'Tis the Season ...

Caricatures

To be turned into a cartoon character! Because seriously, animation has ALL the fun during the holiday season. I mean, if you aren't saving Christmas, guiding Santa, or just otherwise making the planet safe for candy canes, abonimable snowmen, and elves who really want to be dentists then what are you doing with your life?

Mike's employer hosted a fantabulous Christmas Party this weekend. There were clowns, magicians, minstrels and Santa - oh my! There was also ... drumroll please ... a caricaturist (word?) Oh how I love them! I have wanted one of these of my kids for just a stitch past FOREVER. I've only seen them at amusement parks, however, and the children never showed the slightest bit of amusement when I suggested they sit still in the blazing hot sun to have them made.

Until now. I am going to use caricatures for EVERYTHING. Seriously, in my caricature I will be thin, and 20 years old ... for the children the look is a LOT more realistic!

Merry Christmas!

Happy Thanksgiving!

May everyone's holiday be safe, happy, and stress-free. May your turkey be moist and your rolls be plentiful. And may you remember that there is such a thing as photographic abuse. When people say "you take such great photos" I always beam. The truth, however, is that if you take 300 shots of anything - there are bound to be some keepers. For these and approximately 298 more from our annual "Fall Photo Shoot" feel free to slog through my photostream (link at right).

Freedom smells a lot like ... pie

I-voted I pity the people who cast absentee ballots. Our polling place is a local church. We vote, catch up with neighbors, browse the bake sale and annual bazaar, and come away the better for it. Today I scored some vintage Tupperware, an antique(ish) cider bottle, and a fantastic cherry crumb.

For me, democracy is an enjoyable part of small town life. And Freedom smells a lot like pie.

One minute ...

One minute they are scoring goals for the OTHER team and getting tangled in the nets (we love you MegMo!) and the next they are playing like they're getting paid! First game of the 2008 season and Matthew's team won in a hotly contested 3-2 score. For the record, he scored ALL THREE GOALS. Oh yeah, we were just a teensy bit proud :) If only because after playing myself over the winter I know without a doubt that I could never do that. Period.

It's humbling to realize I could not do what my 'baby' does.

Matthew is #7.

Yet more proof that Kassie is about 1,000 times cooler than I could ever hope to be. At her age, I wouldn't have picked up a bullfrog on a dare. Here she and Donna are showing off their mad frog whispering skills. I think sticking her tongue out like a frog on the hunt for a big juicy fly shows an amazing amount of frog empathy don't you?

The Great Pom-Pom War of 2008

Sometimes it still astounds me to realize my 'baby' is growing into a person with her own sense of self.

Yesterday at pee-wee cheer they handed out pom-poms to all the girls to use for the season. Kassie was handed a one of the rare and highly coveted "new" pairs (as opposed, apparently, to those used pom-poms that are so devalued the moment you drive them off the lot).

During the course of the practice the girls were instructed to set the pom-poms down, get a drink, whatever. When they did so, a new and not-altogether-pleasant girl made an obvious grab to take Kassie's new pom-poms for her own and leave her more tattered set behind. I suggested this was an oversight, mistakes happen, Kassie assured me that was not the case at all.

Of course Kassie, having been told by her parents to always handle things in a fair and kind manner and the world will treat you well (ie. having been sold a load of goods) was heard to say "oh hey, those are mine could I have them back?"

To which the pom-snatcher replied "they're all the same it doesn't matter" in what was described as "a really mean way mommy."

Kassie countered with "well if it doesn't MATTER then can I have them BACK please?"

To no avail. This chick was keeping the new pom-poms. Oh sadness. (This by the way made Kassie cry when she got in the car because she couldn't believe that someone could be so mean).

I had a talk with Kassie on the way home about how if the girl was willing to basically steal to get them then she must want them pretty badly and they must mean a lot to her and we should just forgive her because honestly, it's pom-poms. And that really, this was a big old homely girl so we should let her have the pom-poms. Okay I'm making that last part up - I only thought it, didn't say a word of it to Kassie. I want her to be a better person than I am. There is still hope for her.

We are not, of course, a forgiving and forgetting sort of people. We are a grudge holding watch your back kind of people. Still, I try.

