  • Iconic looks, genuine off-road skills, enough factory hardware options to satisfy all but the most discerning buyers.
  • LOWS
  • Noisy and crude in daily life, meh fuel economy, tows less than the competition.
  • VERDICT
  • Good and bad aside, the Wrangler is the quintessential Jeep, and that's what matters most. If you want one, you likely already know it.

Overview

The line connecting the CJ-2A, the first civilian jeep, to the 2027 Jeep Wrangler is a straight one. Though the Jeep Wrangler has been subject to several rounds of modernization and has seen the addition of a second set of doors and numerous conveniences, its basic DNA remains unchanged: A rugged off-roader with a removable top and take-off doors, and an iconic face recognized around the world.

Powertrain choices include a turbo-four, a V-6, and a beastly V-8, and the Wrangler can be configured with a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic, depending on trim. Its solid axle chassis has been subject to numerous refinements and revisions over the years, but its capability hasn’t suffered a bit; in fact, its current out-of-box competence might be the best yet. Purists will likely have little use for the available heated power-adjustable seats, heated leather steering wheel, and adaptive cruise control, but the addition of hedonistic accouterments only plays into the Wrangler's idiosyncratic charm.

Expert Tip: While the two-door Wrangler is the more iconic shape, the four-door offers more practicality if you plan to daily drive this Jeep.

What's New for 2027

Jeep's Twelve 4 Twelve campaign, which drops a special Jeep model once each month, rolls into 2027 with the Wrangler Sarge leading the offensive. Based on the Willys and Rubicon trims, the Sarge models draw inspiration from the 1941 Willys MB with green accents, vintage badges, and special decals. Four additional special models are set to debut by the end of 2026. Otherwise, the lineup continues with the same wide variety of mechanical and styling options buyers have been choosing from for the last few years.

C/D Expert TipC/D Expert Tip:

If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Engines: 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6, 270-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 470-hp 6.4-liter V-8
  • Transmissions: 6-speed manual, 8-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: four-wheel drive

The standard 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 pairs with a six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed automatic. Should you opt for either the 270-hp turbo four or the 470-hp V-8, the latter transmission is mandatory. Wranglers are born off-road ready, so part-time four-wheel drive is standard across most of the range; a full-time system is available on Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon models and standard on the 392 models.

Although the Wrangler's handling has improved, it's still old school and trucklike in comparison with that of today's more advanced SUVs and pickups. The ride in the four-door is acceptably smooth over rough surfaces, but the shorter-wheelbase two-door has a tendency to buck over the larger bumps.

Car value calculator

What's Your Car Worth?

Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.

0–60-MPH Times

  • C/D 60-mph Tests: 4.0 seconds (392), 6.1 seconds (Sport V-6 manual), 6.5 seconds (Sahara turbo four), 7.1 seconds (Rubicon turbo four)

In Comparison: In testing, our long-term Ford Bronco 4-Door Badlands with the Sasquatch package, 300-hp turbo-four, and seven-speed manual transmission trotted to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. The Wrangler 392 hit the mark in a tidy, un-Wrangler-like 4.0 seconds, and given the Wrangler’s undisciplined steering, it feels even quicker than that.

Towing and Payload Capacity

  • Max Towing: 2000 pounds (two-door), 3500 pounds (four-door), 5000 pounds (392)

In Comparison: With its 6,000-pound tow rating, the Toyota 4Runner puts all but the Wrangler 392 to shame.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Tests: 26 mpg (turbo-four), 13 mpg (V-8)
  • EPA City Ratings: 13-20 mpg
  • EPA Highway Ratings: 16-23 mpg

The two-door Wrangler with the four-cylinder engine earns the best EPA fuel economy estimates of the line, returning 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. Other variants are less efficient, with the worst being the V-8-powered 392, which boasts ratings of just 13 mpg city, 16 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined.

A turbocharged four-cylinder model returned a 26-mpg result on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, 3 mpg better than its EPA rating. In the same test, the V-8-powered 392 returned a dismal 13 mpg. For more information about the Wrangler's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

In Comparison: A four-cylinder Wrangler proved more frugal on our highway fuel economy than the most fuel-efficient Ford Bronco, which came in at 22 mpg. A Toyota 4Runner delivered 21 mpg on that test.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: It's not the most spacious or accommodating SUV, but the Wrangler provides a commanding view of the road or trail. Seated close to the upright windshield, the driver and front-seat passenger face a narrow, squared-off dashboard punctuated by round air vents and chunky switchgear for the climate-control system, power windows, and infotainment.

The view rearward is obscured by thick roof pillars, roll bars, and various grab handles, a problem that goes away by popping the top and removing the doors.

Second Row: Adults won't mind sitting in the back of the four-door model, but they’re liable to complain if consigned to the two-door’s second row.

Cargo Capacity: As an errand runner, the Wrangler offers enough room for groceries and gear, but beware that its rear seats don't fold flush with the cargo floor. As you might expect, there's a significant cargo-hauling trade-off for going with the smaller, classic two-door Wrangler versus the four-door. Fitting just two of our carry-on cases behind the two-door's back seat—versus 10 for the four-door—means packing light if you're adventuring with friends.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • Audio Systems: 8-speaker stereo (standard), 9-speaker Alpine stereo (optional)

The Wrangler’s infotainment system—called Uconnect 5—is easy to use and quick to respond. Owners can also bring up the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto interface on the 12.3-inch touchscreen without a cable connection. Some models also receive onboard navigation with over 3000 mapped trails accessible with a subscription.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Jeep offers only a handful of optional driver-assistance features, but none of the high-tech equipment that we expect to see on vehicles with price tags stretching into the $50,000 range and beyond.

  • Optional Safety Features: blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors

For information about the Wrangler’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Jeep doesn't give Wrangler buyers much to get excited about in terms of warranty coverage. Its policies fall in line with those of its rivals. However, all models do come with two free oil changes and tire rotations.

  • Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: two visits
