Hazel Turns 6!

We were in Mesquite at a soccer tournament this year when Hazel had her birthday and turned 6.  She didn't mind because she was with her best friend ever, Skye Jensen.  We were staying with them in St. George.
But we needed to celebrate her birthday properly so the next week I took her and Skye to the Aquarium and then to pick out a cake.  She wanted the Jensen's to come over later that night for cake and ice cream.  It was a fun day.  I sure do love my powerful, funny, hard-working, responsible, beautiful Hazel.
She is awesome!

Elle Wins 1st Place in the Science Fair!

Last night we went to the science fair.  Elle and I worked on her science project a few weeks ago.  We spent HOURS on it.  It was quite a stressful thing actually because I'm the Primary President right now and we were going through our end of the year changes and it was crazy busy.  It was over Christmas break too. We were happy to see it come to an end.
We went last night to see all the other projects.  When I got there, I saw Chanel Watts, another mother, and she told me that she over heard the judges and that Elle had won.  We were going to leave the school early and not even stay for the winners to be announced.  When Chanel told me that, I was shocked!  I didn't tell Elle, I wanted it to be a surprise for her.  So we stayed and sure enough, she took 1st place!  I can't even believe it.  We were not trying to win, we just wanted it to get done.  I'm so proud of Elle and her ability to pull this off.  She procrastinated it until the last few weeks and cried and cried over the stress of it.  But her hard work paid off.  This will be something she remembers for the rest of her life.  It's awesome!

Her experiment was on the sense of smell and sense of taste.  She wanted to know if our sense of smell could overpower our sense of taste.  Which, come to find out, it can.  It was very interesting actually.

The Day I Went to School with Owen

Dear Owen,
If you were drowning, I'd be the first to jump in and save you.
If you ran in front of a car, I'd run right after you and risk my life to save yours.
If you were dying, I'd do everything in my power to keep you alive.
When you're sick, I give up my sleep, so you can have yours.
When you're hungry, I fill your stomach.
When you're sleeping, I make sure you're warm and safe.
When you're crying, I listen.
When your friends abandon you, I am here.
I am always, always, always here.
Because I'm your mom.  Not because I'm your friend.  But because my name holds the most powerful 3 letters combined ever...
M O M.
You're going to forget that, and you're going to think differently throughout your life. You're going to think my name should have four letters.  And that's okay.  I was your age once and I remember thinking I didn't need a mom.  I remember thinking that she cramped my style.  But I see now that friends come and go, some with the changing of seasons, but there is always someone who remains firm in her love and that's a mother.
Dear child, I had to remind you of these things today.  We've had a rough season.  I've noticed that you haven't given your best effort or best behavior at school.  I see the anger, hurt and sadness in your eyes and although I don't know the exact cause, I know that you there is a void and because I love you, I want to to fill it.  An interesting thing happened today.  I want you to remember this because one day you will be a parent and you will want to see your children succeed and you will do everything within your power to help them.  You can tell them this story one day...
I came to school with you today.  I followed you around to all of your different classes.  You were mortified.  You hated me.  You stuck your tongue out at me with every opportunity.  You tried to ditch me.  You ignored me.  You glared at me.  I was your worst enemy today.  But I warned you that I would come and spend the day with you if you didn't stay caught up in school and if you continued to be disruptive.  I warned and now I had to follow through.  I know that being in the Fourth Grade and having your mom follow you around isn't the most popular or ideal thing for you.  Trust me, it isn't ideal for me either.  It took a village to pull this off today.  Trying to find carpools for your siblings, alternating babysitters throughout the day, waking up at 5:30 to pack lunches for the whole family, including myself, and then picking everyone up from a different house after school.  We had to ask help from 6 different families today so that I could come spend the day with you.
Remember when I said that if you were drowning, I'd come save you?  Well that's what I did today.
I had the chance to see what you experience at school, who your friends are and what needs improving.  It was amazing to see your day through your eyes.  You know what?  I have empathy for you now.  I came home exhausted, hungry and in need of a break.  I can see why it's easy to come home and be ornery.  I get it.  I have compassion.  I also learned that you are incredibly smart.  I was so proud.  I thought I would have a long list of scoldings to go through with you, but I feel the opposite.  I think you are amazing.   I think you are talented and gifted.  I'm so proud to be your mom.
Once we were done at school, we took some time to chat in the car about the day.  You told me that it actually wasn't so bad having me there.  You were still embarrassed because you didn't know what your friends would say or think of me being there, so I reassured you that they would probably make fun of you for having your mom there to sit with you all day.  But deep down, they all will know that your mom cares.  That you are loved.
You know what happened tonight?  You were the happiest I've seen you in a long time.  You were laughing and cracking jokes with me.  You wanted to be with me.  I believe it's because you trust me now.  You trust that I will do what I say I'll do.  You trust that I will give you boundaries and I will enforce them.  You felt secure tonight.  You felt loved.  The kind of love that comes from a parent.  It's a priceless, unconditional love.  I think you finally understood that I really will pull you from a burning building.  So, we came full circle today and I reminded myself of a valuable lesson. I am your mom.  I am not your friend.  You will hate me some days, but you will know that I always have your back.
Tonight you came up and twirled my hair and laid your head on my shoulder and were calm.  You didn't stick your tongue out at me.  You didn't tell me you hate me.  You told me you loved me.  And now my heart is full.

I love being your mother,
MOM

Finn Turns One!

Elle's Biography Project

Elle chose to do her biography project at the end of 3rd Grade on Nadia Comaneci.  It was a wax museum project.  She was great!

Tiblefork Lake

We took a field trip to the lake and went rock hunting.  It was fun! Finn is in love with rocks.  Hazel loves adventure and this is where Owen perfected skipping rocks.  He was so proud!  Elle gathered the rocks she needed for her science project at school.
