalasinensis. However, because these elements cannot be assigned to the same original Animal with 100% confidence, and they do not have overlapping diagnostic features, they are not included in the formal description of the species. This material includes two anterior dorsal neural arches (KS 34-581 & KS 34-586), a left coracoid (KS 34-587), a left fibula (KS 34-588), a middle cervical vertebra (KS 34-602a), a right cervical rib (KS 34-602b), a middle-to-posterior dorsal vertebra (KS 34-692), and a posterior dorsal vertebra (PN 13-23).

The anterior dorsal vertebra assigned to Uragasaurus kalasinensis has a prominent, elongated teardrop-shaped pneumatic fossae on the distal portion of the transverse processes, intraprezygapophyseal laminae meeting ventromedially to form a Y-shaped configuration in anterior view, incorporating a single vertical intraprezygapophyseal lamina, and a shallow, subtriangular pleurocoel lacking an internal septum.

A computed tomography of specimen PRC 460 showed that its centrum has a camellate internal pneumatic structure composed of numerous small, irregular chambers separated by thin bony septa, although it was not possible to accurately measure the dimensions of these cavities due to mineral infilling. This is a structure unique to advanced Mamenchisaurids, which differs from the procamerate internal structure seen in certain Neosauropods and the camerate condition found in Macronarians and Diplodocoids.

Phylogenetic analysis of the taxonomic affinities of Uragasaurus kalasinensis consistently recovered the species as a basal Mamenchisaurid, although its precise placement within this group was hard to determine, which is unsurprising given the limited nature of the material. However, the same analysis consistently found Rhomaleopakhus turpanensis, a species formerly classified as being a member of the Mamenchisauridae, as being outside the group, which Nilpanpan et al. suggest may indicate the need to re-evaluate the taxonomic status of a number of Late Jurassic Asian Sauropods.

A previous Mamenchisaurid specimen, KS26-4, was described from the Phu Dan Ma locality in 2013. This specimen comprises a nearly complete posterior cervical vertebra and two fragmentary ribs. Since this material did not contain any elements considered reliably diagnostic within the Mamenchisauridae, it was not formally described as a new species. This lack of diagnostic features, combined with a lack of shared elements with the material assigned to Uragasaurus kalasinensis leads Nilpanpan et al. to refrain from assessing whether it belongs to the same species.

Three dead and five missing following landslide at construction site in Kerala.

Three people have died and another five are missing following a landslide at a construction site in Wayanad District, Kerala, at about 1.00 pm local time on Tuesday 7 July 2026. The three dead men have been identified as labourers Anmol Gorai from Jharkhand, Vikas Kumar Singh from Bihar and Chandrabhan Pal from Madhya Pradesh. The incident happened amid heavy rainfall associated with the summer monsoon, which appears to have triggered the collapse of a large pile of earth produced by the construction of a road tunnel intended to connect the town of Meppadi in Wayanad District to the village of Anakkampoyil in the neighbouring Kozhikode District. Landslides are a common problem after severe weather, as excess pore water pressure can overcome cohesion in soil and sediments, allowing them to flow like liquids. Approximately 90% of all landslides are caused by heavy rainfall.

The landslide swept across the construction site, over a nearby road where it swept several vehicles away, then over a temporary labour camp for workers at the site, then a local church and house. All work at the site, other than searching for the missing persons, has stopped pending an investigation into the incident.

Managers at the site, which is being operated by Dilip Buildcon Limited, have claimed that the landslide started on land above the construction site, and was therefore not their fault. However, local authorities have observed that the company appears to have been in breach of at least two directives issued to by the Kerala Public Works Department, one of which was to remove the spoil heap, which was perceived as dangerously large, while the other was not to allow work on the site to be carried out on the site during heavy rainfall, due to the possibility of landslides.

The tunnel project was approved in 2020, and is intended to relieve pressure on the Thamarassery Ghat Road, which is prone to closures due to landslides during the monsoon season. However, from the outset it has been opposed by environmental groups in Kerala, who were worried that it would affect areas which form a key part of the Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot, in particular forests used by wild Elephants, and that there was a danger of tunnelling activities making the hillsides more prone to landslides.