So today with no fanfare the girls went back to practice. It was noted early in the practice that pom-snatcher was careful to never set her ill-gotten-poms down for even a nano-second (which appears to mean she knew she was vulnerable to a sneak pom retrieval attack).

Finally, she could no longer cart them to every break and tuck them under her arm during non-pom routines. Although it was fun as he#$ to see her try.

We do not know how or when (I don't stay for practice) but two board members who stay to monitor practice informed me when I came to pick her up that the next thing they knew Kassie had the new poms back in her possession. When asked on the sly "did you get 'em back?" by one of the adults she gave what they describe as the most covert half-nod of "oh you KNOW I did" they'd ever seen on a 9 year old.

At the close of practice as we parents sat on the sidelines waiting to retrieve the girls, all the girls were again ordered to leave their pom-poms where they lay and join for a circle dance. The entire time this fun team building event was going on, both girls shot looks at the coveted poms sparkling in the sun. It was clear they could focus on nothing else.

We were all chuckling "this is going to be good" wondering which girl would get them. To be my normal mean spirited self, the other child is a big girl and no I don't mean tall. I mean biiiiigggg. Square-ish. I think she could take Mike in a fight. She does not look to be built for speed. Kassie started soccer practice last night. She's known for being fast. At the risk of sounding like a preening parent - my money was on Kassie. Unless they were going to arm-wrestle for them and then that other girl had the edge.

We don't know how or when but we literally turned away from the field for a second to greet another mother and turning back saw that the pom-poms were gone! Oh the horror! Never fear ... here comes Kassie, already halfway across the field, pom-poms scooped up, and striding toward us with the thrill of victory apparent in her step.

The other girl marched right up to one of the coaches to whine "Kassie took my pom-poms!" to which the coach, aware of what had happened yesterday, said without a hint or irony "oh but it doesn't matter, They're ALL THE SAME aren't they?"

Moral of this story? You do NOT mess with a soccer player's pom-poms. She'll beat you to 'em every single time.

(Honestly, I think the old pom-poms are fluffier and cuter anyway but I think that is probably beside the point).

Off we go ...

Well we are off to the Ohm-home for two days of sun and fun, now that the refrigerator has been repaired (which necessitated us getting a much later start). This is because I'm a big Baby Princess who just HAS to have cold and/or frozen food as required. No thawed out squishy meat for me, thank you very much. So one defrost timer later ($79.95 which I thought was very reasonable for cold and/or frozen food, all things considered) we can now actually leave and know that our ice cream won't morph into something else entirely while we are gone.

The Ohm-home is located in Huron, Ohio. This is the home of Jodi and Tracey Ohm who we've known since our playgroup days here in Columbiana when the children were just wee little. The Ohms have lived a little bit of everywhere since we've known them. Sometimes for as little as six months at a time. They are kind of like a military family only they serve Coca-Cola instead of Uncle Sam. The Ohm's moving back to Huron was a red letter day for us because they had previously lived in Indiana which is quite a jaunt. We were against that. They had previously lived in Rootstown which worked out really well for me, but as it turns out it is not all about me, they chose to live in Huron this time instead. Okay whatever. I still love them. (Hi Jodi and Tracey!)

So ... they have now moved back and moved into the Ohm Estate which is the most gorgeous house. Now, we have a lovely home, you all reading this have lovely homes. I think we all live quite comfortably and with style. None of us is living in a box under a bridge.Yet, I will confess that the Ohm home is one of those that no matter how much you liked your house when you left, when you get to the Ohms, you decide that you do, in fact, live in a hovel. It's lovely and we hope to have a fun and relaxing time.

We're going to Lake Erie to swim so mostly I'll hyperventilate about riptide (does Lake Erie have a riptide?) and worry about spf.

P.S. I added a link to Dawn's photos on the right under family and friends. Until she makes me stop! :)

flickr 101

It has come to my attention that flickr isn't always intuitive at a glance. So for your viewing pleasure here is a short primer on how best to view flickr.

Upon opening a flickr blog you can see the available photo albums (sets) on the right. That's easy-peasy.

Then you click on them and see the opening screen, you will then click on the first image at top left and click on it.

Once you see each individual page you simply click on the image indicated and just keep clicking to advance each image.

Oh Canada, Eh?

