Humans have unleashed a predator that is threatening Hawaii’s native birds | KTLA

Conservationists in Hawaii are sounding the alarm over a surge in attacks by a predatory species that isn’t native to the islands and is feasting on endangered birds.

“It might surprise you, but one of the biggest threats to native birds in Hawaiʻi has a familiar face,” the National Park Service said in a social media post. “The domestic cat.”

The Park Service shared trail camera footage of a feral cat running off with an endangered uaʻu chick, or Hawaiian petrel, from its burrow on Mauna Loa at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On Kauai, 168 uaʻu kani, or wedge-tailed shearwaters, were killed last week alone, officials said. Cats are believed to be the culprit.

Instead of capturing feral cats for adoption or euthanasia, Swindle said many are allowed to roam free – and native birds are paying the price.

As this contentious and emotional issue plays out, the National Park Service is urging pet owners to keep their cats indoors, not to feed feral cats (which can carry a fine in some cities) and not to abandon unwanted pets.

“Extinction is forever. But it’s preventable,” the agency said.
