This year 2026 is the Year of the Horse and the significance of the zodiac can be witnessed globally. Therefore we at Makanan would like you to experience the world of horses through different artifacts.

The first artifact to be introduced is the painting located at the entrance which is of Indian origin. Although there was so no explanation given when it was acquired, it was said that they symbolized strength, speed, progress, and prosperity. I also believe that it symbolizes Kantanka, the beloved horse of Shakyamuni (Gautama Buddha). When Shakyamuni undertook path to enlightenment, he had bid an emotional adieu to his white horse. It was further believed that despite returning to the palace, the horse undertook reincarnation as a saint and had become a devotee of Shakyamuni.

As we enter inside, straw dolls and "Chaguchagu" Umakko dolls can be seen lined up. Although unfamiliar in other places, it is believed that these horses were beloved and cherished as family members in the Tohoku region.

During the devastating Tohoku Earthquake in 2011, several members and horses of Soma Nomaoi festival had tragically lost their lives. Yet, its wonderful to see the revival of the festival in the present day.

This is the painting of Hida ema that was received 15 years ago during the founding of CAMICA.

At the end, the picture represents Chinchin horse of Okinawa.

Horses represent moving forward, proceeding, and galloping.
