Although there were no calenders or clocks in that place, Robert knew when he needed to be at work. He paid off the rent and kept going to work to make sure we could all afford essentials. After the first week, a new letter came in, and this one said that rent would cost 150. Robert was offered overtime at work to cover the difference, and he took it with a smile.

He started coming home later in the afternoon, but Nancy and Patrick never mind it. Then the following week, the rent increased again to 200, more overtime. Every few days I would ask Robert if he'd mind if I came to work with him. Perhaps we could both take a job. But he insisted to the point of frustration, " No, you're our guest." And so I waited, looked after Patrick while Nancy was busy, and lay on the sofa waiting. In that time, there was still on news about Peggy. The city gorvernment clearly knew our adress, so letter should have arrived with updates on her condition, But no. The family still had faith that she'd recover. They did'nt worry like they used to. And as the weeks went by, they mentioned Peggy less and less. I said this with no animosity towards them, knowing what was happning, but I began to feel like they didn't care about her anymore.

Week after week, as sumner waned in the evenings grew longer, conversation between Robert and Nancy got shorter and shorter, they always smiled, hugged, and kissed and shared a bed, but barely spoke. What started as, " Nice day, my love. Always beautiful, sweetheart. " Slowly lost words like they were being told along with the rent until all they would say was " Hm? Hm." I listend to that same exchange of syllables until bacame torturous so terrified and constantly stricken with the pressure on my lungs that I really moved from the sofa, and they never me either. I must have looked comfortable. The rent rose week on week and so did Robert's hours. No anxiety, no suspicion, smiles, trust, hope. My own inaction continued until this same interaction happened like always. But something broke. " Hm? Hm?" And they hugged, but they didn't break apart. For 15 minutes, they stood motionless, holding each other.

Patrick walked out of his room and looked up at them against the eerie quitness of a building with no neighbors. So, no neighbors and sidewalks with no footsteps. All I heard Patrick's voice. " Mommy? Daddy? " He would wait a few seconds, exactly 10, before asking again. " Mommy? Daddy? " I looked on in horror as my then best friend and his family had bacome little more than a windup toy. Blinking shivering tears out of my eyes. I could only blame myself. I promised to get them out. I promised I'd save them if something happened. But this was different. When you get to my age, you start to believe you've seen it all. Before any of this happened, I pictures some gang I could fend off, some monster I could protect them from. Not their own blisful smiles while their brains turned to soup inside their skulls. After all I'd seen them go through, the tears I'd watched them shed. I wanted them to be happy. didn't I ? Sure I did. But not as much as I wanted be happy. Back in Camden, I thought I'd finally done it. I had a home, a friend, a peaceful living. With the grip this town had on my one and only friend, I knew that if I tried to tear him away from it, I might lose him.

So I let him do this. I let this happen. I sat and steared, listening to Patrick call for his parents in the same monotonous drone for hours. " Mommy? Daddy? " " Mommy? Daddy? " I don't remember when, but at some point I fall asleep. And When I woke up, it was dark and they'd all gone to bed. My mind raced, retreading the day before and every day since we'd arrived. I hated myself for how little I'd done, knowing there might have been a point where I could have gotten them out. Maybe I still could. Maybe this time wouldn't be like the others. I might still have a chance. When morning came, like clockwork, Robert gathered his things and got ready to go to work. I got ready to persuade him as best I could and I asked if I could go to work with him that day. I expected the usual no, but to my surprise, he went " Hn" in a positive tone. We hopped in the same Model T and drove just 5 minute to the place to work. It’s exterior identical to the apartment. Inside, there was no one on the door, nor a secretary behind a desk, just a button and a letter box on the left hand wall. Pressing the button, Robert saw that today his code was 39H. Without a word, he walked down a windowless corridor past an endless series of doors.

Peering through the little windows on them, finally had a glimpse of some other people who lived in that city starting down their typewriters. They clicked and clacked and cliked and clacked. Same posture, same demeanor, same everything. Then Robert arrived at his desk. He invited me in, shut the door behind him, and began to write. His assignment was the same as always. What are you worries ? Many of you who know me will know I have a pretty poor memory, save for the random specific here or there. A hundred years later, I remember every word he wrote. I remember my love. I remember her mother. I remember my friend. I remember my child. I don't remember their names. What are their names ? What are their names ? What are their names? What are their names? What are their names? What are their names? I heard him whimpering and whining like a dog as he typed.
