The Future of Capitalism(session 5

English follows the Japanese;

第六回目の授業、「企業と地球の関係について考える」では、環境問題の根本的な解決をめざす国際環境NGOのGreen Peaceより二人のSpeakerを招かれ、彼らが企業や政府と行っている会話について学び、ロールプレイを経験しました。このセッションにおいて、私がとても関心をもったのは、コメンテーターの役割を果たされた、アジア気候変動に関する投資家グループの方が共有してくださった資料です。(投資家コミュニティ)は、 持続可能な社会に向けて、具体的な「Collective Impactの在り方」を創り上げているようでした。以下一部共有致します;

In the fifth lecture of "The Future of Capitalism" by Shizenkan, we delved deeper into "Exploring Purpose-Driven Management and New Corporation Models." The discussion on "Social Value-Creating Capitalism" was further enriched.

The case studies we learned about include:

  1. "Société à Mission" in France: This is a corporate form based on French law, where companies specify social and environmental goals in their articles of incorporation. The achievement of these goals is overseen by a dedicated mission committee and an independent third party.

  2. B Corp Certification by the American non-profit organization B Lab (established in 2006): This certification is awarded to for-profit companies that promote business activities generating comprehensive benefits not only for shareholders but also for employees, consumers, communities, and the environment. As of March 2025, 53 companies in Japan have been certified as B Corps.

In the sixth lecture, "Reflecting on the Relationship Between Companies and the Planet," we invited two speakers from the international environmental NGO Greenpeace, which aims to fundamentally solve environmental issues. We learned about their conversations with companies and governments and experienced role-playing. What particularly interested me in this session was the material shared by a commentator from the Asia Investor Group on Climate Change. The investor community seems to be creating concrete "Collective Impact" approaches towards a sustainable society. Here are some shared examples:

  1. A guide for investors to accompany companies aiming for a sustainable economy: This is a comprehensive framework for companies to utilize their existing resources while developing self-assessments and transition plans.

  2. Recommendations from the investor community to governments: This calls on governments to introduce policies that impact the entire national economy (e.g., promoting technological development, introducing carbon pricing mechanisms, revising government procurement standards, implementing transition strategies in high-emission sectors, mandating disclosure of climate-related risks and measures by financial institutions and companies, and further mobilizing private investment).
