About TealliteHide

04813100017271927089798.jpg
Sir Jethro J. H. Teall
Formula:
PbSnS2
Colour:
silvery grey, lead-gray to iron-gray; tarnishes dull or iridescent
Lustre:
Metallic
Hardness:
1½ - 2
Specific Gravity:
6.36
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Name:
Named in honor of Sir Jethro Justinian Harris Teall (5 January 1849, Northleach, United Kingdom – 2 July 1924, London, United Kingdom), geologist and former Director-General of the Geological Survey of Great Britain and Ireland. He was awarded the Wollaston Medal in 1905.
Isostructural with:
Warning: A great many specimens in collections labelled "teallite", especially those from the San Jose mine in Oruro, are really franckeite!
The mineral was originally described from an ore shipment imported to Europe and the original source (type locality) is in some doubt. Some claim Carguaycollo in Potosi Dept., and others think Ichucollo in Oruro Dept. The type specimen (in the British Museum) has no associated minerals with it, so is not much help in differentiating the localities.
