Frequently Asked Questions
1. How is the screen on a Kindle different from a tablet?
Our Kindle devices are designed so you can read comfortably for hours. Kindle has a unique black and white glare-free display that reads like paper even in bright sunlight and enables weeks of battery life. With the display’s distinctive nature, slight shadows of previous text or images can sometimes remain visible on the screen. The display quickly refreshes occasionally to remove these shadows and ensure a high-quality optical experience.
2. Do I need to be a Kindle Unlimited member to read on a Kindle?
No. You do not need a Kindle Unlimited membership to read on a Kindle. All Kindle devices come with instant access to the world’s best eBook store. Kindle Stores worldwide offer millions of titles, including the latest best sellers.
3. How do I setup this Kindle?
You have the option to set up Kindle on the device following its on-screen instructions or with your Kindle app on your phone. When setting up using the phone, just open the Kindle app and enable Simple Setup in settings before you power on your Kindle. If you opted in to link Kindle to your Amazon account for simplified setup at purchase, it will already be registered to you.

Upgraded from 2015 Paperwhite to 2024 Base Kindle. Was it worth it?
Reviewed in Canada on May 18, 2026I've had the 2015 7th gen Kindle Paperwhite for 11 years now and it's still just as good as the day I purchased it! I was already incredibly impressed with this paperwhite model and questioned how much they could truly improve upon such a great design. Was it worth buying the 2024 base Kindle model? Well for me: absolutely!
Originally I was drawn in superficially by the wonderful matcha green color of the base Kindle but I then started diving deep into the specs vs the 2024 paperwhite model. A lot of people comment that the 2024 paperwhite is inferior now to the 2024 base kindle in a number of ways. A lot of YouTube videos said the same. This is obviously part personal preference but some of the major gripes with the paperwhite were the non-recessed/flat with the frame screen which ended in many accidental touches of the screen/page flipping and the larger screen actually being a burden in terms of portability, hand feel and weight.
Anyways, what are the differences between the 2015 paperwhite and the 2024 base kindle that I've noticed so far? I immediately noticed how lightweight it was. This shocked me actually quite a bit. I wasn't expecting a device with the same size screen to feel half the weight of my old device! This will be a pleasure to hold up day to day!
You can see from the side-by-side photo on this review that they really tightened up the frame on the new model. It's not nearly as high at the top and they've shrunken the side frame in as well. I was a bit worried at first that the lack of thumb space on the side would result in accidental touches to the screen but the recessed screen prevents this entirely! Obviously a very well though-out design at this point.
The device speed is noticeably faster which wasn't as much of a surprise to me but still a pleasure to experience. Page turns are nearly instant. The menu comes up faster. No real delay on the keyboard when searching. The dictionary for any word that you hold-to-touch comes up very quickly.
The battery life was a selling point for me. I heard that battery life has been greatly improved since 2015. I can't comment on that aspect yet as this device is still new to me but I expect I will appreciate not having to charge it very often now.
In short: This device is much lighter, more portable, feels better, is faster, has better battery life and includes other features I did not touch on here such as Dark Mode. It was SO easy to activate the new device. As soon as I logged in with my Amazon account: all of my e-books were instantly available on my device. I selected the book I was currently reading on the old device and it took me right back in at the exact page I was on previously. Zero hassle!
For the price: You cannot go wrong here. I can't imagine anybody being disappointed with this device unless you read a lot of comic books/manga/magazines etc. in which case you'll likely want the Color version of this device despite it's much higher price tag.

The best e-reader of all
Reviewed in Canada on May 30, 2026I've owned the regular Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and the Kindle Paperwhite colour, and this is my favourite by far. The size of this kindle is just my preferred size for an e-reader. It does fit in my back jeans pocket, and is just easy in small hands. It is however, noticeably slower (there is lag), compared to the Kindle Paperwhite versions, so that's something to keep in mind, but once the books are downloaded, and opened (i.e. you're already reading them), you don't notice that its slower at all.
Things I love about an e-reader (though not all these pros are specific to this kindle):
- you never need a bookmark
- on normal books, I usually try to read to the end of a chapter, or somewhere that I'm able to pick up where I left off. With an e-reader, I just keep reading, even if that means I read to the middle of a page. I think I do this because as I mentioned above, you don't need a bookmark, so this results in me reading more, and finishing books quicker.
- can look up words instantaneously if you don't know a word
- highlighting is easy, and the kindle has a "my clippings" section where you can access all of your highlighted texts (see photos in the review)
- books on demand basically. If you want a book, purchase or rent it from Kindle Unlimited and its on your device immediately
- I've read a lot more on my kindle than I would have if I had the physical books on hand
- you have a literal library at your fingertips. Amazing for travelling, and amazing if you take public transport.
- works between devices, if you stop on page 112 on one kindle, you can pick up where you left off on another kindle device, or even on your iPhone on the kindle app.
- page numbers are accurate, so if the kindle says you're on page 112, and you also have the physical book, you're actually on page 112.
- can read at night or in the dark, without disturbing your partner/spouse/husband in the bed next to you
- the e-ink is easy on the eyes, and is like reading an actual book - very different (in a good way) from reading off a phone or tablet
- battery life is amazing. I've left this kindle on sleep mode for probably 2 months as I was using the paperwhite version for a bit, and the battery was still at 86%
Cons:
- lag, when highlighting, or just clicking on anything in the e-reader (like the back button, main library button, etc)
- I still personally like reading from a physical book
- wish there were more colour options of the kindle itself, like I would LOVE a white version of this kindle.
- I don't personally like where the power (on/off/sleep) button is located at the bottom of the device. I would prefer it on the top.
- I wish that if you purchase the physical book, you'd get some sort of kindle discount, but there really isn't anything unless the book is on sale or on kindle unlimited, which often times, there are really good sales on kindle books.
Also I think to be noted in this review, is if you can get the kindle cover for this device, I would highly recommend it. When you close the cover, it puts it on sleep mode, so that you don't have to worry about touching the screen and turning a page by accident. And when you open the cover, it automatically opens the book back to where you last left off.
Lastly, I'm a little ashamed to admit this, but I have dropped it several times onto tile and even outside on asphalt, and it has yet to have any effect on the kindle. Not a scratch, not a glitch, not a single turning of the page when it is dropped mid book!
I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an e-reader.

