Lately, I’ve seen so many of my fellow costumers and cosplayers post about the ambitions and cosplay plans for the year. And while I too, would normally be doing this (I’m so organised and nerdy I have a spreadsheet) this year I’m taking a step back from planning too much.
Generally my approach to costuming is to look at what events I’m hoping to attend throughout the year and decide where I will be re-wearing costumes and where I will be making new costumes. And then I put together my list of costumes that I will be making and start hunting down supplies. But, as a woman and it being my prerogative to change my mind, I have in fact put aside a lot of costumes that I had planned and purchased supplies for in favour of something else which fits in with the event in some other way. What this means is that I have a huge fabric and supplies stash and I blow through too much of my cosplay budget too fast.
So this year, things are going to change. And so far, I like it!
My intention is to rather work on a project as I’m inspired to. As I mentioned In previous posts, I do have at least one long-term costume in the mix that I am always working on but it’s nice to be able to still put together smaller projects throughout the year.
What spurred this was one of my projects last year. I made a new 1870s bustle dress. There was no real plan to wear it to any particular event (there was one I could wear it to but I have others in my wardrobe that I could wear instead), but I just wanted to work on it because I had cut it out and wanted it made up. But what it meant was that I could take my time. I wasn’t stressed about a deadline and rushing things to get it done in time. In fact, I took it one step further than I had planned and made a dust ruffle for the trained skirts. It also meant that as I didn’t like one of the fabrics I had originally chosen, I had time to find something else that would go with it better.
I’m at the stage with my costuming where I pretty much have something already in my wardrobe that I could wear. In fact, I’ve already sold a number of costumes that I no longer wear on my etsy store and I do have some inklings to sell more of them. This means that if I want to go to something, I just choose one already done, iron it, dig out the props and wigs and put it on.
It doesn’t mean that I’m taking a break from costuming. Far from it. At the moment, aside from working on my long-term historically accurate Ariel, I’m also working on sprucing up my Pin-up Elsa. And I will wear it when an opportunity presents itself. Let’s face it, there are plenty of conventions nearby that I can wear it to, so there’s not really a worry that it won’t ever be worn. And of course, there are always opportunities to do photoshoots as well.
One of the other things this means is that as I won’t be stressing about timelines for projects, I can spend a little more time on some of my other hobbies (cross-stitch, learning different embroidery, learning crochet) and I will have the time to blog a little more. Heck any more than last year will be a win.
So, to the future! New costumes and reducing my stash.

Lots on the books
I’ve been a busy little bee of late. It hasn’t shown much in the lack of costume events that I have attended (which is odd for me at this time of year), but I have been sewing up a storm and shopping up supplies for some of my upcoming projects for the remainder of the year. There is quite the number of costumes planned:
And then if I get time and haven’t shot myself beyond that, I’d like to try and make a historical swimming costume and finish my Princess Leia before the new Star Wars movie airs in December. Just so that I can show up in costume.
At the moment though, I’m focusing on the pirate and the ballgown. I can’t work out who’s stupid idea it was to sew 8 metres of trim in designs on the pirate jacket. One of those “oh this will look wonderful” moments followed by lots of cursing and neck cramping when you actually try to get it done in a timely fashion. Thankfully I don’t have much left to do on the jacket and I don’t need the pirate and ballgown finished until the end of August. I do like to stay ahead when I can though. And as soon as they are finished, it’s onto the next one.
And in all this time, I am going to be working hard to trim up a bit for the summer cosplay run of costumes. I’ll be wearing my Jeannie costume in November and stomach baring costumes require sit-ups so that you see more ab and less flab, and yet here I am sitting down with a can of coke. Go me!

