Immigration Equality
Immigration Equality turns up across our immigration reporting, most recently in a 2026 first-person piece asking whether the American Dream still exists and in a 2023 story about a Michigan man kept apart from his husband by the U.S. government for more than a decade. Earlier coverage tracked the group through the Trump years — the legal challenge that blocked the "Death to Asylum" rule, reports that HIV status was used to justify family separation at the border and calls for ICE to release detainees at heightened risk during Covid. We've also followed the organization back through the fight over LGBTQ+ provisions in the 2013 immigration reform bill, the 2011 plan to sue the federal government, the first congressional hearing on LGBT immigration equality in 2009 and the long campaign to lift the HIV travel ban.
