1º ENCONTRO ANUAL i2ADS

SiX: Drawing for Social Re-connectivity – Gaze, Agency and Adaptive XR Drawing Interfaces for Partial Locked-In Syndrome users
Aula Magna

The S.iX project investigates digital drawing as a non-verbal expressive medium for individuals with Locked-In Syndrome (LIS), primarily associated with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Moving beyond functional Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, S.iX reframes computer assisted drawing as a space for agency, expression, and social connection. This directly addresses the call to rethink intersections between Art, Design, and Society by moving creative practice into healthcare and severe disability support. Our iterative, human-centred design process integrates multiple testing phases. Following low-fidelity trials and evaluations using commercial VR tools with able-bodied students and LIS participants from APELA, we are currently testing our native XR prototype, "Inkwell," on the HTC Vive Focus Vision VR Headset with Eye Tracking control as the main drawing mode. Formative trials with university students precede upcoming clinical sessions with APELA participants. A central challenge is the "authorship gap": determining the interaction conditions under which gaze-driven mark-making drawings are experienced as intentional, expressive authorship rather than mere targeting. This requires refining VR interaction specifications—specifically dwell-time activation (0.6–1.2 s) and clickable targets (32–112 dmm) within the 3D canvas. Participant evaluations show significant variation; while some find gaze-drawing intuitive, others experience friction with this unfamiliar paradigm. For i2ADS, S.iX raises essential questions regarding bodily agency, gesture, and inclusive authorship. Designing under extreme motor constraints interrogates normative assumptions embedded in mainstream XR interfaces. By advancing "assistive aesthetics," the project shifts assistive technology from utilitarian data transmission toward empowered creative agency within the drawing field. Ultimately, we hope to demonstrate how technology can be developed through, rather than merely adapted to, diverse bodily capacities—repositioning accessibility as a fundamental right to artistic expression and social exchange.

European Project STEP [Strategies for Transformative Education for art in Public Spaces]
Aula Magna

In a context of multiple crises, Europe is experiencing a democratic downturn, with rising extremes, waning trust in institutions, and national interests overshadowing community ideals. These shifts foster isolation, or “archipelisation”, ultimately shrinking public space. From this perspective, creation for and in public spaces serves as a platform for democratic debate and political expression, mirroring society's challenges and hopes. By addressing key aesthetic, social and political issues, artists and designers spark dialogue and engagement among the public, which can foster new perceptions of complex realities and even new ways of living together.

The project "MitOConexão: Investigating the Mitochondrial Nexus in Onco-Cardiology" (NORTE2030-FEDER-02713500), developed at the University of Porto between RISE-Health (Faculty of Medicine and Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar) and i2ADS (Faculty of Fine Arts), explores the relationships between breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases. It investigates a bidirectional interaction that is still little studied, considering both the cardiovascular complications associated with cancer, in addition to the cardiotoxicity of treatments, and the influence of cardiovascular disease on tumour progression. Recognising mitochondria as regulators of metabolism, inflammation and cell death, the project articulates molecular research and clinical data to identify disease mechanisms and support the development of assessment tools and personalised therapeutic strategies. It includes a cohort of more than 400 breast cancer patients, followed by initial echocardiography and after two years, allowing for the relation of tumour characteristics, treatments and cardiac function. It also aims to develop accessible methods of remote cardiovascular monitoring. The research is organised in three axes: pre-clinical studies (FMUP); clinical studies (ICBAS); and communication and dissemination through art and design research (i2ADS/FBAUP). The third axis is developed through artistic practices and workshops in drawing, photography, scientific illustration, graphic design, and visual communication. Direct collaboration with the teams, the laboratory/clinical contexts, and students from the University of Porto supports a rigorous and creative translation of complex content for diverse audiences. This articulation between art and science seeks to bring researchers, patients and health professionals closer together, promote empathy and broaden public understanding of the results. By valuing artistic knowledge alongside scientific communication, mitOConnexão reinforces the scientific and technological capacity of the North of Portugal and contributes to visual and scientific literacy, the democratisation of knowledge and its appropriation by society, in health contexts.

