#20 “Kindness Never Ends with One Person”

One rainy day, a man saw a high school student on crutches fall on the stairs at a train station.

He gathered the textbooks scattered across the wet steps, checked that the boy was all right, and even gave him money for a taxi.

“Thank you,” the student said, bowing again and again. “Someday, I’ll repay you.”

The man smiled.

“You don’t have to repay me. Just help someone else when they need it.”

Twenty years passed.

The student had become a teacher who used a wheelchair.

One day, he learned that one of his students was about to give up on college because his family could not afford the application fees. The teacher paid them himself.

“Why would you do this much for me?” the student asked.

“Because someone once did the same for me.”

Years later, that student became the owner of a small factory.

During a recession, one of his business partners was on the verge of bankruptcy. Even though it meant sacrificing his own profits, he continued sending them work and kept the company alive.

A young employee at the rescued company never forgot what had been done for them.

Eventually, he left to start a home-care service.

Then, one winter day, an elderly man came to him for help.

The man had no family, could no longer work because of illness, and could barely afford the service fees.

“We’ll worry about the money later,” the owner said. “First, let’s help you rebuild your life.”

The old man began to cry.

He was the same man who had helped the student on crutches all those years ago.

Later, he asked the owner why he had shown him such kindness.

The owner shook his head.

“Someone helped me once. So when I see someone in trouble, I try to help them too.”

At those words, the old man suddenly remembered a rain-soaked staircase at a train station.

He looked out the window.

On the snow-covered street, a boy had fallen and dropped the books he was carrying.

A woman passing by stopped.

Then she bent down to help.