Photos on Flickr at right (now in their own separate Niagara-licious album!) *Be sure to check out Dawn's reprisal of the Uncomfortably Tight Mining Helmet incident of 2006 on the Maid of the Mist; Adam as Sonny Crocket, tasteful tourist attire, and so much more!

* The helmet and Dawn is a reference to the 2006 trip when we went into the underground mine and she got a tad overzealous in tightening on her hardhat and actually made a divot in her forehead. :)

Kassie cried when we had to leave Canada. I think she may be considering becoming an ex-patriot.

He thinks he's teaching me a lesson when he acts all reluctant to be photographed. Sure pal, whatever. In reality, I'm so glad to be avoiding the "say cheese" smiles. I think he looks more "don't hate me because I'm an A&F Model" this way anyway.

But, oh if he asks, he's totally driving me nuts with this look.

Party 'til the Bears (and the Ohms) Come Home ...

Ashlyn's BAB Birthday Bash 2008. Ashlyn and Kassie have been BFFs since they were about a year old. They share a bond that goes way back even though they are polar opposites in many ways. Kassie is girlie in the traditional sense in that she likes dolls, lipgloss, glitter and dress-up. Ashlyn Rose is a girlie girl in the way in which we actually believe she may, in fact, be made of lipgloss, glitter, and dressing-up. Ashlyn's had a better knack for accessorizing than me since she was barely in preschool. Bless her glittery little heart. We love her bunches and hope her birthday was the best ever! We're also glad they moved back to Ohio because being apart is un-bearable. Yeah. I said it.

Just Jack ...

... is Just Darling!

Dawn and Leo Fertig and family announce the addition of the newest Fertig - Jack! Jack joins a brother, Buster, and disgruntled feline sibling, Simba, at home. (As Dawn said "Buster loves him and they play well together but I haven't seen my cat in days ...")

I'm sure Buster loves this new addition, but wonder if he's secretly saying "look pal, you may have youth and cute on your side but anything you can do, I can do with one leg tied behind my back (or, in this case, missing)"

Obviously Jack gets his coloring from Kayla. Welcome Jack! You are one lucky dog.

Kassie cleaned up at the 3rd Grade Track and Field Day yesterday. She's the second fastest child in her grade (second only to Brandon who beat her by less than a second) - and definitely the fastest girl. We're not proud or anything.

The eyes have it

Just in case one of you might have somehow missed my ceaseless badgering and managed to not go immediately and check out the pics from Dawn's big surprise bash - I am entering this one here because it moves me every single time I see it.

Of course *all* the children in the family are special and gorgeous and gifted, naturally. Madison's eyes, however, are the stuff poets write songs about (or something lyrical like that). Of course I can hear my mom now, chuckling and pointing out (hi mom!) that we shouldn't all act so darned suprised that Madison looks like that since her parents are both gorgeous too. It's true. They always look to me like they should be advertising something (I'd buy whatever it was based on their looks alone!) It's funny to have their family photos displayed around the house. People say "nice frame but when are you going to replace the photo that came with it with someone you know?" to which I have to insist (yet again) that yes they are real people and no, I am not indulging in that fantasy where the people in the Gap ad are related to me. Super cool party pics ...

Dsc09460_087 Super Cool Surprise Party Pics are currently up and waiting. Click the link to flickr (at right) to view and you should all be able to read photo notes and download any images you want right from here - easy as pie!

Had a fantastic time at the party when I wasn't being moved to tears by something or other (darn you all for being so fabulous!) I was all about keeping it in check until Leo's toast. He should really have to warn a girl!

Love you all and if anyone has more pics I'd love to have 'em if you could e-mail them I'll put them in.

P.S. Anyone wanting prints from the Flickr listings: simply click "all sizes" above the photo and you'll see the "full resolution image" and a link to "dowload large photo." You can then save it in a folder of your choosing on your harddrive, disc, whatever and have prints, use as your screensaver, whatever makes you happy. Hope that helps!

P.S. part 2: There's an orb in there just for you Peg!

***REMEMBER: The medium sized pics you see all on the screen together are only thumbnails. Click on one to open it "large" and then you'll see a spot on the right where you can click to go to the next full-size pic (or previous) and so on. It's all very exciting I tell you. Truly awesome. For those loved ones on a dial-up connection I'm so sorry. You'll probably want to go get a cup of coffee or something, then come back.
