Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have adopted the Debian ecosystem I guess by chance, since at the time I had to install an operating system on an HP micro server, and I chose OpenMediaVault because, with agile operation, it offered me what I needed. And as I went into GNU/Linux for desktop, in the derived distros of Debian I stayed. And as in terms of KDE graphical environments is my favorite, currently my preferences are: Tuxedo OS, Quark OS and Kubuntu, since they also give me an easy installation of proprietary nVidia controllers.
I would prefer Debian derivatives as far away from Canonical as possible. But it is not always possible to have everything. I recommend Quark OS without reservation.

Hats off to the Q4OS team!

I originally stumbled upon Q4OS Plasma while searching for a ultra-lightweight daily driver for a relative's laptop with just 4GB of RAM. It blew me away with how smoothly and efficiently it ran right out of the box.

That led me to try their Ubuntu-based sister project, QuarkOS Plasma, on my own laptop. It gives you all the hardware support of Ubuntu, but completely stripped of Snaps and unnecessary clutter.

While I appreciate what Linux Mint tries to do, Cinnamon always felt a bit heavy and bloated with preinstalled apps for my taste. QuarkOS solves this completely through their Desktop Profiler, letting you choose between a minimal, basic, or full desktop right from the start. Add in the guaranteed 5-year security updates, and it's easily one of the most efficient, user-centric distros out there.

Huge props to the developers!

I love this distro, its the fastest fork of Kubuntu 26.04 without forced snaps but still want snaps on demand. And its lighter since its less Ubuntu forced telemetry.

Also I just really want a plasma 6.6 version and other distro is yet to have it (ex. Sparky, MX, Tuxedo). I am so amazed on my workflow with all the updated features of plasma 6.6 as its now my baseline desktop that I require myself I shd have no lower than 6.6 as it has bugs that disrupts my daily use case.

Kinda confused the team is the same with Q4OS but this distro QuarkOS has no website like them.