Movement Guided by the Imagination | Movimento Guiado pela Imaginação (Workshop)
Museu

The work of Erving Goffman, particularly his dramaturgical analysis of human interaction, has influenced countless artists, contributing to the development of approaches to movement based on the body. ‘Movement in Depth’, ‘Intuitive Movement’ and ‘Essential Movement’ are some of the terms that have emerged in an attempt to describe and analyse the strategies through which human movement can reveal and express an identity within social interaction. Mary Whitehouse, a dancer and psychoanalyst, developed a somatic practice which she named Authentic Movement, with the aim of analysing the bodily contexts of movement and the way in which the individual ‘choreographs’ their social body. Through the use of Active Imagination (a Jungian concept), it is possible to recognise habitual bodily patterns that may interfere with effective and expressive movement. This methodology understands the construction of awareness in action as a choreographic/theatrical compositional approach, in which the performer develops somatic wisdom, which is crucial for making creative choices. This workshop combines authentic movement and improvisation techniques, offering an approach to the analysis of movement and improvisation. No prior experience in dance or theatre is required.

From the Islands to the Misfits: Between Encounters, Oral Tradition and Shared Writings | Das Ilhas aos Desajustados: Entre Encontros, Oralidade e Escritas de Partilha
Aula Magna

Each investigation, an Island. We call the Archipelago that which prevents us from becoming a Continent. This proposal presents two action-research practices, developed by the Interest Group "ID_CAI – IDENTIDADES_Coletivo of Acção/Investigação [IDENTITIES _Collective of Action/Research] ": the Ilha [Islands] meetings, integrated in the Arquipélago [Archipelago] program, and the publications Desajustados — Coleção de Textos Falados [Collection of Spoken Texts]. The Islands emerged from the need to share action-research on research projects and artistic practices that emerge from the territories, especially Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Portugal. During the meetings, artists, researchers, and other invited people share thoughts and practices, processes and experiences, questions, stories of resistance and commitment to processes of social transformation. From these presentations and conversations emerges a version of Desajustados, that seeks to continue these meetings through the passage from orality to writing and publication. The Collection of Spoken Texts is produced in a simple, economical, and manual way, through the reproduction on paper of different colours, folding and assembling each copy. More than just a record of what happened, the Desajustados allow these speeches to continue to circulate and take on other forms and times. In this sharing, we would like to present the journey of the ID_CAI between encounter, orality, writing and editing, also reflecting on publication as part of the research process itself and as a way of building memory and circulating practices and knowledge.

Dancing Bodies, Acting Bodies: From the Body that Moves to the Body that Transforms | Corpos Dançantes, Corpos Actantes: Do Corpo que se Move ao Corpo que Transforma
Aula Magna

When two people come together to dance, a face-to-face interaction is established, drawing upon a social and physical repertoire that stems, on the one hand, from a collective history (social, cultural, familial) and, on the other, from each individual’s own experiences and lived realities. This is a shared repertoire of movement patterns that enables two bodies to create a choreography which constitutes a memory of a particular space and time, as well as a heritage of collective rhythms and steps belonging to a universal choreographic library. It should be added that when two people who do not know one another decide to dance in each other’s arms, they bring into play (or should we say into dance) their shared social archive, but, above all, the shared archive that is relevant to their dance. In this way, the dances are subversive, pushing the boundaries of an established social order and bringing a free body onto the stage. The dancing bodies find themselves in a situation of improvisation and, from this perspective, there is no paradigm to constrain them. It is the uniqueness of each performer that creates the choreography. In a dance setting, two bodies who do not know one another are permitted to embrace for a few minutes. In a dancing couple, a series of socially accepted rules for social interaction are replaced by new behaviours. Understood in this way, dancing is more of a creative process than a choreographic structure, since the rules of choreographic structure do not determine the movements, but rather point towards a unique dance. Indeed, when observing a dancing couple, the focus is on the ‘action/interaction’ between the pair rather than on the social order of the choreography. That is to say, whilst dancing, the dancing bodies create a unique imaginary world. Through this paper, we aim to reflect on the implications for artistic creation of images of the everyday body, drawing, to this end, on an analysis of the dancing body.

