        Etymology

        [edit]

Internationalism, based on English Wales, from Middle English Wales, from Old English Wēalas, the plural of wealh (“foreigner; Celt; Briton”). The name originally referred to the people rather than their territory.[1] The Old English noun comes from Proto-West Germanic *walh, from Proto-Germanic *walhaz (“Celt; Roman”), generally traced to the name of the Celtic Volcae tribe.[2] The further origin of the tribal name is uncertain.

Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Wales, Danish Wales, Swedish Wales, German Wales and Dutch Wales (“Wales”).