These concerns form part of a wider dispute between the Indian Government, which considers large infrastructure projects to be a vital part of its mission to raise millions of Indian citizens out of poverty, and environmentalists, who consider many of these projects to be poorly thought out, and not to take into account the special environmental needs of places such the Western Ghats, nor the current or projected future climate of the region. While such objections are often depicted by India's politicians as being anti-development sentiments which will condemn future generations to poverty, environmentalists worry that large projects which do not take into account the environment and climate risk failure, leaving the areas affected without any meaningful improvement to infrastructure and potentially significant environmental degradation, leaving local communities worse off than they are now.

Monsoons are tropical sea breezes triggered by heating of the land during the warmer part of the year (summer). Both the land and sea are warmed by the Sun, but the land has a lower ability to absorb heat, radiating it back so that the air above landmasses becomes significantly warmer than that over the sea, causing the air above the land to rise and drawing in water from over the sea; since this has also been warmed it carries a high evaporated water content, and brings with it heavy rainfall. In the tropical dry season the situation is reversed, as the air over the land cools more rapidly with the seasons, leading to warmer air over the sea, and thus breezes moving from the shore to the sea (where air is rising more rapidly) and a drying of the climate.

Kerala has a complex seasonal cycle, driven by the presence of the Western Ghats mountain range, which largely block the dry northerly winds which dominate the climate of much of India, and its proximity to the equator, which leads to a double monsoon system. Such a double Monsoon Season is common close to the equator, where the Sun is highest overhead around the equinoxes and lowest on the horizons around the solstices, making the solstices the coolest part of the year and the equinoxes the hottest. In Kerala this results in a Southwest Monsoon, which lasts from May to September, and is driven by winds from the southern Arabian Sea dumping water onto the Western Ghats, followed by a Northwest Monsoon, which lasts from October to December, where winds from the Bay of Bengal do the same. Of the two monsoons, the southwest is the wetter, due to the proximity of the sea, with June typically being the wettest month, with an average of 341 mm of rain falling in the month.

Six 'space balls' found on Queensland beach.

Local authorities in Forest Beach, Queensland, have set up a 50 m exclusion zone around a group of six spherical objects that washed up on beaches on Friday 3, Saturday 4, and Sunday 5 July 2026. The objects have been identified by the Australian Space Agency as most probably being propellant tanks from a recent space launch. These tanks would have contained pressurised fuel before it was released, during the launch process, and have warned people not to approach them due to the possibility of residual amounts of flammable or reactive chemicals being present.

Spacecraft tend to contain a lot of thick-walled spherical tanks, which is the most stable shape for a tank containing liquids under pressure in a changing gravity field. Unfortunately this is also a good shape for surviving re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, so as the amount of space junk orbiting the Earth increases, so does the number of metal spheres falling from the sky. As yet there have been no reported cases of death or serious injury caused by space junk, but it does seem to be an increasing hazard on Earth as well as in orbit, with several reports of damage to property now coming in each year.

The basic design of a hydrazine bladder tank, thought to be the type object found on a Queensland beach this week. The tank comprises a tough, protective, outer shell, typically made of titanium, with a flexible bladder inside, which shrinks as the gas inside is expelled, maintaining a constant pressure. Because the debris are thought to have come from a non-Australian rocket, they are covered by the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which enables countries to reclaim any portion of a space vehicle which fell onto another country's territory, in order to investigate any problems with a launch or re-entry procedure. The Australian Space Agency have therefore contacted the country they believe to have carried out the launch from which the tanks came in order to give them the chance to reclaim their parts. They do not, however, expect them to act upon this, as the launch was successful and such tanks are often recovered intact. In the modern world it is unusual for countries to exercise their rights under the Outer Space Treaty, which comes from a time when space travel was a newer and more experimental technology.

Although not generally considered one of the world's leading environmental problems, the increasing amount of space traffic and man-made objects in orbit, means that the space industry is beginning to have a serious environmental impact. There were 324 space launches in 2025, and have been 154 so far in 2026, with the largest rockets (which are becoming more common, as they can carry multiple satellites at a time) releasing around 76 000 tons of carbon dioxide in a launch. Other environmental impacts are large pieces of debris from launches, such as those found in Queensland this week, but also particulate matter from the breakup of larger pieces of launch stage rockets and satellites re-entering the atmosphere, as well as combustion products of metal and plastics burned during these processes.

Five-year-old girl swallowed by sinkhole in Cape Town, South Africa.

