UConn School of Social Work faculty Sukhmani Singh, Ph.D., Gio Iacono, and Megan Paceley join colleagues in exploring this question in a new article published Oct. 15 in the Journal of Social Issues. Their article, “Fragmentation and manufactured ambivalence: Necessary unlearnings for intersectional critical action with queer and trans youth,” invites deeper reflection on how we understand and advance social change. 📖 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/e34vEUE6

On Oct. 3, more than 20 University of Connecticut students became certified Election Moderators for the State of Connecticut! 🇺🇲 📚 ✅ As part of the UConn Hartford NextGen Elections Program, participants completed 10 hours of training through a combination of asynchronous and in-person sessions, including training with the Office of the Connecticut Secretary of the State. Following training, students will be connected with local election officials and assigned to polling locations, where they will work for at least two days during the 2026 election period. Connecticut’s 2026 general election early voting period is Oct. 19 through Nov. 1, with Election Day on Nov. 3. The program, spearheaded by the UConn School of Social Work’s Nancy A. Humphreys Institute for Political Social Work and funded through a grant from Campus Compact, provided participants with a $125 program stipend and compensation for their election work at the rate established by their assigned election office. 🇺🇲 📚 ✅ 🇺🇲 📚 ✅ 🇺🇲 📚 ✅ “It’s important to get younger people interested and involved in the political process, and becoming a poll worker embeds them in elections in their own communities,” says Shannon Lane, director of the Humphreys Institute and professor-in-residence. “Being a poll worker is a very tangible form of civic engagement.” The training took place in the Hartford Times Building on the UConn Hartford campus. Dr. Lane and Sue Larsen, the democratic registrar of voters, conducted the training. Next month, Jie Zhao, a second-year Ph.D. student in the UConn School of Social Work, will give her first oral conference presentations—three at once!—at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. 👏 As lead author, she'll present a study using a dataset from Malaysia examining sex work, substance use, and depressive symptoms among 374 cisgender and transgender women who reported recent sex work. Zhao’s UConn dissertation asks how telehealth-related health policy affects substance use care in rural areas, with a focus on federally qualified health centers. These serve low-income and rural populations and are directly shaped by federal policy. Learn more about Jie and her research in this UConn Today article!https://lnkd.in/esy2VDeK
