Old European Currencies（古い欧州の通貨）

While tidying up my room a few days ago, I stumbled upon three old foreign banknotes. The first note was a 50 Norwegian krone note, which is equivalent to around 820 yen at the current exchange rate. As the currency is still in circulation, and the note appears to be valid, I will exchange it for Japanese yen one day in Japan. Although I wish that I could spend it in Norway, that is unlikely. The remaining two notes – a 500 Portuguese escudo ( approx 100 yen) and a 100 Belgian franc note (approx 300 yen) – are no longer legal tender, having been replaced by the euro, the European Union’s single currency. So, I plan to sell them to a numismatic dealer.
Looking back on my time in Europe, as the euro had not yet been introduced, each European country had its own currency: the French franc, Italian lira, Spanish peseta, Swiss franc, Greek drachma, Dutch guilder, Finnish markka, Swedish krone and Danish krone. Interestingly Norway, Sweden and Denmark all used ‘krone’, but these were independent and not interchangeable.
Back then, whenever I travelled on business between European countries, I had to exchange any foreign currencies I had with me for the local currency. At that time, I did not care about foreign exchange fees I paid every time I visited a different European country, because the cost seemed negligible. So, I did not claim the cost as a business expense.
Now that I think about it, however, the cost must have added up to a significant amount, because I was at a currency exchange two or three times a week for six years. This means that I saved my company a considerable amount of money.
I’m painfully aware of how overly generous I can be.

　数日前、部屋を片づけていると、外国の古い紙幣が3枚出てきました。1枚目はノルウェーの50クローネ札で、現在の為替レートではおよそ820円ほどです。この通貨は今でも流通しており、紙幣も有効のようなので、いつか日本で日本円に両替しようと思っています。本当はノルウェーで使えたらいいのですが、それはたぶん難しいでしょう。残りの2枚、ポルトガルの500エスクード（約100円）とベルギーの100フラン札（約300円）は、欧州連合の単一通貨であるユーロに置き換えられたため、すでに法定通貨ではなくなっています。これらは古銭・古紙幣を扱う業者に売ろうと思っています。
　ヨーロッパで過ごした頃を振り返ると、まだユーロは導入されておらず、ヨーロッパの国々はそれぞれ独自の通貨を使っていました。フランス・フラン、イタリア・リラ、スペイン・ペセタ、スイス・フラン、ギリシャ・ドラクマ、オランダ・ギルダー、フィンランド・マルッカ、スウェーデン・クローナ、そしてデンマーク・クローネなどです。面白いことに、ノルウェー、スウェーデン、デンマークはどれも「クローネ」という名前の通貨を使っていましたが、互いに独立した通貨であり、互換性はありませんでした。
　当時、ヨーロッパの国々を出張で移動するたびに、持っている外貨をその国の通貨に両替する必要がありました。ですがその頃は、国を移動するたびに支払っていた両替手数料のことをあまり気にしていませんでした。金額は大したことがないように思えたからです。そのため、その費用を会社に経費として請求することもしませんでした。
　しかし今になって考えると、その費用はかなりの額になっていたに違いありません。というのも、私は6年間、週に2、3回は両替所に行っていたからです。つまり結果的に、私は会社のためにかなりの金額を節約していたことになります。
　自分がどれほどお人よしというか、気前がよすぎるところがあるのかを、あらためて痛感しています。
