Loc-OS is a lightweight, Devuan-based Linux distribution with LXDE as the default desktop environment and without the systemd service manager; it uses SysV init to manage the startup and shutdown of services instead. The distribution is designed to be resource-friendly, with low memory consumption and therefore suitable for older or less powerful hardware. The project's goal is to provide a usable and functional desktop experience on older machines while minimizing resource demands.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Installed LOC-OS on old PC with 2GB RAM and it's working well. Definitely would recommend for old PCs and I do like the LXDE desktop it uses and like that this distro is based on Devuan.
Good choice of software it has by default and so far just installed Stacer and Brave browser but I like Librewolf too which was pre-installed and I like any distro that comes with Brave or Librewolf so the user has a browser with ad blocking right out of the box.
I've installed and used so many distros that I now focus on trying distros that offer either of these browsers by default.
LOC-OS is also a good choice for installing on a Chromebook.
More difficult than Linux install on windows PCs but it does work and just do a web search for Mr. Chromebox firmware and tutorials on installing Linux on a Chromebook.
On some Chromebooks you will have to remove the write protection screw after removing bottom of Chromebook.
Since many Chromebooks have very limited storage,I'd recommend installing Stacer or Bleachbit to clear logs and cache so your PC storage doesn't fill up quickly & crash the PC.
Seems hit or miss using terminal commands for this, so Stacer would probably be the easiest for most people.
If you want a lightweight distro, LOC-OS is definitely one to try. Fast, easy to install and user friendly.

Loc-OS Linux: The Ultimate Life Support for Aging PCs
If you are looking to breathe new life into a computer you thought was headed for the landfill, Loc-OS Linux is undoubtedly one of the best lightweight distributions available today.
## Unbeatable Performance on Legacy Hardware
The first thing you notice after installing Loc-OS is its incredible optimization. While other "lightweight" systems have bloated over time, Loc-OS stays true to its core philosophy:
Minimal Footprint: It runs smoothly on machines with extremely limited resources (even those with less than 1 GB of RAM).
Snap-Response Speed: By utilizing desktop environments like LXDE and a carefully curated selection of apps, the system feels incredibly fast.
## Simplicity and User Focus
Unlike other distros that overcomplicate the experience with unnecessary configurations, Loc-OS gets straight to the point:
User-Friendly Installer: The process is intuitive, making it perfect for those who aren't Linux experts.
Zero Bloatware: You won’t find "junk" apps pre-installed—only the essentials needed to start working from minute one.
Debian/antiX Foundation: It inherits the rock-solid stability of Debian, meaning it's a system you can rely on for daily tasks.
## A Vibrant, Supportive Community
One of the biggest assets of Loc-OS is the passion behind it.
Real Support: The community is highly active, providing tutorials and solutions that are easy to follow.
Active Development: This isn't a "dead" project; it receives constant updates and improvements based directly on user feedback.
The Verdict: Loc-OS isn't just an operating system; it’s a technological resurrection tool. It is efficient, stable, and extremely light. If you have an old laptop gathering dust, Loc-OS is the key to making it functional again in 2026.
