The Fox’s Midnight Market
The night market glowed with a single, solitary lantern.
Amidst the velvet darkness, a lone food stall stood, as if waiting for a phantom.
The noren curtain hung proudly, inscribed with the bold words: "The Fox’s Inari Sushi."
On this evening of the great shrine festival, Mii lay curled in bed, held captive by a cold.
She had promised Sacchan they would go together—a promise now broken.
Perhaps that was why this dream found her.
"Delicious, sweet Inari Sushi! Step right up, little miss, how about a bite?"
The man at the stall called out, his face etched with an inviting, winsome smile.
"No, thank you," Mii murmured. "I’d rather have crepes or chocolate bananas."
Yes, that was it. She wanted to walk beside Sacchan, sharing treats and laughter. She had imagined the joy of it all—the prize-draw games, the smart-ball stalls. How could it be that only this one shop existed?
A dry cough escaped her lips. Her skin still hummed with fever.
"Little miss, this Inari won’t cure every ailment under the moon—not quite—but one bite is enough to banish a common cold. Why not try one? The price is, but a single coin... or even just one yen will do."
One yen? It sounded rather suspicious. Still, it was only a dream, she thought.
Mii reached into her pockets, but her purse was nowhere to be found.
"I’m so sorry..." She whispered, saddened by the lack of even a single yen.
"I see... I suppose it wasn’t meant to be this time, either."
The man’s face was shadowed with a profound, quiet regret.
"You see, ages ago, I sold 'miracle' medicines that promised to heal all, and made a fortune. But in truth, they were nothing more than balls of mud. The gods, in their wisdom, grew furious. They decreed that until I could find a living soul to buy one single item, crafted with heart and sincerity, I would remain bound to this endless penance."
Mii’s eyes widened at the grand, fable-like tale. Yet, if it were true, her purchase could be the key to his redemption. A heavy, aching sympathy bloomed in her chest.
"It is quite all right, really. I shall try again at the next festival," he said softly. "The money is not needed. But please, would you simply taste one? It would mean so much to me, as I have laboured over it with such care."
Mii took the sushi offered to her and took a bite. It was sweet, tangy, and deeply, wonderfully delicious.
"So, so... I am glad."
In an instant, the man’s body began to shimmer with a soft, ethereal light.
Before she knew it, the man had transformed... into a fox, wearing a towel tied neatly around his head.
He gazed at his own long-forgotten fox paws, tears spilling from his eyes.
"Ah, at last... I am a fox once more. The gods have forgiven me for shedding my greed. Thank you, little one."
With that, Mii’s eyes fluttered open.
Morning sunlight streamed through the window.
Her cold was gone, as if it had never been.
[Afterword]
This story was born from the inspiration of The Wonderful Adventures of Nils by Selma Lagerlöf.
In that world, there lies a city called "Vineta," a place of immense prosperity and glory. However, the townspeople grew so consumed by decadence and excess that they stirred the wrath of the gods, causing the city to sink into the depths of the sea.
Once every hundred years, when the city rises to the surface, if a living human purchases even a single item from its people, the city may finally remain upon the land forever.
Though Nils travels through many lands, this particular tale lingered in my mind. Perhaps it is because, as a child, it broke my heart that Nils was unable to save that city.
