Last year Framework Computer launched the Framework Laptop 12 as a convertible, 2-in-1 laptop that was friendly with Linux and upgradeable inline with the beloved Framework Laptop 13 and 16 models. The initial Framework Laptop 12 was nice but the use of an Intel Raptor Lake U SoC in 2025 wasn't all that exciting. Now though Framework Laptop 12 is available with Intel Core 3 "Wildcat Lake" for offering better performance and power efficiency.

The DRM Rust changes targeting the Linux 7.4 merge window have been submitted for pulling into DRM-Next ahead of that cycle kicking off (hopefully) next week. The NVIDIA Nova driver continues leading the way for the development of in-kernel Rust GPU drivers and in the process building out the Rust Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) infrastructure.

With all the recent progress on Mesa's Rusticl driver as a Rust-based OpenCL driver working across the different Mesa Gallium3D hardware drivers, a Phoronix Premium supporter inquired about seeing some fresh benchmarks of this open-source OpenCL solution. Here is a look at how the Mesa 26.3 Rusticl driver is looking against AMD's official OpenCL driver within ROCm 10.

Linus Torvalds "Did What I Preach", Used AI To Make Code Decipherable & Uncovered More Bugs
12 October 06:03 AM EDT - Linux Kernel - assoc_array library - 42 Comments

After using Claude Code to draft code to help make a fundamental improvement to the Linux kernel, Linux creator Linus Torvalds continued using AI this weekend and talking up its benefits. Beyond generating initial patches and a test program for that noted I/O enhancement, he separately talked up using AI/LLMs for making patches more decipherable to understand in the process the AI noted more long-standing bugs within the Linux kernel.

Linux Landing Kernel Workaround For AMD TLBI Erratum #1718
Linux Landing Kernel Workaround For AMD TLBI Erratum #1718
11 October 09:20 AM EDT - AMD - AMD TLBI Erratum #1718 - 10 Comments

AMD TLBI Erratum #1718 was worked around in CPU microcode for addressing a defect in certain Zen CPUs where the Translation Lookaside Buffer Invalidate Instruction use could lead to to stale translation entries. But for those on affected AMD CPUs and not running the updated microcode, a kernel workaround is being introduced with today's Linux 7.3-rc7 kernel and to be back-ported to prior kernel versions.

Rolling Release Distros Superior To LTS Distros In The Patch-Heavy GenAI Era?
10 October 11:27 AM EDT - Operating Systems - Interesting Thoughts - 57 Comments

As some interesting food for thought and weekend forum discussions, this week at the Linux Plumbers Conference in Prague, Qualcomm engineer Khem Raj questioned the relevance of Linux Long Term Support (LTS) distributions in the era of generative AI with the constantly heavy patch flow and bug reports. Khem Raj argued the benefits of rolling release distributions in the GenAI era and the benefits it provides staying up-to-date with mainline.

KNOD Progressing For Linux In-Kernel GPU Offloading For Network Packet Processing
10 October 06:25 AM EDT - Linux Networking - KNOD - 13 Comments

A while back we covered KNOD as an experimental solution for in-kernel network offloading to AMD GPUs. The open-source KNOD project allows leveraging GPUs to handle packet processing in a very performant and energy efficient manner without needing any specialized hardware. KNOD has continued and a development update was shared this week at the Linux Plumbers Conference in Prague.

Ubuntu 26.10 To Include Desktop Images For RISC-V
9 October 01:59 PM EDT - Ubuntu - Ubuntu 26.10 RISC-V Desktop Images - 10 Comments

Ubuntu Linux ISOs for RISC-V 64-bit to date have just been the server/CLI version without any desktop environment pre-seeded. But with next week's Ubuntu 26.10 release, there will now be Ubuntu 26.10 RISC-V desktop ISOs for both Ubuntu proper and a Xubuntu minimal ISO.

Linux Patches Finally Make Hibernation Possible In Secure Boot / Lockdown Mode
9 October 06:27 AM EDT - Linux Kernel - Linux Hibernation + Lockdown - 21 Comments

When booting the Linux kernel using UEFI SecureBoot, the kernel is put in the lockdown mode to restrict the ability to modify the running kernel image or leaking data from kernel memory. Kernel lockdown mode can also be manually enabled by the user/administrator. Among the limitations imposed in Linux's lockdown mode is no hibernation support. But that soon may be relieved with new patches proposed.
