Odds and ends - this and that

In an attempt to get caught up on my blogging, I decided to do a this and that post. I have lots of single pictures to blog...so hang on and enjoy the ride.

Roman loves toys that he can do things with us. He likes toys that are "REAL." A few weeks ago he went to a friends house for a play date. When I went to pick him up his friends mom said "Roman really likes microwaves doesn't he? He came in and he complimented me on my microwave and he really liked Ava's play microwave." After he came home he explained that the play microwave "Really worked." Last year for his birthday he got a lawnmower and vacuum. They are a few of his favorite toys because they actually turn on and he likes to help us. When Spencer went out to mow the lawn for the first time this year it was cold and wet. Roman didn't let that stop him. He got his coat, rain boots and had my fill he mower with bubbles and he was off. He even mowed on the diagonal to make it look better with daddy.



Roman is a HUGE University of Utah fan. Not because he really gets into the rivalry. Because we live in Utah. He LOVES anything with Utah on it. He has been begging for a U of U jacket like Spencer and I have. We finally wandered into The Red Zone store and Roman was like a kid in a candy store. He ran through the store pointing to everything screaming "Utah!" There was a big U painted on the floor that he kept diving onto. It was heaven for him. We did find him a Utah jacket. He LOVES it.

We went to the kid/baby expo and they had face painting. Roman looked at the different designs they could paint and he say a U and that was what he wanted! He was so sad when we had to wash it off because it was getting all smeared.


Another favorite of Roman's is Superman. He recently started watching the Superman movies with Spencer. He loves to "fly" around with his cape on. He usually sings the Superman theme song while he's flying around. One afternoon when Spencer got off work he was throwing the boys up in the air with the Superman cape on. I have recently learned how to edit pictures. Spencer said I should post the before/after pictures. So here's the picture of Spencer throwing Roman up in the air.

Schools out for summer

Roman's first day of school I was sad, and Roman was excited. He was so excited to learn, make new friends, and find out what school was all about. I was sad to send my little boy off for several hours a week to be with other people and to see him growing up so quickly.

Roman's last day of school I was sad, and Roman was excited. He was ready for the break, he has been ready for the break for a while. I was sad because now it's all my responsibility to keep him occupied and challenged, think of things to teach him, and help him to continue to learn and grow.

For the last day of school they had a circus day. They were supposed to dress up as a circus performer. Roman didn't decide what he wanted to be until Wednesday (his last day of school was Thursday (June 2) that he wanted to be a magician. So some quick thinking I remembered he had a magicians hat somewhere in all the toys. We searched the basement and found it. He insisted he needed a cape and wand. So we ran to the craft store and found some fabric (he was pretty adamant that he needed a black cape with stars on it...we couldn't find black so we settled for blue) and a dowel for a wand. After he went to bed that night I hurried and bound the edges of his cape and cut and painted the dowel to look like a wand. Roman was so excited when he got up and tried them on. He love them. He even let Hudson try his costume on.




Roman loved his class. He loved his teachers. He has even said that he loves that he has break, and he is excited to go back to school in August.

Baby Butterflies

For Easter Roman got a Butterfly habitat. It came with a card that he could send in for butterfly larvae so he could watch them grow from larvae then watch them form their chrysalises then emerge as butterflies. The little cup with 5 tiny larvae came in the mail and we watched them grow. We rooted for them as we saw them going up to form their chrysalises. We were worried as we saw one of the chrysalises knocked off the top when another was forming its chrysalise. We were sad when one of the butterflies got stuck emerging and died. We really rooted for him, hoping that he would make it out. We decided that we would release the butterflies.

The first one took flight immediately. He flew a bit then stopped on the grass. Roman went to see where he went. He watched it for a few minutes before it flew away. The second was just like the first. Flew a few feet, stopped on a blade of grass then took flight.

The other 2 never flew out of the enclosure. So I picked up the third one because he was sitting on the papertowel that we had on the bottom to try to get it to take off. It kept trying to fly, but it would just flutter like crazy then rest again. He sat on the sidewalk for a few minutes, then he flew a bit and I was able to get him to land on my hand. It was then that I noticed that he was missing one leg. The forth butterfly we were pretty sure wouldn't be able to fly. He got stuck on the watermelon that we put in the habitat for them to eat and his wings got stuck together. After about 30 minutes Roman and I made a decision. We decided to bring the two invalid butterflies back into the enclosure and we kept them.