A five-year-old girl has been rescued after being swallowed by a sinkhole at Wetland in the Khayelitsha Township of Cape Town, South Africa, on Friday 3 July 2006. The girl, who has not been named, was reportedly visiting her aunt in the area, when a section of road collapsed beneath her, leading her to fall into the hole and be covered over with sand. Local residents acted quickly, and were able to dig her out with handtools before serious harm occurred.

Sinkholes are generally caused by water eroding soft limestone or unconsolidated deposits from beneath, causing a hole that works its way upwards and eventually opening spectacularly at the surface. Where there are unconsolidated deposits at the surface they can infill from the sides, apparently swallowing objects at the surface, including people, without trace.

However, on this occasion the problem is thought to have been caused by a bulk sewer pipeline which lies beneath the area. The informal settlement at Wetland has been built over this pipeline, which is in a poor state of maintenance, in need of upgrading, and has suffered a number of sinkhole-related problems as sections of the pipeline have collapsed. Officials from the City of Cape Town, which is responsible for the pipeline, report that they expect more collapses on the pipeline, which they struggle to access because of the presence of the settlement.

The Earth approaches aphelion.

The Earth will reach its aphelion, the furthest point in its orbit from the Sun, a distance of 1.017 AU (1.017 times the average distance between the Earth and the Sun) or 152 141 035 km, at 5.30 pm GMT on Monday 6 July 2026. The Earth's orbit is slightly eccentric and slightly variable, leading to the distance between the Earth and the Sun varying by about 3.4% over time, reaching aphelion early in July each year and perihelion (the closest point on its orbit to the Sun) early in January. The exact distance at aphelion and perihelion each year varies, with this year's aphelion being slightly further from the Sun than last year (2025), when the Earth reached 152 087 733 km from the Sun on Thursday 3 July, or next year, when it will only reach a distance of 152 100 479 km on Tuesday 6 July.

This is counter intuitive to inhabitants of the Earth's Northern Hemisphere, who often assume that the Earth is closest to the Sun in midsummer, when in fact it is at its furthest away. This is because the tilt of the Earth plays a far greater role in our seasons than the distance from the Sun, and the Northern Hemisphere has just passed its Summer Solstice, i.e. the point at which the North Pole was pointing as close to the Sun as it ever gets, so that the Northern Hemisphere is currently getting much more sunlight than the Southern. The Earth's surface receives about 7% less sunlight at aphelion to at perihelion, but this is far less than the seasonal variation caused by the tilt of the Earth (23% in each hemisphere).

Manis pentadactyla: The Chinese Pangolin confirmed to be living in Pakyong District, Sikkim.

Pangolins are solitary, nocturnal, and generally cryptic Mammals, found across Africa and Asia. They feed on Ants and Termites, and have a covering of scales, made from fused hairs, which are their main defence against predators, rolling into a ball with these forming the outer covering. There are eight recognised species of Pangolin, four in Africa and four in Asia, two of which are listed as Vulnerable under the terms of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, three as Endangered, and three as Critically Endangered. One of these Critically Endangered species is the Chinese Pangolin, Manis pentadactyla, which is found across parts of Nepal, Bhutan, northern India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, and Taiwan. In India it is known to be present in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Assam, with occasional reports of its presence in Sikkim and West Bengal, although none of these have been confirmed.

In a paper published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa on 26 June 2026, Prashanti Pradhan of the Sikkim Alpine University, and the Assam Downtown University, Jampal Dorjee Bhutia, also of the Sikkim Alpine University, and Prem Kumar Chhetri and Bharat Kumar Pradhan of the Forest & Environment Department of the Government of Sikkim, document the first confirmed sighting of the Chinese Pangolin in Pakyong District, Sikkim, and provide photographic evidence to support this.

Pradhan et al.'s report is based upon a Pangolin which was found in Barapathing Village in Pakyong District on 31 March 2024. Barapathing Village is located at an altitude of between 1150 and 1700 m in an area where subtropical to temperate broad-leaved forests are being encroached upon by agricultural land and Human settlements, with anthropogenic pressures increasing due to the construction of the 717B National Highway, and associated infrastructure.

The Pangolin was found by a local villager wandering within their backyard, and apparently lost and looking for food. The villager, who was unfamiliar with the species, attempted to drive the Pangolin away, though it was unperturbed by this, and apparently tolerant of Humans, potentially indicating that it had been living in a Human-dominated environment for some time. The Pangolin was eventually allowed to settle in a room, while the resident called the Barapathing Territorial Range Forest & Environment Department, who collected the Animal and relocated it to a subtropical forest downstream of the village.

