En xeral os membros desta suborde son aves de tamaño de madiano a grande, máis adaptadas ao voo que as limícolas, coas que comparten orde. A maioría son aves acuáticas que viven no mar ou en zonas húmidas, aínda que en inverno algunhas poden afastarse da costa dirixíndose ao interior continental. Porén, hai excepcións, como as especies do xéneroCursorius, que viven en estepas e desertos.
