#15 The Last Passenger

The man had spent his life driving a taxi.

Every day, he carried people to where they needed to be.

He had rushed an expectant mother to the hospital just before she gave birth. He had driven an elderly man to countless medical appointments over the years. He had taken young travelers to the airport, their eyes fixed on dreams waiting beyond the horizon.

Some were heading toward new beginnings.
Others toward painful goodbyes.

Over time, he realized something.

He wasn't simply taking people from one place to another.

He was delivering them to the next chapter of their lives.

But times changed.

Fully autonomous vehicles became the norm, and human drivers were no longer needed.

Today was the last day a human driver's license would ever be valid.

So he waited for his final passenger.

At sunset, a young boy climbed into the back seat.

"Where to?" the driver asked.

The boy held up a small device.

Autonomous Driving Control Center

The driver frowned.

"Going on a tour?"

The boy nodded.

"Tomorrow, I'll be the one guiding this city."

The driver chuckled.

"You?"

The boy turned toward the window and smiled quietly.

The driver eased through one final curve.

When they arrived, the boy stepped out of the taxi, bowed politely, and said,

"Thank you.

You taught us why people carry other people."

The driver watched in silence as the boy disappeared into the fading light.

He looked down at the steering wheel.

This city no longer needed his hands.

As darkness settled over the streets,

he quietly let go of the wheel.
