Quaranthoughts

Do you think the quarantine will bring back blogging circa 2009 and then the 2014 revival? I don't think so, either. We've got Instagram now.

Did my inability to focus on finishing my master's thesis bring this global crisis upon us? Now finishing the thesis is like...the only thing I can do.

Not true...I have a big, fun to-do and to-read list waiting for me.

Considering starting "Killing Eve" during these times.

Have discovered the immensely soothing and relaxing activity of ~taking a bath~ who am i

And I'm going to finish writing this thesis today before I go to sleep. It's super taking its toll on me.

More interesting posts might be coming, maybe.

grad school: what's in my backpack

+ One subject notebooks, spiral bound, college ruled. The kind that you can get for 17 cents or cheaper during school shopping. I always buy about five every September because I can't help myself. I use one per class, both for in-class notetaking and outside-class notetaking from readings or working through assignments. I keep all notebooks for all classes inside my backpack, even if I don't have that particular class on that day.

+ Pens! And backup pens! My preferred are the PaperMate InkJoy1.0mm medium point tip in black. They write sooooo smoothly. I buy them in the pack of 20 either from the store or Amazon, again on sale during school shopping szn. However, in a pinch, any pen in blue or black in will do. For example, today I found a pen from the Excaliber hotel/casino in my backpack (???????), so that's something.

+ Laptop, charger, obviously.

+ Planner. I got a new planner for the school year and it's OK, not my favorite. I think my favorite is bullet journaling because I can make the layout exactly how I want, this one is fine.

+ Reading glasses, bc grad school has been murder on my eyes.

+ A snack-size Ziploc bag with Tylenol and Ibuprofin in.

+ Textbook: "Social Media for Strategic Communication"—this is the textbook I assign for my class

+ Five different lipsticks: Revlon "Fire & Ice"; L'Oreal "Doesn't MATTE-r"; L'Oreal "Plum Explosion"; Revlon "Plumalicious" (MY VERY FAVE EVERYDAY LIPSTICK); NYX "Siren"

+ Burt's Bees Peppermint Lip Balm

+ A flash drive I've never used

+ Floss

+ Tweezers

+ Five minty LifeSavers, Wintergreen flavor, aka the only acceptable flavor. I'm a chainsmoker except with these...just one right after another, constantly, all day. I keep the Costco bag of them in my desk at work, and refill my backpack as needed.

+ A pack of tissues

+ A swag pair of sunglasses (???)

+ My work lanyard

+ My wallet

grad school update

To make more money and to stick it to my haters. That's the reason I (somewhat) facetiously gave during first-day-of-class introductions all throughout grad school.

Grad school. Still, even now in my final semester, it still feels a bit weird and a bit like I'm getting away with something when I say that I'm in grad school. I'm truly the last person in the world that I thought would go to grad school, yet here I am, with just a little over two months to go until graduation and a hooded robe with my name on it (p.s. should i get my name stitched on my robe??).

But yes, this is the main reason why I had 17 blog posts to my name in 2019, why I haven't really done—what's the phrase? Social activities?—in what feels like actual years, and also why my eyes are slowly getting ruined. Grad school. I'm nearly done and it's the final slog to the end.

I'm currently enrolled in one course—a Program Evaluation course—and I'm teaching a course, which is counting as my final elective. I absolutely love love love teaching at the university level...JOKE'S ON EVERYONE WHO KNEW ME AS AN UNDERGRAD I guess.

And then, there's this thesis. It's basically the bane of my existence and consumes all my waking thoughts. In just a few very short weeks I know it will be finished, but the doing of it, WOWIE it is no joke.

But, this is all to say, I'm nearly finished with grad school. I'm working hard and overall, I'm really proud of myself. It's a GRIND right now, but I have great support and help.

And I've got a plane ticket to Australia to use the day after graduation.

Fin.

Spring in Santa Fe: El Rey Court

To celebrate Justin's graduation and our 5th anniversary + kick off the summer, we did something similar to our visit to Durango, Colorado last summer and explored a new city in an adjacent state. We decided on Sante Fe because of the 1. plentiful opportunities to golf; 2. most museums per capita in the US; 3. we LOVE Mexican food; 4. we're hardcore desert people; 5. it seemed awesome (which it was!)

I'll do more posts about the city, which we loved, but I first want to show you where we stayed! I found this gem on Expedia and lo, and behold, it's a millennial influencer's dream (I'm absolutely not claiming to be a millennial influencer). El Rey Court is an old motor court motel from the midcentury that has been fixed up and designed thematically and beautifully, and has a bar and live music and local makers markets. It's a great little place to stay and we absolutely are on the prowl for a motor court in Utah to model after this awesome place. PLUS after we've stayed there, I've seen it profiled in a lot of different places, including the most recent issue of Domino. It's also been profiled in the New York Times. When we come back to Santa Fe, we will definitely stay here again bc I'm dying to get at the pool (which was closed when we were there bc too early still), but we went to the hot tub at least once a day each day we were there.

Ok, so here's our stay at El Rey:
