Man, Kumamoto just cannot catch a break. I hope the damage to the castle is limited to this section of the wall, given how much they spend to repair the rest of it after the '16 quake.

In France, and the unreliability of the TGV compared to the Shinkansen is staggering. I've taken three journeys so far; every one has experienced a significant delay or cancellation. It's insane that France thinks it can ban domestic flights with a rail network like this.

Matusmae is the last Japanese castle to see sakura every year, but I promise it's worth the trek. The blooming season lasts a long time here (up to a month in some years) and anyway, Matsumae is a charming, beautiful town, with relatively few tourists.