Creating a Collection of Technical Objects and Media through Artistic Research and Practice Project Presentation
Aula Magna

This presentation introduces the development and ongoing activation of a pilot Collection of Technical Objects and Media at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, as part of Philosophical Media (PhilMe), a research project at i2ADS. The collection brings together historical, obsolete, and broken technical objects as epistemic and creative resources, exploring their potential for artistic research and knowledge production. Drawing on selected PhilMe case studies, the presentation examines three interconnected lines of action: connecting artists and designers with technical objects to explore experimental approaches to preservation, experimentation, and circularity; fostering hands-on engagement to reactivate media and encourage critical awareness; and developing strategies for the systematisation and digitalisation of the collection to support research, knowledge sharing, and accessibility. By combining collection building, documentation, and experimentation, PhilMe positions the collection as both an archive and a site of ongoing inquiry, contributing to debates on media-related cultural heritage and the role of artistic research in fostering situated and sustainable approaches to technical objects.

Experimental Image Stuff
Aula Magna

The project aims to explore experimental graphic research, which unfolds in the expanded field between printmaking and photography, seeking to revisit and re-enact image-making processes based on concepts such as translation, misunderstanding and error. By appropriating processes that have historically been found in the fields of industry and commerce – such as phototype, a 19th-century photomechanical process, or even more recent processes such as thermal printing, commonly used in receipt printers – the research seeks to discover new possibilities for image production. Designed for utilitarian purposes and typically beyond the reach of artists, these photomechanical processes involve their own specific equipment, materials and technologies which, when reinterpreted, can create a fertile ground for experimentation. This is a relational practice, in which technical objects are actors almost as important as the artist, enabling this interplay to bring different visualities and materialities to the fore. In my practice, experimenting with these processes allows the images to take on a life of their own, constantly being translated between contexts, inhabiting the fertile ground of ambiguity between the self and the gesture, between the image and the material. Exploring these paths gives rise to new artistic methodologies and practices of image-making, seeking tools for their reinterpretation outside the strictly artistic realm.

Aula Magna

This PhD research is dedicated to the study of plant morphology and the images of the plant world produced by botanical science. Examining and drawing the dried plants preserved in the Herbarium of the Museum of Natural History and Science at the University of Porto has drawn attention to the procedures that give rise to the silhouettes of the plants on the pages of the Herbarium. Consequently, the arrangement has been explored in two ways: as a subject, considering the layout of the specimens on the paper; and as a methodological exercise, experimenting with the communication of the ideas that drive the research by constructing (and presenting) the work using different points of reference that dictate new orders. Linnaeus’s lists, Humboldt’s maps and Darwin’s corals—which arranged and ordered elements in an attempt to come to terms with the dizzying multiplicity of living organisms and their environments—are examples of the hierarchical operation that the sciences produce in their representations for the communication and organisation of information. The Herbarium also appears to be driven by a desire to organise the multiplicity of the plant world. Achille Mbembe’s [2023] critique of ‘algorithmic reason’ has prompted reflection on the processes of classifying and organising living organisms, and on the underlying premise that the accumulation of data can enable us to understand and master what exists. To confront the immeasurable, one might draw upon the ‘clandestine and cunning knowledge’ that Denétèm Touam Bona [2021] associates with lianas. Vines, lianas or climbing plants wind their way through space, blurring the boundaries of what they traverse, and may serve as a proposal for an alternative methodology for studying the plant world. This outmeasure suggests a task on the scale of the body: to make visible the tangled mass created by the plant’s spreading, as well as, in a closer frame, to notice the coil of the stem as it winds round a neighbouring plant or structure. The alternation between what is commensurate with the size and perception of the human body and the polyphony of the plant world that remains indiscernible may ease the investigation. The tasks of taxonomy and the characteristics of scientific observation are characterised by an approach to what exists in manageable (or handable) doses and sizes, underlining the importance of discussing measurement in this study alongside order and arrangement.