They are still living in their habitat. The one that is missing a leg tries to fly almost every day (Spencer doesn't understand why he can't fly if he's just missing a leg, you fly with wings, I don't know why he can't fly, but I do know that he can't.) A few days after the release attempt we sent our invalid butterflies to the family petting zoo (Janeene's house) to live with the turtle, fish, birds, dog and whatever other pets they have living at their house right now. Jaren is so good with animals he was so excited to have these butterflies. He called me the night before we gave them to him to see how many there were and what kind they were. I hope the butterflies live a long (for butterflies, they only live 1-3 weeks) happy life in their habitat.

Park day

One Saturday Spencer went golfing with a few of his friends. I didn't want to sit at home alone with the kids on a Saturday. So, we decided to make a day of it and go to a new park. I looked online and found a few new parks that we could maybe check out. The first park that we went to I didn't think to take any pictures. It was Roman's favorite of the three. It was also the furthest from our house. (Probably about 5 miles away.) We stayed there and played for about an hour and a half. We left there to go run a few errands. I promised Roman if he was good on the errands that we could go to another park afterward. He was great on the errands so we went and found another park. It was much smaller then the first but he had a lot of fun there too. We stayed at the second park for another hour then we needed to head home to get some dinner. Roman wanted to keep playing so I promised him that if we went home and ate dinner we could go to the neighborhood park to play afterward.



Roman ate his dinner super fast (which is amazing for him, because he is a major dawdler when it comes to mealtime.) so we went to the park in our neighborhood. We just walked over. I let Hudson out of the stroller and he wasn't sure if I was really giving him permission to get into things at first. As soon as he realized that he could get down and into things he was all about the sand.

Roman decided he wanted to be a dog and dig in the sand.

Hudson couldn't figure out why he kept picking the sand up and it kept slipping between his fingers. He was fascinated by it.

Roman wanted to push the stroller home.


After a fun, crazy, busy, exhausting day at three parks I took two tired, dirty boys home for a bath and bed.

Planet Play x2

In the last few weeks we've gone to Planet Play not once, but twice. before that we had never gone before. We found a few deals on City Deals for vouchers for the buffet and 2 $10 play cards. Because Roman is still 3 we didn't have to play for the buffet for him. The first time we went at 3:00 in the afternoon. We went on a Monday (for FHE) and spent 4 hours there. We had such a great time. We found out after we got there that Mondays were $1 days so all the activities (mini bowling, mini golf, go-karts, bumper cars, laser tag) were only $1. It made the $10 play cards go a lot further. After 4 hours we were TRYING to use them up so we could go home and get the kids to bed.

Two days after we went the first time, there was another deal on City Deals so we decided to buy the deal again and we went a second time, just two weeks later. We went earlier (1:30 pm) and convinced our friends John and Heidi to come with us. They have a little girl named Aubrey that's Roman's friend and they had a lot of fun playing together. We ate lunch then went and played in the play area, rode rides, played in the arcade, played golf, rode go carts, mini golf, more play, more go carts, then dinner and prizes. We were there for 6 hours, the kids had a blast, and once again we were trying to use the rest of our cards. Roman got a sward that he has loved it. Now we need to find another deal so we can go again!

Spencer's birthday presents

Last year and again this year I let Roman choose a birthday present for Spencer. Last year Roman was so proud of the presents that he chose for Spencer (and he thoroughly enjoyed them.) When Spencer opened his present this year he said "You know, they say that dad's buy toys for their kids so they can play with them. I think Roman buys things for me so he can have them." This year Roman bough Spencer 2 water guns. One for Spencer...and one for him. The night Roman and Spencer tried to have their camp out in the yard they had a water fight before their "camp out."




After about 30 minutes, Spencer was done, so he volunteered me to take over for him.


Roman was soaked...Spencer and I were a little wet. More wet from the guns leaking them from Roman spraying us. but he didn't care. He had fun. He loved the presents he chose for daddy.

Soccer Star

Thursday night was Roman's last night of Smart Start Soccer. He LOVED soccer. It was just teaching basic skills. How to pass, dribble, stop, head, and goalie. It was an interactive class, it required parent involvement. When I first signed Roman up, Spencer wasn't sure about it. He wasn't really that excited about it. By the end he was sad that it was over too. It was such a fun time for Roman and Spencer to spend together. They had fun playing together, and Roman was just so happy playing.

A few fun memories....(written by Spencer)

Roman loves to do headers. This is one of the only things that we could consistently do well together.

