About Maskelynite
Name:
Named in 1872 by Gustav Tschermak in honor of Mervyn Herbert Nevil Story-Maskelyne [September 3, 1823 Wroughton, Wiltshire, England, UK - May 20, 1911 Bass Down, Wiltshire, England, UK], Keeper of Mineralogy at the British Museum (1857-1880) and Professor of Mineralogy at Oxford University (1856-1895). Story-Maskelyne was a systematic mineralogist, crystallographer, gemologist, and meteoriticist. Additionally, Story-Maskelyne was an early associate of Henry Fox Talbot who developed the photo negative method of photography at about the same time that Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre invented the photo positive method (daguerreotype). Story-Maskelyne was elected to the British Parliament and held other offices.
A type of naturally occurring glass having the composition of a plagioclase series feldspar, created by the vitrification of plagioclase by shock melting in meteorites and meteorite impacts.
Originally described from the Shergotty Martian meteorite, Gaya District, Bihar, India.
