Crucified

This reworked image from a shoot some time ago is of a model named Marski. The negative was rescanned and the image was processed in Photoshop to create the Orton Effect, mentioned in other posts to this blog over the last view months. For details about creating the Orton Effect, follow the key word links to the Orton Effect to find the first post regarding its use.

Alex Orton
Another image of Alex W, this one edited in Photoshop with the Orton effect. This is the first time I have tried this on a black and white image. It struck me the other day that applying this effect on a black and white image might approximate some of the work I have been doing with infrared film. It does create some of the softness and the glow of the IR film, but the effect is still somewhat different. In some ways it is more interesting, but not enough for me to put away the IR film just yet.

Derick Orton

Several months ago I wrote about the Orton effect -- achieved in film by sandwiching two slides together, one slightly out of focus and over exposed -- and recreating this effect digitally.
The image to the left is another example of this technique applied to an image of Derick from last week's shoot.

The Orton Effect

This image is an example of the Orton effect. To make this style of image one can either shoot two frames of the same subject using a tripod, one in focus and one out of focus, and then sandwich them together OR using image editing software you can create this effect by creating two layers the image and applying a Gaussian Blur effect on one of the layers.
Orton effect images have a romantic glow, as though shot through cheese cloth.
