One of Guardians of the Galaxy's most popular members has solo adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's I Am Groot series of shorts on Disney+, and some of them rank higher than others due to several elements. Vin Diesel debuted as the voice of the adult version of Groot in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. After the character died in his first MCU film, a new version of Groot emerged; with the popular Baby Groot being born, Diesel would continue to voice the character as he grew, with multiple Groot actors doing the motion capture for the hero.
Thanks to the creation of Disney+, Marvel Studios has been able to expand the MCU in exciting new ways over the last few years. Among the different formats Disney+ introduced to the MCU are the animated I Am Groot shorts that feature Baby Groot's adorable adventures. While I Am Groot's canon status is unclear, the shorts are still exciting enough to check them out, even if they are not part of the MCU's canon. Here are I Am Groot's 10 episodes ranked from worst to best.
10 "Groot Takes a Bath" - Season 1, Episode 4
First up is "Groot Takes a Bath." While there are no bad episodes in the adorable animated series, some are simply less inclined to work for a wider audience than others. "Groot Takes a Bath" might be the most poignant of such cases, following Groot's journey as he finds a mud pit and decides to have a spa day. The discovery that the mud makes leaves grow all over Groot's body leads to the character trying out some new styles before using all the mud from the pit. Groot's rivalry with a squirrel-like creature ends in hilarious fashion, with Baby Groot making a scarf out of the alien's fur.
9 ‘Groot’s First Steps’ - Season 1, Episode 1
"Groot's First Steps" is a formative short in Baby Groot's trajectory, as it features the character breaking out of his pot by accident and finally releasing his legs, becoming more independent throughout the rest of the shorts. After Baby Groot's pot cracks due to his growth, the Guardians of the Galaxy's ship's robotic spheres replace Groot with a Bonsai-like plant, which leaves Groot furious. Baby Groot tries to break the Bonsai, and the two fall to the ground, with Groot's vase breaking and his legs freed. The short's surprise ending, with Groot caring for the Bonsai and sitting next to it to have a snack, is heartfelt.
8 “Are You My Groot?” - Season 2, Episode 1
Though I Am Groot undoes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's big Groot moment, "Are You My Groot?" starts season 2 with a funny and emotional tale. Groot finds an egg in the middle of the jungle, then takes care of the alien bird that hatches from it as his own. The short features Groot getting annoyed by the baby bird's behavior, something that a portion of MCU fans might find relatable. In the end, Groot has an emotional goodbye with his little friend as the baby meets its multiple siblings, and they go away after finding a giant alien bird, their mother.
7 "Groot's Pursuit" - Season 1, Episode 3
"Groot's Pursuit" was an interesting episode of I Am Groot, as it explored a darker theme compared to the rest of the series, with Baby Groot hearing some strange noises in the Guardians' ship at night and investigating to find out what was lurking in the shadows. The episode's big reveal is that the source of the noise is an alien that is made of a water-like substance and takes up Groot's form. The hilarious dance-off that ensues between the two is a great callback to Guardians of the Galaxy, with Baby Groot distracting the alien and launching it off into space.
6 “Groot’s Snow Day” - Season 2, Episode 3
“Groot’s Snow Day” starts off innocent enough, with Groot playing with snowballs and building a snowman. However, Baby Groot's decision to use mechanical parts from the Guardians of the Galaxy's ship in order to finish his snowman ends up backfiring. The episode's change-up from a cozy little Groot adventure to the character having to fight a killer robot snowman is certainly surprising, showing that I Am Groot can feature exciting animated action. Groot also being more preoccupied about the robot snowman destroying his hot cup of coffee rather than his ship is a hilarious touch.
5 “Groot Noses Around” - Season 2, Episode 2
"Groot Noses Around" features Groot getting an alien nose stuck on him while searching for a battery for his gaming control, which allows the hero to finally smell things. Baby Groot going on a journey to see how many different things he could smell, including foods, plants, and more, was quite adorable. However, the episode's kicker comes when Groot goes back to his gaming room, which he now realizes smells terrible. Instead of cleaning up the place, Groot just scrapes off the nose and goes back to playing games with not a care in the world, which is sure to get fans laughing as the credits roll.
4 "The Little Guy" - Season 1, Episode 2
While Baby Groot is incredibly small, "The Little Guy" switches the character's perspective. It's fun to see Groot enjoying feeling so big next to a small alien colony that he discovers under a rock. The I Am Groot episode features exciting action as the tiny aliens try to defeat the giant monster that is terrorizing their civilization — Baby Groot. The episode's ending features one of the series' best twists. A darkly comedic scene sees Groot accidentally step on the tiny alien colony, presumably killing everyone, after he has made peace with the aliens; however, after Groot leaves, it is revealed that the aliens are okay, thankfully.
3 "Groot's Sweet Treat" - Season 2, Episode 4
"Groot's Sweet Treat" features a heartwarming adventure as Baby Groot attempts to get coins so that he can buy ice cream from the colorful ice cream space truck that is passing by the Guardians' ship. There are many moments where Groot's resolve is tested. When he finally gets coins to buy the ice cream, the truck has already sped past his ship. Groot then shockingly flies a smaller vessel directly into the ice cream truck, destroying it and getting a popsicle that looks like Eternals' Arishem. Nova Corps ships then arrive to clean up Baby Groot's mess, questioning the shorts' MCU canon status due to Thanos' destruction of Xandar.
2 "Magnum Opus" - Season 1, Episode 5
While there are many Marvel references in I Am Groot season 1, the series' best is an appearance by Rocket Raccoon. "Magnum Opus" sees Groot wreak havoc aboard the Guardians of the Galaxy's ship as he picks up different items needed for a project, which includes causing an explosion to create glitter. That explosion leads Rocket to Groot's location, and MCU fans get an emotional scene as the bond between the two characters gets explored, with Baby Groot giving Rocket his project, a drawing of the Guardians. Season 1 ends with Rocket praising Groot's drawing, then being saved from falling into a hole caused by another explosion by Groot.
1 “Groot And The Great Prophecy” - Season 2, Episode 5
Finally, I Am Groot season 2 concludes with an incredibly exciting episode that is both funny in the series' traditional way but also breaks new ground. “Groot And The Great Prophecy” features a surprise appearance by Jeffrey Wright's The Watcher before he returns in Marvel's What If...? season 2. Groot continues his usual carefree antics while The Watcher narrates what should be the character fulfilling his role in a prophecy. The episode shows Baby Groot at his best, with The Watcher initially annoyed by the character's disregard for the prophecy before realizing that Baby Groot was following his destiny all along, a perfect ending for I Am Groot season 2.