What's on my plate
Gosh, it has been a long darn time since I did any sort of update that didn’t involve my attendance at an event. It’s been quite quiet for me costume-wise this month. Which is a good thing really, because I believe I just about burnt myself out at the beginning of the year. With all the time available to sew, I did, and it has taken me quite some time to get back into the correct balance of work / relax / costuming. At any rate, I have enjoyed the last few free weekends and have tried to make use of my time whipping up some regular work clothing and getting ahead on my next projects.
In terms of my work clothing, I drafted up a couple of skirt patterns recently. I have a plethora of t-shirts (mainly from tee-fury) in my wardrobe and the fact that I have a lot of dresses, means I just don’t wear them. Coming into summer, the heat has already begun and a t-skirt and skirt is quite a cool option for the day. My favourite of the patterns is a 6 gore flared skirt that I have made two skirt from – a Tinkerbell skirt, and a Van Gough Starry Starry Night skirt. I even added some wonderful pockets in the front so that I have somewhere to stash my phone. The second pattern – a wrap skirt. I whipped it up in red butterfly cotton and a circus print cotton. My mum loved the style so much that she asked me to draft up a pattern in her size as well, and she already has two skirts made up. A success on all fronts. And I have more fabric just waiting to be made into skirts. The best thing, they are really quick to make and only take a couple of hours to complete.
But I know that most of my followers are more interested in the costuming side of things. And the remainder of the year isn’t set to ease up too much for me. So, what’s coming up:
Supanova November 8 – 10
This year, Supanova have scored a few Game of Thrones actors for Brisbane, so my brother and I have decided to go with it and dress up. I am making him a Lord Varys costume and myself a Margaery Tyrell costume. I also have plans to fix up my Sansa costume to wear.
Costumes – Sansa Stark, Margaery Tyrell, potentially Ariel (have yet to decide 100%)
Queensland Museum Exhibition – Treasures from Afghanistan November 24
1920s. The ACG are making another trip to the thankfully air-conditioned museum. I would love to make a new 1920s dress from a piece of fabric in my stash (silk cotton), but if time runs out, I will simply re-wear.
RIFF Christmas Party November 30
At this stage, it looks like another Ancients event for my re-enactment group. I’m planning to drag out the Minoan outfit. After all the work I put into making the thing, I want to wear it again.
ACG Christmas Party December 8
Tis the season. This one is an open theme event (I like to keep our Christmas parties simple), so I have yet to decide what I will wear. Something not too stifling though, because if it is hot now, it’s going to be worse then.
Proclamation Day December 10
Each year, the ACG attend the celebration of the date when Queensland became our own state in 1850s attire. This year is set to be no different. So the crinoline will come out again.
New Year’s Eve December 31

Six Months Ahead
Since I started working full time again, I have discovered a distinct lack of energy of an evening. So much so that I really don’t get a whole lot done during the week anymore. I suppose it doesn’t help that I have been sick, but I really need to get into the motivation thing and start cracking on some work. With that in mind, I thought it was high time for my six monthly planning post. I warn you, there is a whole lot coming up and a good amount of it, I need to be sewing for.

There’s a whole lot of planned sewing going on there, so I will need to get cracking ASAP. The main one I need to focus on is my ACG Ball costume – The Historical Disney Princess, Ariel. I am planning to enter the parade, but what I do will depend on me getting my costume completed. At least I have a backup plan. So far, the patterns have arrived and I have all of my materials, trims, wig. The best part is that I am using a roll of fabric from my stash for the bulk of the costume. So this week, I am starting the pattern drafting. Then I simply need to mock it up, make any adjustments and then get onto the real thing. The part that worries me the most is the trimming detail that I am planning to put into the gown. Handsewing will be plentiful.

Progress Ahoy!
Now, you would think, given that I have a
new job and less time to spend on sewing that I would now be winding down for
the year and cutting back on my projects. You would be wrong. Obviously, I
don’t have much sense. I have a lot of events and plans for the rest of 2013.
Some have changed a little due to
the lack of extra sewing time, but I do have a full six months ahead of me.
To start off with, this coming weekend, I
am travelling down to Sydney to attend Supanova with my girls. And of course,
that means, costumes. Three to be exact. I’m starting the weekend with Tsumugi
from the Anime K-ON. Next up is Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones, which I am
still finishing off, but thankfully it is just the wig and accessories to go.
Finally I will round out my weekend with Vanellope Von Schweetz from Wreck it
Ralph.
The next thing on the agenda is to finish
preparing for the Abbey Medieval Festival. This year, I will be attending as a
member of RIFF and re-enacting in a 15th Century Village. Thankfully, I am able
to wear my Burgundian ensemble that I made a couple of years ago, I just need a
few extra bits. I bought a couple pair of shoes, so I have those. And I have
cut out fabric for a couple of other bits – a new red linen kirtle, and a white
linen shift. I will also be striving to get a hennen (hat) and veil made as
well as hose. The timeframe is tight, so I will have to see how I go. But, at
least I already have my fabric ready to go. I will have 12 days once I get back
from Sydney to get cracking on it all.

Supa-plans
I've been very busy lately, thus the lack of posting. On a personal level, I have been writing an abundance of job applications. After I was made redundant last year, I took some time off for a break and to go on a trip to Japan. Since I got back, I have been on the hunt again. On top of that, I have been trying to get my business up and running more thoroughly.
In the meantime, I have become a sewing madwoman. Namely, I have been trying to get ready for Supanova, which is on this coming weekend. I have been trying to put together 3 new costumes.
The first, a Stargate Flightsuit, was a simple purchase and ironing project.
The second, Jeannie's sister from I Dream of Jeannie. Has taken me so much time to prepare. There has been an absolute abundance of handsewing involved. But in the end it has been well worth it and I am incredibly excited to wear it. It is one costume that I am very proud of. Photos of my actually in it, will be up early next week.
The third, was to be Madoka, from an Anime that I love. It is only today, that I have decided to throw in the towel on this one. The bodice is made, and the skirt almost about to be sewn on. I tried it on and am just not happy with how it looks on me. The worst part is that I know I have been unhappy wearing projects that I wasn't 100% about in the past, so I am just not enthused about finishing this. In the end, I have decided to give it a miss. It is mostly made up from fabrics that I already had in my stash or leftover bits, so it's no big deal there. And thankfully I can use the shoes and wigs that I bought for Lolita. I'm a little disappointed, but in the end much happier for not doing it so that I can spend my time leading up to the event in a more productive manner.
So, instead, I will be pulling out a few of my existing costumes to decide on a replacement.

In Full Swing
Well, the year is in full swing now and the costuming is stacking up. After two weeks of hanging in the balance for Jury Duty, I am finally starting to get my life back on track. After the unfortunate job loss last year (just in time for Christmas no less), I need to find something to do with my life. I tossed around some ideas but in the end keep coming back to loving being a government employee in a support role that I leave behind when I go home at the end of the day. While I do love being a makeup artist, it's just not something feasibly that I can do on a full time basis and support myself. At the end of the day, I need some other form of employment from 9 to 5, Monday to Friday. Good news is though, government jobs are coming up and I am applying for them. They are even advertising for positions at the new office building which will be at the old University just a 10 minute walk from my home. That's what you call a dream job location.
All this has meant though, that at the moment I really need to be careful with my spondoolies. Which does tend to equal trying to use fabric that I already have. (I just need to avoid fabric stores). The only pieces of fabric that I have bought of late have been for upcoming projects that I have absolutely nothing for - mainly character creations. I've been really proud of myself so far in that all of my historical and vintage creations have come directly from what I already own. I have also tried to get ahead of myself for the year 'cause I just know that once I go back to work, I won't have anywhere near as much sewing time.
I have a few projects currently on my sewing machine:
1. Vintage
I am making some new dresses to wear to work once I have a job - both vintage print and fun print fabric, as in Disney prints and some of the great stuff that I brought back from Japan.
2. Stargate Flight Suit
Not much "making", but I do have patches to sew on. My brother and I are doing some new uniforms for Gold Coast Supanova in April.
3. I Dream of Jeannie - Sister
As Barbara Eden will be at Supanova, I decided that it is finally time to make my I Dream Of Jeannie costume. I have been collecting the fabric for about 4 years now, so it is about time. There's quite a bit to make, including custom dying shoes, hat making, wig and painting a bottle.
4. Madoka
From an Anime that my Anime group is currently watching through, she is a magical girl with pink hair and a pretty cute outfit. I started collecting the fabric last year and some of the accessories. I finally picked up the last bits that I needed on my trip to Japan. I am trying to get it ready for Supanova as well, but it will depend on how everything goes.
I will keep you all posted as to how things go.