The rescued Animal was identified as a Chinese Pangolin, Manis pentodactyla, on the basis of its distinct morphological characteristics, such as overlapping keratinous scales, an elongated snout, and robust body form. The photographic evidence collected by Pradhan et al. constitutes evidence that this species is present in the Pakyong District of Sikkim. Local people were able to identify the Animal as a Pangolin using the Nepali word 'Saalak', but reported that they had never seen one so close to a Human habitation before.

The photographs and a description of the Animal were later sent to Vikram Aditya, the principal scientist at the Centre for Wildlife Studies in Bengaluru, Karnataka State, and a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Pangolin Specialist Group, who confirmed the diagnosis of this being a Chinese Pangolin.

Pangolins are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, driven by deforestation, forest fires, and road development, across their range. Sikkim has had one of the greatest expansions of its road network of any state in India during the last decade, with a major road upgrading project close to the village of Barapathing, which is likely to have contributed to both habitat destruction and a greater rate of Human encounters for Pangolins in the area.

Animals can sometimes survive in altered landscapes by adapting their behaviour, however, this can lead them vulnerable to additional hazards, such as increased hunting. The hunting and trafficking of Pangolins is known to be a hazard for Pangolins in Sikkim, in 2021 a group of five people was arrested trying to smuggle a dead Pangolin from Sikkim into Bhutan, and when questioned they confessed the Animal had been killed in a wildlife sactuary in Sikkim. They also hinted at there being an international wildlife trafficking network operating across the eastern Himalayan region.

Pradhan et al. suggest that there is an urgent need for a baseline ecological study on Chinese Pangolins in Sikkim, in order to better understand the threats linked to development-related habitat fragmentation, illegal hunting and transboundary trafficking, and to enable the development of a conservation plan for the species in the state,

Hyksos settlement discovered in the Eastern Nile Delta.

Egyptian archaeologists working at a site called Tell El-Koua in the Ismailia Governorate have uncovered an ancient settlement dating to the Second Intermediate Period (between 1782 and 1550 BC), according to a press release issued by the Egyptian ‎Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (وزارة السياحة والآثار) on 29 June 2026. At this time the northern part of Egypt, as far south as Cusae, was ruled by a Semitic People called the Hyksos, recorded as the Fifteenth Dynasty, while the southern part of the country was ruled by two successive Egyptian dynasties, the Sixteenth and Seventeenth. This was the first time that a substantial part of Egypt was ruled by a foreign group, and Egyptian chroniclers had a low opinion of them, yet they introduced a number of innovations to Egyptian culture, including Horses, chariots, a sickle-shaped sword called the khopesh, and the compound bow, all of which contributed to the military success of the Eighteenth Dynasty, who reunited Egypt and formed the New Kingdom, which built an expanded Empire including much of the Middle East and Sudan.

The site uncovered includes a residential area, a group of tombs, and several kilns and grain silos. The site is clearly divided into residential areas, working areas, and burial grounds. The residential area covers an area of about 30 m by 60 m and is surrounded by a mud brick wall about 1.5 m thick, and is internally divided into rooms and corridors of various sizes, with ovens and grain silos located on its eastern side.

The site included ten mud brick tombs, some of which were in the typical 'mustaba' style, while others had a variety of architectural facades and decorative elements. These tombs varied in size and orientation, and some of the individuals within them were buried in a crouched position, rather than laid out flat in typical Egyptian style. Several individuals had also been buried outside of tombs. All of the Human remains found are estimated to have come from individuals aged between 25 and 40. The mixture of burial styles suggests a people who had adopted some Egyptian customs, but to varying degrees and with an admixture of their own traditions.

A number of artefacts were found at the site, including scarabs, bronze tools, pottery vessels, alabaster kohl containers, and a number of Tell el-Yahudiyeh ware flasks, which are considered typical of the Hyksos Period in Lower Egypt, but have also been found at sites across the Middle East, particularly those associated with the Canaanite People and on the island of Cyprus. A large number of Animal bones were also discovered, which appear to relate to both meat consumption and funerary rights.

At least thirteen deaths amid flooding in Accra, Ghana.

