Corky (Anthony Hopkins), a failed magician, adopts a new ventriloquist act with an abrasive dummy named Fats, and suddenly finds himself lined up for a television show. When the unbalanced Corky fears he won't pass the required mental exam, he runs away with Fats to his hometown, where he meets an old love from high school, Peggy (Ann-Margret). Corky persuades Peggy to leave her loveless marriage -- but Fats, who seems to be taking on a mind of his own, doesn't approve of the relationship.

Critics Consensus

Thanks in large part to Anthony Hopkins' layered performance, Magic is an unusual albeit creepily effective experience.

In adapting his own best-seller, William Goldman has opted for an atmospheric thriller, a mood director Richard Attenborough fleshes out to its fullest. Go to Full Review

A hammed-up version of the old chestnut about the ventriloquist who is 'taken over' by his dummy, clumsily adapted by William Goldman from his own novel. Go to Full Review

Magic is neither eerie nor effective. It is, however, very heavy of hand. Go to Full Review

This Richard Attenborough film is less scary than it is sad, about a mentally ill man wrestling with his inner demons and finding them no easier to control when they’re in tangible form. Go to Full Review

It is fun to watch, chiefly because of the deftness and bravura of Anthony Hopkins's brilliantly split personality in the leading role, but... One yearns for the sidelights and starts that Alfred Hitchcock might have brought to this story. Go to Full Review

Simon T @MovieTart 2 days ago Hampered by a funereal pace, a director uncomfortable with the genre, and an oddly robotic central performance, Magic is a missed opportunity. The central conceit is lifted shamelessly by William Goldman from the superior Dead of Night, and what could have been a terrific horror psychodrama instead becomes this tedious and drearily photographed slab of meh. Good supporting performances by Burgess Meredith and Ed Lauter, and a terrific squeezebox score by Jerry Goldsmith. The puppet is ghastly. See more Eric P @eric.ph001 Sep 30, 2026 Too much of a slow burn for me. Couldn’t wait for this movie to end. I do praise Anthony Hopkins’ performance in this one. See more Jason H @RT50328122 Jul 31, 2026 Excellent performance by Anthony Hopkins. Great music score by Jerry Goldsmith, too. See more thiago S @Thiagostone May 17, 2026 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Farah R. @Farah Dec 14, 2025 Before Chucky and Annabelle there was Fats, and thanks to a phenomenal Anthony Hopkins, he’s just as creepy. Magic is a good psychological thriller that effectively keeps you invested in the plot and characters. See more Mitch C @PrimetimeMitch Sep 8, 2025 Anthony Hopkins takes this story on his back and keeps it safe from a disappointment. It's a good idea don't get me wrong and maybe I was naive in thinking maybe - just maybe - Fats might actually be a living entity which would have been both slightly predictable but acceptable at the same time. The doll is sinister - beautifully crafted and for the quality of it, I kind of hoped it might just become real but the story they go with is more down the logical side. Hopkins gives it his all and his deterioration is always present from the moment you realise he voluntarily converses with the object with no intention of professional practice. The worst people in this movie are the protagonists with Ann-Margret's Peggy showing her true colours when you realise her husband is not the ogre he is made out to be. Burgess Meredith is the star of much of this - ironically beginning as somebody you feel may be the unlikeable one and morphing into a caring, sensible sort. It could have ended better. The final scene seemed a bit clunky and unnecessary See more Read all reviews