January and links
Well the New Year has well and truly rolled in and I have been sewing up a storm. Mostly vintage dresses so that I will be appropriately attired when I find a new job later this year. I'm not sure if I mentioned it here, but as I worked for the Queensland Government and we went through a re-shuffle of everything, my job was made redundant. I was not impressed but I am moving on and will hopefully find something better.
In the meantime I have been working my freelance Makeup Artistry and Hair Styling business. I am starting to get into the rounds of vintage markets doing hair and makeup and selling a few supplies. If you are interested I do have a facebook page:

for my business that I am in the process of working on. In terms of sewing, I have been making makeup brush rolls and retro headscarfs out of cute fabrics in preparation for the next fair. So far so good.
Other than that I have been getting ready for my trip to Japan later this month. It's only a week and half away now and time is fast running out for me to get ready. I am making myself a new winter coat to take. It's made out of the leftovers from my regency pelisse, interlined with leftover flannel and lined with a soft polished cotton. I also raided my teddybear fur stash so that it is plush. At the moment I am in the process of sewing the fur onto the cuffs and around the hood. It's an absolute nightmare to work with and driving me up the wall. I have inhaled so much fluff!
I will be heading away for 2 weeks, so won't be posting here much in that time. However if you are interested in my travels - my travel blog is the place to follow. I will do my best to update it every day but I guess that will depend on the hotel's internet connection. It's apparently very good, but we shall see.

This one is another take on a safari ensemble - more feminine this time for a trip to the zoo. We did it last year and it was such a success that we wanted to do it again. Costume nerddism is alive
So, I recently mentioned to a few of my fellow costumers that I had created an excel spreadsheet that allows me to track how far away a sewing deadline is. It's just a little something that counts down the days and weeks to the event. But when I mentioned this, they asked that I share. So, I am sharing. For all of my readers.
All you need to do is enter the event name into the event column and the costume that you are intending to wear in the costume column and then the date dd/mm/yyyy into the event date column and it will automatically work out how long you have based on the current date. All you need to do is enter the event name into the event column and the costume that you are intending to wear in the costume column and then the date dd/mm/yyyy into the event date column and it will automatically work out how long you have based on the current date. And coming up...
So, again it comes to planning time of year. It looks set to be a pretty big year next year, but I will go on! The only difference this time is that I am planning to mainly use my stash fabrics. The main reason is that my job has been made redundant (nasty Premier in Queensland at the moment) and I could be out of work for sometime. I'm looking for something else and working a bit more in makeup, but it could be a while until I get something a bit more permanent. At any rate, it is a good excuse to use up some of my stash. There's quite a bit there and it would be nice to have some more storage room in the cupboard.
As for what is coming up, let's look ahead.
November 17th - Vintage Soiree

This is the anniversary of the day that Queensland became its own state (in 1859). We provide atmosphere to the event by showing up in historical crinoline evening gowns. I'm planning to put together a new ensemble out of roll of white tartan silk that I bought last year.
December 15th - RIFF Wine Dine and Recline - Ancients
I have always been fascinated with the ancient Minoan culture, so I thought it was high time to make an outfit. I've done my research and started putting together my patterns. I have all my linen fabric and am really looking forward to this as an event. I just need to get cracking on it a bit more.
December 16th - Vintage Fair
As part of my makeup artistry business, I will be running a stall at a local vintage fair doing vintage hair and makeup as well as selling a few bits and pieces. I'm getting a little nervous about it all but I am slowly working on getting everything ready for the big day. I just need to decide what vintage dress to wear.
December 31st - New Year
I have yet to decide what I will be doing for the upcoming New Year. I'm not planning to host anything, but I do want to do something. And costumes are always something that I love. Will have to think on this a little more.

