You shall go back to your mother.
    Isä imotowâ mo pelivanou.

    Iso iepaviilâ sii kâ.

    Isä ipukä ngâ nuwopa.
His/her aunt went to the house.

Usage notes

[edit]

In accordance with a bifurcate merging kinship system, isä is a classificatory kinship term that extends to a maternal aunt (mother’s sister). This mirrors the treatment of the father’s brothers, who are classified as tumo (father).

Unlike Äiwoo sibling terms, isä does not depend on the gender of the possessor. Both men and women use this exact same root to refer to their mother and maternal aunts.

Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From isä (father) +‎ -o, through an earlier form isoi (attested in Agricola). SSA considers this word 'primarily western (Finnish)',[1] although SMS remarks it is common in all dialect regions except Central and South Karelia.[2] First attested as jso in c. 1401.[3] The original senses probably were father as a noun, thence big, grown-up, adult as an adjective.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈiso/, [ˈis̠o̞]
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -iso
