What I see in the log is errors from chcon (I am surprised that there
is a chcon in Cygwin). In some places, chcon failures are explicitly
ignored, but in others, they are not. Not sure what the right way to
deal with that is; I lean towards explicitly ignoring such failures
everywhere; can someone confirm or refute this?

All chcon errors are ignored one way or the other. If MASSAGE_EXE is calle=
d=20
in a longer script line, with ($(MASSAGE_EXE $@ || true), otherwise with=20
preceeding - to that line. The latter results in an error message with=20
"(ignored)" afterwards.

I'll change all those to the || true method, which does not list an error.

A successful install however always should end in

=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
Bash users: type 'hash -r' to empty the cache

Indeed, the last one looks as follows:

cd engine && make libgforth-itc OPT=-noll OPTDEFINES= OPTOBJECTS=dblsub.o

At least "make" does not report an error, the chcon still does, e.g.:

if test -z "-ll-reg"; then \
        for i in -ll-reg -noll-reg -ll -noll; do rm gforth${i}; make DOSTRIP=tru
+e optgforth OPT=$i && cp -p gforth${i} gforth-ll-reg && break; done; \
else \

        cp -p engine/gforth-ll-reg gforth-ll-reg && \
        (chcon -t unconfined_execmem_exec_t gforth-ll-reg || true); \
        true; \

A note of reminder, this is not Cygwin, but WSL.

Indeed, the last one looks as follows:

cd engine && make libgforth-itc OPT=3D-noll OPTDEFINES=3D OPTOBJECTS=3Ddbls=

At least "make" does not report an error, the chcon still does, e.g.:

if test -z "-ll-reg"; then \
        for i in -ll-reg -noll-reg -ll -noll; do rm gforth${i}; make DOSTRI=
P=3Dtru
+e optgforth OPT=3D$i && cp -p gforth${i} gforth-ll-reg && break; done; \
else \
        (cd engine && make DOSTRIP=3Dtrue gforth-ll-reg ) && \
        cp -p engine/gforth-ll-reg gforth-ll-reg && \
        (chcon -t unconfined_execmem_exec_t gforth-ll-reg || true); \
        true; \
         make checkone check-nofast ENGINE=3D./engine/gforth-ll-reg; \
fi
make[3]: Entering directory '/home/druffer/gforth/engine'
make[3]: 'gforth-ll-reg' is up to date.
make[3]: Leaving directory '/home/druffer/gforth/engine'
chcon: can't apply partial context to unlabeled file 'gforth-ll-reg'

Under Windows, Gforth's default terminal window has text a bit too small and too dim for my aging eyes. Under a MINGW terminal it runs, but history doesn't work; up-arrow moves the cursor. Does anyone have any sort of solution for Gforth to run under Windows with a terminal window of adjustable font and colors, please? Or even fixed 14pt font in high contrast would do.

I use https://conemu.github.io/ sometimes, but did you not know that you ca=
n change the Cygwin default terminal characteristics? Right click the upper=
 left icon and select options.

Even the standard Windows console window has Defaults and Properties in tha=
t same location.

Under Windows, Gforth's default terminal window has text a bit too small an=

you can try 'mlterm' (<http://mlterm.sourceforge.net/>). I use
'mlterm'
on MacOS, Linux and xBSD. There are Windows binaries on the
webpage.

You can also use Putty as a terminal together with a local telnet
server:

Console 2 <https://github.com/cbucher/console> might also be a

The snapshot distributions come with mintty.exe as terminal. Even Microsoft
understood that their own terminal is crap, and ships mintty with their WSL

Hi gforth community,

I would like to propose the inclusion of the "minimal forth"
source code
from Ulli Hoffmann (https://github.com/uho/minimal) into gforth.

Minimal forth restricts the visible words which helps beginners
when
starting to learn forth. The full wordlist of gforth can be
daunting for
beginners. The minimal forth code allows the user to start with a
very
minimal forth subset and extend the wordlist in a modular fashion.

the code could be in a subdirectory ($GFORTHBASE/minimal) and
maybe a
set of startscripts to start gforth with the minimal code.

Possible?

Greetings

Carsten

So it does, but it's extremely tedious in Win7, being a submenu of the
window menu. I think it might be better in Win10, but my Win10 box
wasn't with me long before it died.

( Perhaps you are already familiar with vocabularies? )

vocabulary minimal

minimal definitions forth

:  + + ;

: - - ;

minimal vlist

( You get the idea. )
( It needs a little more, of course, and there are better ways to do it, )
( but you're most of the way there with built-in stuff. )

One of these days I'll get someone to pay me
to design a language that combines the best of Forth and C.
Then I'll be able to leap wide instruction sets with a single #ifdef,
run faster than a speeding infinite loop with a #define,
and stop all integer size bugs with my bare cast.

yes, and the code I've referenced for inclusion in the gforth
distribution works similar.

The idea is to have this code that creates a minimal forth wordlist
inside gforth shipped with the gforth code, so that it is immediately
usable for Forth beginners.

gforth is powerful. having the minimal forth wordlist code shipped with
gforth would make it easier for beginners to start learning forth with
gforth and staying with gforth while they become masters in forth.

Greetings

Carsten

Ulli Hoffman's code goes out of its way to try and work on any ANS-94
system. I'd think it would be better to do it in gforth-specific code:
it could be shorter and cleaner.

Also it seems to pretend that it's bootstrapping a new system from
scratch instead of just isolating words from an existing system. And
frankly I think that's stupid. If you're doing it for educational
purposes, there's no reason that I can see to define things like:

: + 0 swap - - ;

Why not just alias it to the existing addition word?

>gforth is powerful. having the minimal forth wordlist code shipped with

I don't see that it makes much difference. If you don't tell beginners
about WORDS then they'll never even know. And I don't recall using
WORDS when I was learning Forth, either in minimal systems or in big
ones like gforth, except as a "wow, look at all the stuff that's here"
sort of thing.

Nor do I ever remember making errors where I typed a more advanced Forth
word instead of one frorm the minimal word set by accident.

Racket (a Scheme-like language) does do this sort of limited languages
for teaching purposes, but it has dynamic type checking, and they're
using the limited language to provide better error messages for common
use cases which are valid Racket code but are almost certainly an error
when a beginner writes them. I don't *think* that's the case here. Do
you have examples of common beginner errors which would be better served
by a minimal word set?

Even with Racket, their Beginning Student Language leaves out some
extremely common conveniences and quickly becomes clunky and irritating.
The couple of times that I've tried teaching Racket to beginners they've
gotten frustrated and we've moved right on to the full language.

I'd say introducing words a few at a time is a job for textbooks and
documentation, for instance the gforth tutorial
(http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/forth/gforth/Docs-html/Tutorial.html).

(not that I have anything to do with gforth, but that's my two cents)

I'm happy either way. If someone wants to write better code with the
same or better result, that would be great. If not, the current code is
good already, it does not need to be perfect for the intended use-case.

I'm not proposing making the minimal forth a default, it is just an optio=
n.

Every user is free to choose to use the full gforth system, the minimal
learning subset, or something different.

Providing the option of a minimal learning system in the gforth
distribution will make gforth (and therefor Forth in general) more
accessible.

Greetings

Carsten

Hi,

Is there such a thing as an Append mode when opening a file, so I can keep a=
dding to an existing file when I re-open it? Something like w/a or r/a?

Thanks

Mario Beaulieu

Currently Gforth does not have that. You can use FILE-SIZE and
REPOSITION-FILE after OPEN-FILE to get the same effect (as long as no
other process appends to the file simultaneously).