But there's more...
So, what is next? I have been so quiet lately on my journal and blog because of the secret cancan project, that it is a wonder to actually have stuff to post about. The rest of the year looks set to be a full one. And it all begins this weekend:
Saturday 1st September - Regency Ball
Going to pull out my 1823 pink and black ballgown again. I would really like a new regency ballgown but this year it is just not feasible. It's a good thing that I really like the one that I do have.
Friday 7th September - Vintage Fashion Fair
Haven't really planned what I am wearing, but I have quite a few pieces that I can choose from - including the couple of halter dresses that I finished recently.
Saturday 15th September - Gangsters Ball
Dress is made. I managed to get my ACG ball costume ready a day earlier than planned, so I had an extra day of sewing, and knocked over the 1950s dress that I am planning to wear. Now I am just waiting for the new sequin shoes to arrive. I thought it all deserved a bit of bling.
Saturday 22nd September - My Birthday
I'm planning a party again, with an M theme, so I am making a couple of costumes for it. My mum is going to be Mother Nature, so I have bought some deep green fabric to make a dress. It will be a regency one so that she is able to wear it again. I am making a couple of accessories for my brother but he has sworn me to secrecy, and as for myself, I am planning to dress as Madoka from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I do need to hit the fabric shop this weekend so that I can make a start on my costume. I have yet to even draft the pattern, but I do have some leave coming up, so I am not too worried.
Saturday 29th September - Victorian Picnic
My plan is to finish the half started 1870s bustle from last year. I had done all the patterns and mock up, it's cut out and the underskirt is even made. I just need to get cracking on it and finish it. I am using a lovely roll of red/yellow/brown tartan cotton linen and accenting it with red linen and silk. It's a piece I bought a while ago. I had originally seen the fabric for $7.95 / metre and decided that was a bit expensive. The next time I went to the store it was on the $1.99 rack. Needless to say, I bought a bit.
Saturday 6th October - Animania
I haven't been for a few years, but I am planning to check out Animania again this year. I suspect I will be wearing my Madoka costume, but I could be persuaded to wear Saber Lion. I guess it will really depend on the temperature. Saber Lion is made of polar fleece, so while I am cuddly in it, it is extremely warm.

The ACG have been invited to add atmosphere to a festival (I pimped us out during the Steampunk safari I ran earlier this year). I am thinking the tartan bustle, but I could easily pull out something else. I certainly have plenty to choose from.

At the local art gallery, I am organising another trip to view the new exhibition which is apparently amazing. We are dressing in Georgian and Regency, so I am planning to dig out my green jacket and skirt set. I do need to make a new hat for this though, as my previous one met with an unfortunate mud incident at History Alive earlier this year - I was so annoyed, I kinda squished it, so, need a new one.
Then comes supanova in November. I am only planning the one new costume - Lottie from Disney's The Princess and The Frog. I bought the pink taffeta for the dress down in Adelaide on the weekend, so I am determined that it will be ready to wear. I just have to decide on my patterns and draft them up. Not sure what I am getting myself into there - seems like a lot. @__@

October!
So what's next? October....
Yes, insanity has struck again and as the weather starts to get warmer in Brisbane, I am still costuming. In fact, I already have something on each weekend in October. The best thing about it all is that for much of October I am actually re-wearing a lot of my costumes, so it really gives me a chance to put a lot more effort into the new costumes that I am actually making. Let's look at what's upcoming.
9th - Steampunk Tea
I will be re-wearing my key maiden costume for this one. I am definitely going with the blue wig again, I love how it looked last time I wore it, so I am all set for this event. It's actually my only complete steampunk costume. I have a lot of ideas about new steampunk costumes and I am currently collecting bits and pieces for the next one, but that won't happen any more until next year.
14th - 16th - Napoleonic Camping Weekend
A stress-free re-enactment (no public) weekend with my fellow Napoleonic re-enactors. I haven't really sorted out what I am going to wearing, but it will all just be pulled out of my wardrobe. I may have to resort to a wig a some point though. (My hair is currently half turquoise, so not really historically accurate).
20th - Steampunk movie outing to 3 Musketeers
Again, a re-wear of my key maiden. It could turn out to be a little simplistic. This event is falling on a Thursday night, so I will be getting ready at work. I will have to see how it goes. I am very tempted though to use my actual green/brown hair instead of the blue wig. I will have to think about it.
23rd - Victorian Picnic
Both my parents are coming along, but thankfully re-wearing the costumes that I made for them when we did Newstead House a couple of years ago. As for me, I am making a new Natural Form bustle. It's actually out of the same gold fabric that my last natural form bustle was made out of (I have butt loads of that fabric - it's 3 meters wide and only cost $7.95/meter). At any rate, I have been able to get a new skirt and bodice out of it. And I am using the leftover sherbet orange silk as the apron and bodice trimmings. I have most of it put together and am just up to the trimming and finishing stages.
28th - Vintage Fashion Fair
Whether or not I have new frock for this will remain to be seen. I do have a few that I can wear and quite frankly, I probably should, but then I do have a few new vintage dresses cut out and ready to be made up. I guess it will depend on how inspired I am to have something new. The real question is going to be if I do 1940s or 1950s.
29th - Playford Ball
Regency again. This is the yearly regency ball (that hasn't been on for the last 2 years - go figure). No stress for me, as I am wearing my 1823 ballgown. I really love this dress so am more than happy to wear it numerous times. And I guess winning the award for workmanship on it has really made me love it that much more. Vanity is thy name. I just want to wear it again and show it off! I'm also running a hair and makeup workshop this same afternoon for the ACG. On the other hand though, I would like to try and get my mum's open robe made up for her to wear to this event. It's cut and I have started making it.