At least thirteen people have died and a further seven are missing following flooding in the Ghanaian capitol, Accra, following a heavy rainstorm overnight between Sunday 28 and Monday 29 June 2026, with over 38 800 people from more than 7750 households displaced by floodwaters. The worst affected areas of the city is Ga East, where five people are known to have died, and another 2000 people have been displaced from their homes, and Ayawaso Central three people have died and one is missing, while about 3020 people have been displaced. Another three people have died in Tema West, where about 3450 have been displaced. In Ledzokuku one person has died and around 1200 have been displaced by the flooding.

In Ga Central over 1800 people have been displaced, but there are no reports of any fatalities of missing persons, while in Ga West about 2300 people have been displaced, again with no reports of fatalities or missing persons. About 1850 people have been displaced from their homes in Adentan, while about 6500 have been displaced from Korle Klottey. About 2620 people have been displaced by flooding in Okaikwei North, while in Okaikwei South the figure is about 3450 people. In Tema Metropolis about 3600 people were displaced, but no casualties have been reported. About 2200 people have been displaced by flooding in La Dadekotopon, and about 1100 in Krowor.

Outside of Accra, twenty houses are reported to have collapsed due to flooding in the Cape Coast Metropolis, with five people killed inside one of these buildings when it collapsed, and a sixth person drowning in a separate incident. Two people were killed in another building collapse in Mfantsiman, with another person drowning separately, and in Gomoa Central one person was killed in a building collapse and another drowned. Altogether, 58 houses are reported to have been destroyed in Central Region, with flooding also reported in the Volta and Western North regions.

June falls in the middle of the rainy season in Accra, with the city receiving an average of 175 mm of rain during the month. West Africa has a distinct two season climatic cycle, with a cool dry season during the northern winter when prevalent winds blow from the Sahara to the northeast, and a warm rainy season during the northern summer when prevalent winds blow from the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. These warm winds from the Atlantic are laden with moisture, which can be lost rapidly when the air encounters cooler conditions.

However, this year's rains have been far heavier than usual, with 169.2 mm of rain falling in 24 hours on Sunday 28 March, the fourth highest level of rainfall in a single day ever recorded in Ghana, and 593.2 mm of rain falling in June, the wettest month ever recorded in the city. The previous record-holding year was 2002, when 420.6 mm of rain fell in Accra during June, a figure which this year has exceeded by more than the average rainfall for the month. These rising rain levels are linked to greater sea surface temperatures over the Atlantic Ocean as the global climate warms, which leads to greater levels of evaporation from the sea, followed by increased precipitation on land.

Nevertheless, the high rainfall levels are not thought to be the main cause of the flooding which Accra has been suffering this week. Instead, local authorities are blaming the city's lax building controls, which have led to buildings and settlements spreading over and covering up drainage systems, as well as covering areas that were formally open soil with concrete, preventing water from soaking away. This has led to orders fir several illegally built properties to be demolished in the wake of the floods, though local community groups are asking for more consultation before any such plans are implemented, as in the past authorities have demolished properties without any plan to resettle their occupants, resulting in the rebuilding of properties once the authorities have left.

The Kissing Elephants Archway, a famous sea arch on the island of Comino, Malta, collapsed into the Mediterranean Sea at about 7.30 local time on Saturday 27 June 2006. The archway collapsed after a tourist, described as a 32-year-old American man, jumped from it into the sea, although this is unlikely to have been the cause of the collapse. Tragically, a couple were passing under the archway on a jet ski at the time of the collapse, with one of them, described as a 26-year-old Chinese man being killed and the other, a 27-year-old Chinese woman, being severely injured.

Sea arches are dramatic features, and long-lived by Human standards, but are formed by coastal erosion and have a finite lifetime. Sea arches are formed when an exposed headland has a softer rock at its base than above (in this case a soft clay limestone beneath a harder coralline limestone), which causes the arch to be hollowed out as the underlying stone is washed away. Obviously this is an unstable situation, and eventually the arch becomes so undermined that it collapses into the sea.

Archway collapses are usually associated with storm events, which can batter already weakened structures and cause them to collapse. However, the Kissing Elephants Archway collapsed during a period of calm, but extremely hot, weather, during an unprecedented heatwave which has affected much of western Europe, and which has been associated with more than 1300 deaths so far. Though less obvious than storms or even frosts (which can crack rocks when water in crevices freezes and expands), extreme heat can also fracture rocks as the different minerals from which rock is made up expand and contract at different rates as they are heated and cooled. This is something which Humans have exploited since the palaeolithic, with rocks often being placed into fires to make them easier to crack.
