IPV impacts people regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. However, Black women are at higher risk for homicide. While Black women make up 14%. of the US population, they are 3x more likely to be killed by a male partner. These disparities are seen across the US.

State IPV-firearm laws reduce IP homicide by firearm by 14% when ROs are combined with orders for the abuser to relinquish firearms. RO firearm prohibitions are associated with a 10% decline in IP homicide by dating partners. #DVAM2025

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was originally enacted in 1994. 32 states & DC further support the VAWA’s aims with additional state legislation that prohibits abusers under final domestic violence restraining orders from possessing or buying a firearm. #DVAM2025

The rate of IPV against women in the US is 56 % higher than in peer countries and US women are 21x more likely to be killed by a firearm than women in other high-income countries. IPV victims are 5x more likely to be killed when their abuser has access to a firearm. #DVAM2025
