This week, I had the pleasure of moderating the ITU-D Study Group 1 Question 2/1 workshop on “Next-generation broadcasting: challenges and prospects for developing countries” in Geneva.
The workshop brought together experts from different regions and backgrounds to discuss the evolution of broadcasting, emerging technologies, spectrum management, regulatory and policy challenges, and countries’ experiences in the transition to digital broadcasting.
We also discussed how technologies such as application-oriented television, digital radio and IP-based delivery are reshaping the broadcasting landscape, and what this means for developing countries working towards a sustainable transition.
An important theme was also the role of broadcasting in emergency communication and early warning systems, particularly in an era of disinformation and AI-generated content. In times of crisis, trust matters as much as speed: broadcasters play a vital role in verifying, authenticating, contextualising and communicating reliable information to the public.
I would like to express my sincere appriciation to all our distinguished speakers for sharing their expertise and expirience through such insighrful and high-quality presentations:
👏Joe Frans , Philomena Gnanapragasam, Prof. Dr. Marcelo Moreno , Ruxandra Obreja , Fabiano Chaves, Annalisa Durantini, Thiago Soares,Tatsuma Shibata, Amal Punchihewa (PhD, MEng, CEng, FIET, FEngNZ, SMIEEE), Peter Djakwah, Walid Mathlouthi and David Enselme KY.
Your expertise and the diverse perspectives you brought to the workshop made the discussions particularly enriching. I am grateful for your time, engagement and willingness to share your knowledge and experience, which will be valuable as we continue our work under Question 2/1.
My sincere thanks also go to Roberto Hirayama, Chair of ITU-D Study Group 1, for his guidance and support, and to the ITU BDT Secretariat for its cooperation and assistance in making the workshop possible.
A very special thank you to Ounfanatt Edui Moka for her outstanding support, dedication and all the work behind the scenes.
I would also like to thank the Question 2/1 Managment Team for their continued cooperation.
It was a pleasure to bring this community together for an important discussion on the future of broadcasting and the opportunities it can create for developing countries.
Looking forward to continuing the work and building on the insights and ideas shared during the workshop.
