A Doctor Who Stayed in My Memory Because He Was Not Perfect — A Human Encounter with an Orthopedic Surgeon Through My Fracture — July 7, 2026 (Tuesday) Reiwa8
It was the night before I was going to be discharged from the hospital.
The doctor said, “I took some photos during the surgery, so I’ll show them to you.”
I am someone who values promises. I thought I should not be disrespectful to the doctor, so I sat properly in my room and waited.
I waited for about 30 minutes.
However, the doctor never came.
I assume that, with many responsibilities from surgeries and medical care, the doctor became busy and simply forgot about the promise.
A nurse kindly noticed the situation and showed me a little of the image displayed on the computer. I could see the plate and screws that had been placed in my shoulder.
After that, there was another memorable moment regarding my next outpatient appointment after discharge.
My next appointment had already been scheduled before anyone asked about my own plans.
I already had an appointment with another department on that day, so after returning home, I had to rearrange my schedule.
At my outpatient visit, I told the doctor about it.
“Doctor, I have my own schedule as well. I would appreciate it if you could ask me before setting an appointment.”
At first, the doctor responded in his usual manner.
However, afterward, he bowed his head several times.
Then, when we arranged the next appointment, he asked,
“How about this day and this time?”
and checked my schedule first.
I was happy to see that small change.
People are not perfect from the beginning.
Sometimes we forget things while being busy.
However, through relationships with others, we can notice things and gradually change.
Watching that happen, I felt that doctors are also human beings, just like everyone else.
