炬燵の上で丸くなるのも猫なら、灼熱のサボンナを疾走するチーターも猫の仲間である。大きさも生きる環境も大きく異なるが、猫族は野生を失うことなく進化してきた。ハローキティのように愛らしい姿の猫も、決して野生を失ってはいない。しかも「蝶よ、花よ」とお姫様のような存在である。その対極にあるのが、野性的な容姿と「不機嫌な表情」が人気の《マヌルネコ》である。モンゴルやカザフスタン、ロシアなどに住んでいる。砂漠のような場所に住んでいるからではなく、極端に神経質で人をよせつけないからといわれる。そもそもマヌルネコとは、名前のマヌル(manul)はモンゴル語の「小さい野生ネコ」のこと。属名Otocolobusは「耳が短い」の意味だそうだ。

その姿がなぜか人の心に残る

四月二十三日は「国際マヌルネコの日」である。
中央アジアの乾いた草原に生きる、小さな野生の猫。
丸く、平たい顔。分厚い毛皮。いつも少し不機嫌そうな表情。

マヌルネコは長く、動物好きのあいだで知られる存在にすぎなかった。
ところが十年ほど前から、日本では突然のように人気が広がった。
動物園の写真や動画がSNSに流れ、「世界一表情が変わらない猫」「怒っているように見える猫」として拡散されたのである。

研究者のあいだでは、半ば冗談のように
「日本はマヌルネコ文化圏」
と呼ばれることもあるらしい。
もちろん理由は、ただ「かわいい」からではない。

マヌルネコの顔は、どこか不思議な造形をしている。
目は半ば閉じ、頬は横に広く、表情は静かでほとんど動かない。

それを見ていると、ときどき別のものを思い出す。
古い仏像の顔である。

平安のころにつくられた仏像には、
静かに目を伏せ、感情をほとんど表さない顔が多い。
喜びも怒りもなく、ただそこに在るだけのような表情。

その顔を前にすると、人は安心する。
あるいは、言葉にならない静けさに包まれる。

マヌルネコの顔にも、どこかそれに似たものがある。
可愛いというより、むしろ「動じない」。
感情を見せないことで、かえって人の想像を引き出す顔。

そういうものを、日本人は昔から好んできた。

派手に笑うものより、
少し黙っているもの。

動き回るものより、
ただ静かに座っているもの。

だからなのだろう。
この草原の猫は、遠い国の動物でありながら、
どこか見慣れた顔のようにも思えてくる。

人はその理由をうまく説明できない。
けれど、動物園の向こうにその顔を見ていると、
なぜかほっとしてしまう。

おそらくそれは、
静かなものの中に、美しさを見つける感覚である。

そして、その感覚は、
この国のあちこちの古い風景にも、
ひそかに残っている。

April 23 is known as International Pallas’s Cat Day.

The Pallas’s cat is a small wild cat that lives across the cold grasslands of Central Asia. It has a round, flattened face, thick fur, and an expression that often looks slightly annoyed.

For a long time, it was a creature known mainly to wildlife researchers and dedicated animal lovers.

But something unusual happened in Japan.

Over the past decade, the Pallas’s cat suddenly became popular. Photos and short videos from zoos spread across social media. People began sharing the same comment again and again:
“the most unimpressed cat in the world.”

Its face—wide, still, and strangely dignified—became a quiet internet phenomenon.

Today, Japan is one of the countries that keeps and breeds the most Pallas’s cats in zoos. Some wildlife researchers even joke that Japan has become a kind of “Pallas’s cat cultural zone.”

Of course, the reason cannot simply be that the animal is cute.

There is something unusual about the face of a Pallas’s cat. The eyes appear half-closed. The cheeks spread gently outward. The expression barely changes.

When you look at it long enough, it begins to resemble something else.

An old Buddhist statue.

Many statues from Japan’s Heian period have a similar expression—eyes lowered, the face calm and almost without emotion. They do not smile, yet they do not appear sad. They simply exist in stillness.

Standing before such a statue, people often feel a quiet sense of peace.

The face of the Pallas’s cat carries something similar.
It does not perform emotion. It does not try to entertain. Instead, it remains quietly itself.

And perhaps that is why people in Japan feel drawn to it.

For centuries, Japanese aesthetics have often favored what is subtle rather than dramatic, quiet rather than expressive. Beauty can appear in restraint, in stillness, in the small pause between movements.

The Pallas’s cat, sitting silently with its round, unchanging face, seems to embody that feeling without trying.

It is a wild creature of the Central Asian steppes.
Yet somehow, when people here look at it, the face feels strangely familiar.

No one can quite explain why.

But watching that calm, unmoving expression, one cannot help feeling a certain quiet comfort.

Perhaps it is the same feeling that lingers in many old landscapes of this country—
the beauty of things that simply remain still.
