Etymology
[edit]Internationalism, ultimately based on Slovak Slovák (“Slovak”) with the place-name suffix -ia. The international form is first attested in German in 1586.
The ethnonym Slovák is from Slovan (“Slav”) + -ák, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *slověninъ (“Slav”). This word family is traditionally connected with *slovo (“word”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱléwos (“that which is heard; fame”), though the deeper analysis of the ethnonym is uncertain.
Parallel international forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Slovakia, Faroese Slovakia, Finnish Slovakia, Icelandic Slóvakía, Danish Slovakiet, Swedish Slovakien, German Slowakei, Dutch Slowakije, Polish Słowacja, Romanian Slovacia and English Slovakia.
