[edit]

Etymology
[edit]Internationalism, based on Dutch Nederland (“the Netherlands; literally “low land””), formed from neder (“down, low”) and land (“land, country”). The name refers to the country's low-lying geography.
The first element derives from Middle Dutch nēder (“down, lower”), from Old Dutch *nithar (“down”), from Proto-West Germanic *niþer (“down, below”), from Proto-Germanic *niþer (“down, below”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *niter (“down”). The second derives from Middle Dutch lant (“land”), from Old Dutch lant (“land”), from Proto-West Germanic *land (“land”), from Proto-Germanic *landą (“land”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ- (“land, heath”).
Parallel international adaptations and formations include Norwegian Nynorsk Nederland, Afrikaans Nederland, Danish Nederlandene, Swedish Nederländerna, German Niederlande and English Netherlands (“the Netherlands”).
