Deathcore veterans Carnifex have entered a reflective but nevertheless brutal artistic period. A tenth full-length album is now on the horizon, and they’re previewing their More Than Misery with the record’s chaos-blasted title track.
A press release confirms that the new track is about being “caught in the pull of poison and a cycle of suffering that feels impossible to break.” That theme manifests through vocalist Scott Ian Lewis’ alternating layers of guttural extremity and bridge-troll screechings. The band generally blast and bound beneath him with max-impact intensity, though they also incorporate some unique slack-guitar sliding.
It’s added that while Lewis’ lyrics in the past had reflected painful experiences he’d been weathering in real time, the forthcoming More Than Misery is the first time he’s written lyrics “after the act of surviving.”
“‘More Than Misery’ is about what happens when suffering becomes more than something you endure, it becomes what changes you,” he says in a statement. “This is Carnifex at our most honest and unapologetically brutal.”
The album, which is Carnifex’s first for Sumerian Records, was recorded in Tennessee with Whitechapel guitarist Zach Householder before being mixed by Jeff Dunne. The 10-song outing is said to mix first-wave deathcore feels with the symphonic elements of more recent Carnifex albums.
The album also includes “Roses & Rotting Corpses,” which Revolver had previously praised as being “a potent bouquet of deathcore putrescence.”
More Than Misery is out November 6th, though a pre-order for the album on exclusive “Yellow, Magenta, & Black” A-Side/B-Side vinyl (limited to 100 copies) is up for sale in Revolver’s shop. You’ll also find more vinyl colorways and CD copies of the album in the shop, too.
