XLibre Packages for Other Distributions

Please have a look at Are We XLibre Yet? · X11Libre/xserver Wiki to see whether your distribution of choice already provides packages for XLibre. If so, have fun installing and using XLibre! There are no packages for XLibre in your distribution? That may be a litte unpleasant. But distributions decide on their own what to package and what not. We won‘t pressure any of them and completly understand the „wait and see“ approach. For the other ones... Well, let‘s be part of the solution and read on!

You have some options here:

1. Copy And Adjust Xorg Packages

Your distribution already has packages for the Xorg Xserver? That‘s great! Since XLibre is a fork of Xorg, you may just copy the existing source package descriptions, adjust the source URLs, remove some patches already integrated into XLibre and compile the binary packages yourself. Please see our Building XLibre · X11Libre/xserver Wiki page and your distribution‘s documentation for how to do this.

2. Adjust Packages to Suit Your Distribution

Quite a few distributions [1] [2] are derivatives of some major ones. If there are already XLibre source package descriptions for the base distribution then they may be useable for the derivative too. You can tweak them and compile the binaries yourself. Please again see our Building XLibre · X11Libre/xserver Wiki page and your distribution‘s documentation for how to do this.

3. Build Your Own XLibre

In case there are no ready made or adjustable packages, you can resort to building XLibre yourself. Please see the Building XLibre · X11Libre/xserver Wiki page for how to do this.

Whatever above option you may choose: If things get out of hand, take a look at the existing discussions. Your problem may have been solved by now. 😉 If not, then please feel free to create a new discussion here in this category.

Become an XLibre Package Maintainer

You've got your packages working? Excellent! Why not create a third-party repository and share these packages with the community? There are many distribution-specific solutions like Arch User Repositories (AUR) or Personal Package Archives (PPA) for Debian and Ubuntu as well as third party repositories for Redhat-like ones and many others for other package managers.

Take a glance at the links in the paragraph above and some existing third-party repositories maintained by our community to get an idea of how to get things going.

We Are Here to Help

The discussions here are meant to get to know each other and to provide help by the users for the users. To further support packaging we at Xlibre offer you to host the source package descriptions as we already do for X11Libre/pkgbuilds-arch-based and X11Libre/ports-gentoo. For hosting binary packages and some sort of automation we will find a solution together too. Just create a new organizational task with what you need.

I find the BSDs are a bit off-topic in this section.
Perhaps they would be more at home in "Welcome to XLibre on BSD."

Even better, create parent directories: "Linux distributions", "BSD distributions", "Illumos distributions!, ... and transfert all things related by OS.

Yes, this is a good idea and also possible since Github Discussions support structuring into sections and categories. Unfortunately, there is a hard limit of max 25 categories per Github repository which we hit... yesterday. So we have to come up with a better concept for the "Packaging for Distributions" section either way. Probably by moving them into their own repository and linking them from a "landing thread" in the organization-wide discussions resp. Are We XLibre Yet? · X11Libre/xserver Wiki page.

Sorry, I was right and wrong at the same time: There is a hard limit on 25 discussion categories per repository, not on the number of discussions. I have updated my comment above.

@fredvs I've created the section X11Libre/packaging Xlibre On Bsds · Discussions · GitHub and moved all BSD-related discussions there. So considering this done. 😉 I'd remove this comments here if you are ok with it.

Tango has asked me, Quote: ask you once again to provide a description of how you installed XLibre on Loc-OS so that others can follow your steps.
I am absolutely flabbergasted by this simple request as the simple answer is staring everyone in the face – follow XLibre instructions for either Debian or for latest LocOS 24 follow instructions for Devuan – it is just that simple even for a 75 year old pensioner with no knowledge of config files or coding.

Note: There are many web search results which lead you to incorrect old XLibre pages – surely these can be deleted to give a simple 404?

Loc-OS history? In simplest form started out as a perfectly licence compliant remake of Debian systemd free antiX22 with LXDE and later a version with Xfce.
Ensuing arguments with antix’s Anticapitalista got us banned from their forum with adverse commentary on Loc-OS Sourceforge web page only later to for him to acknowledge Loc-OS as an independent distro.
However any post on any Linux forum about Loc-OS will get you banned with death threats from the usual trolls+admin duo. We have such a rule breaking Debian troll here!

Moving on to Devuan based Loc-OS 24 you have to use a complex (for me) installer – even with video help every install seemed different with various faults; expected of a brand new release. Meaning that I could not attribute faults to Loc-OS, Devuan, Debian or XLibre. Yes I got it installed on all three laptops but was never happy and could not trust it as a daily driver.
Loc-OS 23 was never any trouble and was lightening fast without the complex massive ‘Swiss Army Knife’ menu of the equally reliable, fast and efficient antiX22-Full.
Latest Debian and Devuan updates caused more problems so with great reluctance I have wiped Loc-OS 24 from all computers while I await a more easy to install version.
Ironically I have once again repeated the now well trod path of hollowing out antiX removing shedloads of stuff till it breaks resulting in miniMAX. (This time I have installed LXDE and Openbox plus XLibre first rather than lastly.)

I doubt if this has helped anyone but if I am asked I always try to oblige :)