There were times when I would have to show Roman how to do specific tasks. Whenever I would complete the task Roman would say "good job dad" and then give me two thumbs up. So in order to encourage him i started doing the same thing.

Roman loved playing with his friend Aubrey. They were like too peas in a pod. We would always do the same stations together. And you could always count on Roman telling Aubrey or Aubrey telling Roman to watch them on how to do things the right way.

On another note, Aubrey is probably the fastest 3 year old runner that I have ever seen. When playing various games no other child could catch her. Even when they ganged up on her. It always took one of the instructors to catch her.

Lastly, Roman had a great time and loves the trophy that he got at the end of the class. The night that he got it he wanted to sleep with it. I thought that it would be a little uncomfortable, so we compromised and let it sit on his dresser.

Sleepout

The Weather in Utah has been so bi-polar this year (more so then usual) One week we'll have beautiful weather in the 70's and freezing the next week. Well, one Friday it was finally NICE! REALLY NICE! So Spencer and Roman put the tent up in the backyard to have a sleep out. Roman was so excited. I think maybe a little too excited. We lit him stay up a little later then usual. He stayed up until 8 (because we wanted it to be a little dark when he went out to go to sleep. Then Roman and Daddy went out to the tent with all their pillows, blankets, sleeping bags. I sacrificed and stayed inside with Hudson. I was surprised that I didn't hear from them. Finally around 9 I decided to go outside and take a picture of them sleeping. I thought it would be cute. I was surprised to see Roman's head pop up when I opened the tent door. He was still wide awake.

So I got a few pictures.

Hudson got in the tent with them for a few pictures too.


Hudson and I came back into the house. I got Hudson to bed and settled in to watch a movie. Around 10:00 I heard the back door open. I heard tromping up the stairs, and a very sad little boy going to bed in his bedroom. He was so excited about it all he just couldn't ever get to sleep.

Phone fun

Oh the fun we have with fun frames! I discovered silly overlays and frames on my phone now too. Just in case you wondered what my boys would look like with bushy brows, glasses, big noses and 'staches...you no longer need to wonder.

The Devil is ready for church

Roman loves dressing up. He will find capes, hats, tails, any costume he can fine (or create) whatever lying around and ask us to put them on him. One Sunday morning as we were getting him ready for church he found the devil costume in his room (minus the cape) and decided he needed to wear it. I thought it was ironic that he was dressed as the devil to go to church.

Me - A what?
Roman - A velcro.
Me - You mean a SCARECROW?
Roman - NO! I SAID a velcro.

Roman - Why not? They would keep his legs nice and warm.

We had to run an errand one afternoon. On the way home Hudson was screaming (the whole way home).

Roman - Mom, why is Hudson crying?
Me - I don't know bud, maybe he's hungry.
Roman - What does he want for dinner?
Me - I don't now Roman. We'll find him something when we get home.
Roman - Hudson what do you want for dinner?
Hudson - Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Roman - You want a tantrum for dinner?

Me - Roman what do you think we should get your teachers as an end of school gift?
Roman - (quietly thinking for a minute) Well, they had to throw the cord for the vacuum away because it broke. Maybe would could get them a new one.

Mother's Day

I know, I know, I'm a little late. But I was waiting for my Mother's Day present, but it's been delayed again because of weather.

Spencer asked me several times what I wanted for Mother's Day. Why does "Mother's Day" still put a pit in my stomach? I love it, I hate it, I can't explain it. I thought, and thought, and thought about what I wanted. Finally I told him that what I REALLY wanted was new family pictures. We were supposed to do them today but because of things out of our control (Weather) they will be next Friday instead.

I got a few amazing presents from Roman. I've decided that having Roman old enough to make sweet gifts makes it much more special.

First of all, he made me a bookmark. I have to tell you...about 2 weeks before Mother's day he came home from school and told me "Today at school I made you a picture that has a flower on the front and on the back I wrote I♥U. Did you know that means I love you?"


The morning of Mother's day I woke up and the boys were downstairs with Spencer and there was a note on the bed next to me.


Then, in Primary they had a little watering can with flower seeds on it that they had the kids tell a little about their Mom. The good news is....Roman knows my entire name. He even knows my maiden name. According to Roman my favorite color is Pink. My favorite food is Spaghetti (We had Spaghetti for dinner the night before.) I'm only 10 years old (because that's as high as he could count on his fingers.) My favorite thing to do is play with him. And my favorite thing that he said...My favorite thing to say is "I love you!"
