Senator Mallory McMorrow

As we rapidly accelerate into the age of digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancements, it’s clear that our youth are bearing the brunt of the harmful consequences. Senator McMorrow discusses the urgent need for Michigan to implement a Silver Alert system to help locate missing seniors with dementia or Alzheimer's. Currently, Michigan's Moselle Senior Alert Act only shares information among law enforcement, not the public, which limits its effectiveness. 27 other states and Washington, DC, have successful Silver Alert systems with high recovery rates, largely due to public involvement. The proposed legislation would allow local police to notify Michigan State Police, who would then issue alerts through the Wireless Emergency Alert System, reaching citizens directly. Senator McMorrow urges immediate action, emphasizing that the necessary technology and framework are already in place and that public alerts can save lives.

Senator McMorrow testimony on Jury Duty Exemptions for Caregivers: Senator McMorrow advocates for a bill that would grant automatic jury duty exemptions to family caregivers of Hospice patients and parents of children with serious health conditions, highlighting the emotional and logistical burdens these families face. They share a personal story of a constituent denied exemption during Hospice care, criticize the current patchwork exemption system, and emphasize the need for clear, uniform procedures. The testimony argues that the legislation would uphold human dignity without weakening the jury system, and calls for committee support.
