The Chain of Becoming: A Unified Theory of Human TranscendenceZachary Nathaniel HallEbookOur lives have never been more comfortable, and we have never been less at peace. Beneath everything you do runs an older program. It was written to keep an animal alive in a hostile world, and it is still running, still pulling the strings of your fear and your anger. Most of what we suffer comes from it: the fear that fires before thought, the beliefs a painful past wrote and never revised, the habits we cannot seem to quit. This book takes each of them apart and shows how to climb above them, with will to govern the animal and wisdom to see past it, toward a peace that does not depend on how the day goes. The Chain of Becoming is a map for the entire climb, one line running from the animal we begin as toward something we can barely imagine. It traces that line through psychology, evolution, physics, and the world’s religions, which turn out to have been describing the same path, and then follows the logic to the soul and the nature of reality. And the climb does not stop at one person. The same program, running in billions of us at once, is driving a species with the power to end itself. If enough of us climb, the book argues, a different world becomes possible, a civilization that runs on cooperation in place of fear. It calls that world the Eternal Calm. Inside: Why the seven deadly sins are survival instincts, and what happens when they run your life How trauma writes the beliefs that keep you stuck, and how those beliefs loosen The two pillars of the climb, will and wisdom, and how to put each to work What the world’s religions and philosophers were all pointing at, side by side The soul, the structure of time, and why the climb runs past one life The animal is only the first link in the chain. This is a book about the climb.