Aula Magna

This research project in the visual arts takes as its starting point the relationship between photography, memory and time, in order to explore how the photographic image can be understood not as a stable object of representation, but as something temporal, processual and subject to transformation. In a context characterised by the continuous production, circulation and accumulation of images, the research seeks to reflect on the consequences of this temporal dispersion on our relationship with photography and with memory. In particular, it examines how material alteration, decomposition, superimposition, intermittency and the processes of the image’s appearance and disappearance can constitute strategies for reconsidering its temporality and performativity. The research is conducted through a methodology of artistic practice as research, in which the processes of production constitute both modes of experimentation and of knowledge construction. Photographic essays, video, installation and printing processes subject to the action of matter, gravity and time are placed in dialogue with theoretical research into the ontology of the image, photography and post-photography, memory and contemporary transformations of temporal experience. The project aims to investigate the conditions under which the image itself can exhibit behaviours associated with instability, transformation and persistence. Artistic practice functions as a ‘time laboratory’ where different temporal regimes of the image are produced, observed and examined. The presentation aims to share the current state of the research, linking the main conceptual issues with a series of experiments and works developed during the PhD, and to discuss how these processes might contribute to a critical reflection on the contemporary post-photographic condition.

Ouver Ligeti
Aula Magna

In this time-constrained talk, we will report on a recent experiment held at Casa da Música, which addressed issues relating to the sensory and aesthetic experience of music and the visual arts, in a conceptual interplay exploring philosophical, poetic, artistic and cultural concepts. Over the course of 30 minutes, we shall reflect on the idea that the intersubjective and constructed nature of auditory and visual perception – with particular emphasis on music – transcends conventional modes of knowledge. Interweaving images from the event with reflections that have since matured, music will be presented as the ‘science of imprecision’, embracing error, the unfinished and the unknowable, as we explore Ligeti’s *Musica Ricercata*, performed by Constantin Sandu, which transports us to sensory and emotional experiences that challenge the very foundations of how we hear, see and feel.

Contemporary Performativities and Materialities | Performatividades e Materialidades Contemporâneas
Aula Magna

This roundtable discussion aims to provide a forum for reflection and debate on the relationships between performativity, the body, matter and space in contemporary artistic practices. Building on the growing porosity between languages, disciplines and modes of production, the aim is to discuss how materialities actively participate in the construction of the performative event – not merely as supports, but as agents of transformation, relationship and knowledge production – and how matter and performance relate to one another, particularly in terms of their relationship with space and time. The proposal also highlights the creation of an i2ADS hub at the Faculty of Performing Arts of the Technical University of Porto, dedicated to furthering research in the areas of contemporary performativities and materialities, whilst maintaining a constant transdisciplinary dialogue within a diverse collaborative space that fosters the re-envisioning of our ways of doing and thinking. This new space aims to serve as an extension of the platform for encounters between artists, researchers, lecturers and students, promoting interdisciplinary dialogue and experimentation between artistic practices and research. The round-table discussion thus aims not only to present different perspectives and practices, but also to contribute to the collective construction of a field of research attentive to the ways in which bodies, materials and technologies produce, transform and question the present.

