Updates from AP’s Decision Team

U.S. Senate battlegrounds

We’re nearing the end of primary season and the stage is set for many of November’s marquee Senate races. In addition to holding their competitive seats in Georgia and Michigan, Democrats need to flip four states to regain control of the chamber, targeting battlegrounds like Ohio, Texas, North Carolina and Maine.

Trump endorsements

President Donald Trump has endorsed a number of GOP primary challengers in an attempt to cull his party of politicians whom he’s deemed insufficiently loyal. Most of his picks so far have been successful, knocking off incumbents in Indiana, Louisiana, Kentucky and Texas. However, the weight of his endorsement has been less decisive for gubernatorial primaries in Minnesota, Iowa and Georgia.

Incumbent losses

The number of incumbents who have lost their primaries has reached double digits. Many of these upsets have been in Democratic primaries, with older members of Congress being ousted by younger challengers in places like Connecticut’s 1st District, Michigan’s 13th District and Colorado’s 1st District.

Redistricting

Redistricting has taken center stage in this year's primary elections and it's playing out at the ballot box, in state legislatures and federal courts across the country. The U.S. Supreme Court knocked down a component of the Voting Rights Act that protected minority representation in Congress, opening a path to more redistricting that could favor Republicans.

Elections this year

Primary voters will select nominees for U.S. Senate in 35 states, governor in 36 states and the U.S. House of Representatives in every state.
