deepin-25 (more screenshots in our gallery)
deepin (formerly, Deepin, Linux Deepin, Hiweed GNU/Linux) is a Debian-based distribution (it was Ubuntu-based until version 15 released in late 2015) that aims to provide an elegant, user-friendly and reliable operating system. It does not only include the best the open source world has to offer, but it has also created its own desktop environment called DDE or Deepin Desktop Environment which is based on the Qt 5 toolkit. Deepin focuses much of its attention on intuitive design. Its home-grown applications, like Deepin Software Centre, DMusic and DPlayer are tailored to the average user. Being easy to install and use, deepin can be a good Windows alternative for office and home use.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Deepin is fine "unless" you are installing it alongside Windows or another OS. The option to easily install alongside you find in many other distributions is not available. This means manual intervention, resizing petitions, etc, something I haven't done in a long time. Given the laptop I was installing on was my partners and everything she has on Windows is important and not easily backed up entirely I elected not to take any risks and walk away.

Really Deepin given your modern vibe this is not a small omission. If Mint and others can do it, why not you?

Other than that my experience from USB was snappy and attractive. Setting up wifi was dead easy with the experience reminding me of Apple.

So in short, okay for most users if you are doing a clean whole disk install. For those who are not be prepared to get technical. It is do-able I have done partitioning in the past but like a lot of people if you don't do something regularly knowledge tends to fade somewhat. Yes I could have done it that said but not taking risks with someone else's precious tech. There is room for improvement here.

I'm a pretty big distro-hopper and often find myself craving something new. In trying to find a daily driver for my Samsung Laptop I originally had to settle for arch based for hardware support but with the latest Linux kernels coming with all my laptops hardware supported out the box finally I was free to shop around. I tried many GNOME distros and while very user friendly and perfect for a touchscreen laptop GNOME very quickly used up the unfortunate 8GB of RAM my laptop has.

KDE was snappy but unfortunately isn't quite user friendly on a touch screen without significant tweaking and customizing.

I had tried Deepin years ago with old versions back when it was much more Mac inspired with a dock and top bar. Now it is more Windows 11 inspired and some may prefer that as it feels familiar.

I was worried I would have hardware issues but to my surprise my audio worked, keyboard backlight worked even the fingerprint sensor works and what is more impressive, DDE and Treeland work insanely better on my i5 13th Gen and 8GB of RAM. I never hit my RAM and SWAP limit nearly as easily as something like Manjaro GNOME. Their custom Chromium browser is super light, it has the essentials and no extra pointless stuff that often bloats a browser. Their desktop is pretty and visually appealing while being responsive and animations are quick, apps open instantly and I never feel like my laptop struggles.

There are things that could be improved a lot of features from older iterations of DDE are missing like a notification center, now unless you catch what it was popping up in the corner you have no way to see what the notifcation was. Also auto brightness seems to be missing which was in DDE as far back as Deepin 15. Could do with some more touch features and a few more integrations such as proper Google login for their mail app.

TLDR would be if you have a computer that has a limit on memory like I do (8GB RAM) but don't want to be forced to used xfce or other lightweight DE but often run into issues with GNOME or KDE. Deepin and DDE is a perfect middle ground, you might miss some features in the larger more mature desktops but Deepin is more efficient and optimized and uses a fraction of the resources while still being very visually modern.

If you are a stern anti AI person you might not like the distro, you are never forced to use it and can always keep their AI features turned off but Deepin is definitely trying to copy Windows a little too hard in some areas with their own Copilot like AI.

DEEPIN 25.2 stands out as the most beautiful Linux distribution available today, and it's easily the closest you'll get to a Windows 11 experience without actually using Windows 11. The visual polish is unmatched—every animation, icon, and window transition feels meticulously crafted, rivaling (and often surpassing) the aesthetic refinement you'd expect from a premium commercial OS. Beyond the gorgeous surface, the feature set is remarkably Windows-adjacent: the taskbar, file manager, settings layout, and overall workflow logic will feel instantly familiar to anyone migrating from Windows 11, minimizing the learning curve dramatically. It's the rare Linux distro that doesn't force you to compromise—whether you care about eye candy, usability, or seamless day-to-day productivity, DEEPIN 25.2 delivers on all fronts.