Critical Territories – The Drawing/Design Dichotomy in Art, Architecture and Design | Territórios Críticos — O Binómio Desenho/Projeto em Arte, Arquitetura e Design
Aula Magna

In Portugal, scientific and artistic study in the fields of Drawing and Project, with regard to an analysis of the current situation, artistic and scientific research that fosters a critical, holistic and broad perspective is scarce in terms of: 1. The intersection of areas of didactic and pedagogical practice; 2. The relationship between training and creation, failing to explore in depth the intersections between Drawing and Project, particularly within the Art-Design-Architecture system, in terms of their disciplinary intersections, in academia and in society. Contributing to the disciplinary field of ‘Drawing across Disciplines’, the aim of this project, within the context of higher education in Portugal, is to examine the current state of theory and practice in Drawing and Project within the fields of Art, Design and Architecture, at a time of radical technological transformation driven by digital technologies. Drawing is understood as a determining factor in the construction of the Project, as an educational offering in terms of expression and creation, and its multiple disciplinary intersections and interactions are highlighted. The aim of this project is to foster critical thinking regarding the current situation of the Drawing/Project dyad in universities and society today, within the fields of Art, Design and Architecture, taking into account both analogue and digital production. It also aims to: 1. To consider drawing and Project in their universal dimension, as a language, and their place and influence within the programs in the aforementioned fields, whilst also taking into account their impact on society; 2. To consider the various levels, stages and complexities within the teaching-learning-research triad; 3. To consider teaching methods and pedagogical practices, with a view to re-evaluating their emphasis on distinct yet complementary subjects in terms of their nature and scope of approach. Two key research questions immediately arise, which, taking the ‘Drawing/Project’ pairing as their subject, trigger critical reflection: 1. What is the role of drawing in the teaching of project in Art, Architecture and Design? 2. What is the impact of the introduction of digital technology and artificial intelligence on the practice of Drawing and on the conception of Project?

Qual o papel do Desenho no ensino do Projeto em Arte, Arquitetura e Design? 2.

Epistemologies of Care and Artistic Creation: Interlacings between the Works and Lifestyles of Portuguese-Speaking Immigrant Women Artists in Portugal
Aula Magna

This research project, developed under an Individual CEEC contract at i2ADS, investigates the relationships between care, artistic creation, and the ways of life of Portuguese-speaking immigrant women artists in Portugal. From an intersectional and decolonial feminist perspective, it examines how displacement, material conditions of existence, support networks, vulnerability, belonging, and resistance intersect with artistic practices and with possibilities of participation in the art field. Situated within Artistic Research and in dialogue with arts-based approaches, the project understands artistic creation not only as an object of study or a means of representation, but also as a practice and method of knowledge production. It asks how artworks, creative processes, narratives, embodied experiences, relationships, and ways of life can generate situated forms of knowledge and challenge hierarchies that separate experience, creation, and research. Care is approached not simply as a theme, but as a collective practice, a form of responsibility, and a potential mode of resistance to individualisation and precarity. Vulnerability, in turn, is considered not as passivity but as an ethical, political, and aesthetic force. The presentation will introduce the conceptual and methodological architecture of the project and discuss its current stage, focused on theoretical and methodological development, mapping the field, and defining criteria for selecting and approaching participating artists. As the project is still in its early stages, the presentation also aims to open these choices to discussion, particularly regarding the construction of a situated, relational, and ethically engaged research process.

Aula Magna

Dur-Ação (or Dur-Aktion) is a hybrid performance–essay that disrupts the productivist linearity of History through the dilation and friction of time. The proposal brings together and superimposes the persistence of matter through time with the legacy, in the form of ruin, of expressionist and performative action art [Aktion], transforming the act of enduring into a gesture of physical resistance and a sharing of the sensible. The performers’ bodies and the space refuse the logic of efficiency and cumulative progress. Rather than moving forward, the performance moves vertically, traversing a vertical time, intensified by a sonic, visual, sculptural, and bodily excavation that proposes a rupture in the chronological line of time. Here, the present ceases to be a transitional link and becomes an abyss in which sounds, sculptures, images, and bodies coincide between what has already happened and what is collapsing before us in this very moment. Dur-Ação [Dur-Aktion] is a manifestation, a performance, an investigation, in which the persistence of matter and of exhausted bodies asserts itself against the vertigo of consumption, articulating the idea that the historical force of the artistic gesture lies in what echoes, in what resists in the form of ruin, and in what gathers density in the depths of the now.