Zero regrets, all pros, zero cons.
Reviewed in Canada on January 29, 2026TLDR - Super compact, easy to use, INCREDIBLE battery life, so many options, great gift for everyone, 0 regrets.
Absolutely LOVE my kindle. So compact it fits in work bags/purses/pockets/lunch bags, perfect to bring anywhere with you so that you’ve got a book on the go rather than lugging around a thicker book. I love physically having books so I still buy ones I’d like to have that way but the kindle with the kindle unlimited subscription is sooooo good for everything else.
Dimmable screen, love the auto-sleep feature when you close the case, love the way it’s easy to use and click through (a lot of small things that are great like clicking the chapter titles are hyperlinks to the main areas or the chapter itself), I also personally don’t mind the black and white aspect to it.
Been meaning to write a review for a while but today I got a low battery warning which made me decide to finally write the review… y’all, when I tell you I ordered this September 14, 2025, charged it ONCE completely to 100% (it came already mostly charged too), leave it on 24/7 (with the auto-dim/screen lock feature when you close the case), and haven’t charged it since!! I use it probably every other night and read a little bit each time, bring it to work to read sometimes, read at apts in waiting rooms, and only now - literal months later, is it finally needing to be charged. It would probably have needed charging sooner if I read for hours every single day but still, the battery life is INCREDIBLE and makes it feel more like an actual book since you’re not stressing about charging it all the time or that it might be dead if you haven’t grabbed it in a while.
Bought another one for my boyfriend as a gift since he’s a crane operator and often brings books in his lunch bag to work - not only does this save him so much room in his bag since it’s tiny but in the freezing cold Canadian weather, he also hasn’t charged his kindle since getting it in September like mine and the cold (from keeping the kindle in cold vehicles) hasn’t really made his battery die faster than expected vs other electronics in the cold. He told me this morning his kindle is STILL at 50%.
Honestly, get one for everyone in your family hahahaha it’s the perfect low maintenance gift!

A Bit Of A Learning Curve
Reviewed in Canada on July 11, 2025As a first time kindle user I've been enjoying the device so far. It is very light weight making it comfortable to hold. There is a bit of a learning curve with the kindle so make sure you pay attention to the instructions as you set up. I found the lowest brightness in the light mode gave the most book like finish. It is compact but the wider screen makes it easier to read than reading on a phone which was what I was doing with it. I had read a lot of reviews saying this was too small but i truly love the size. It fits in my bag comfortably without being bulky so i am able to read it on the go. Which was one of the main reasons I bought it. It has re-ignited my love for reading as it's distraction free. I find myself not dooming scrolling as much. The dark mode is also very easy on the eyes at night and you can play around with the font size, brightness and font boldness to suit your preferences. I've had it for 1 day but so far so good. We'll see how it progresses through the week.

Compact and enjoyable e-reader
Reviewed in Canada on July 12, 2026This Kindle is a great device for anyone who enjoys reading. The compact size makes it easy to carry anywhere, and the lightweight design feels comfortable even during longer reading sessions. The screen is clear, and the faster page turns make the experience feel smooth.
The 16 GB storage is a nice upgrade, giving plenty of space for a large collection of books. The battery life is excellent, and the adjustable front light makes reading comfortable in different environments.
A simple and reliable e-reader that does exactly what it needs to do. It is a great option for casual readers or anyone looking to replace physical books with something more portable.

Great purchase if you want to stop
Reviewed in Canada on September 30, 2026I love my kindle. After having it for around a year now I can say that I don’t really have anything negative to say about it. I love that I can change from a light to dark setting for the background, it has amazing battery life- I can read every night for a couple weeks before having to charge it again. It’s durable. I have a toddler at home and it’s been dropped many times with no issues. Overall I love it! I originally bought it so I could read while nursing my daughter instead of do scrolling for way too long. Being able to read it in the dark was one of the reasons I bought it. One of my better “bigger” purchases.

Light compact and great price
Reviewed in Canada on December 4, 2025I’ve been using the new Amazon Kindle 16 GB in Matcha for a few months, and it’s easily the best Kindle I’ve owned. The first thing I noticed was how light and compact it is—honestly, it disappears in your hand, making it ideal for long reading sessions or tossing in a bag without thinking twice.
The faster page turns are a subtle but impactful improvement. Flipping through pages feels noticeably smoother, especially when skimming or jumping between chapters. The screen is crisp and easy on the eyes, even in bright daylight, and the matcha color is surprisingly elegant—unique without being flashy.
I also love the bump to 16 GB of storage. It feels like I can finally carry my whole library, without worrying about space.
Battery life has been excellent so far, comfortably lasting me over a week with daily use.
If you’re considering upgrading or getting your first e-reader, this model hits the sweet spot between portability, performance, and value. Highly recommended

Client d'Amazon5 out of 5 starsSuper

JADE BROWN5 out of 5 starsEl mejor que tengo!! Me encanta
Reviewed in Spain on October 13, 2026Estoy ENCANTADA.