On the cards
After the rush to get my last two costumes done (the 15th Century and my Saber Lion) I was adamant that I would have no more rushing to get things done. No such luck I tell you. I have scrapped one thing off my list and postponed to make it at a later date, but I have unfortunately added something new. Which means that I need to get off my butt and get productive. So what am I making now?
1. Picnic at Pemberley
A blessed nothing! The open robe I had hoped to make for my mum is never going to happen in time, so I am going to lend her one of my bonnets and sashes to go with her yellow dress. A shawl may be needed as well - depending on how fresh the weather is this weekend.
2. Gangsters Ball
Super late notice, but I will be attending a gangsters ball in a just over a weeks time. Meaning that I need an outfit. I really want to use up some fabric in my stash, and went hunting for something slinky. I have come up with a choice of fabrics. I have just over 3 metres of red or just under 3 metres of purple. My biggest decision though is what style to do. 3 options. A 1950s fitted dress, a 1920s handkerchief hem dress or a 1920s drop waist tiered dress (3 tiered ruffles). I also have a 1930s pattern, but would have to buy enough fabric to make the dress. Please give me your opinions and help me decide!
3. Redcliffe Festival
We have decided as a bit of a group effort to go in Crinoline. Thankfully this means that I just pull my purple tartan skirt and velvet bodice out of the cupboard to wear. But, I am going to give it a red hot go to make the matching hat. It's all cut out and has partially been started, so I really should finish it in time.
4. My birthday
I am hosting a Georgian dinner with my close friends, and as it's my Birthday, I want something new. I will be re-using an open robe pattern for myself, so that is no big worry, I just have to cut the fabric and get cracking. The real worry is that my brother has decided that yes, he will dress up for me. Meaning that I need to get something made for him too - I am aiming to have a shirt, knee pants and vest done. The only part the I expect to be of issue is the pattern drafting. My brother has a rather rotund (nice way of putting it) stomach that I have to get around. Of course, the pattern that I have don't really accommodate his size, so it could be a bit of an issue. At least I have a couple of days before the party to get it all made up. I am taking him fabric shopping on Saturday so that he can help choose the fabric (only fair considering I make him pay for it!).
So, that's what's on the cards for September. If you notice, you will realise that it all equates to an event each weekend. Hmmm, can see I am going to be busy. At least the weather is starting to warm up which in theory should make me more productive of an evening.

So, what's on the machine?
So, it really has been quite a while since I posted about my upcoming projects. I guess I have just been so busy attending events that I forget to do the whole progress thing. And between a few other frustrations in my life, I've had some trouble scraping up the motivation. But enough of that. I recently took a week of leave off work to dedicate to some sewing time. I don't really have that much to show for it, because I was mainly drafting up patterns for my upcoming projects. One of which was the regency dress for my mum (last post). But aside from that, I do have a few events coming up in August and September. And events mean sewing projects. (Well, to me they do).
1. 15th Century Living History (1 day)
In a couple of weeks time I will be attending a living history day in 15th Century clothing. Of course, I really don't have anything that is historically accurate in terms of medieval costume, so this meant a whole new outfit. I really struggle with medieval costumes. They are generally made up from rectangles and triangles and while that sounds simple, I really struggle to sew if I don't have a pattern. I guess it is just the way that learnt - pattern drafting and grading from a block. I work best that way. So, I jumped online and bought "A Medieval Tailor's Assistant". It has truly been a huge help, though time-consuming.
The first step was to create your pattern block. I had to enlist the help of my mum to pin the fabric in place to me so that I would be able to draft the block. It is all described in one of the chapters in the book. So, I traced off the block, cut out a mock up and tried it on. It fit perfectly! From there, I have been able to draft up the pattern for my flat front kirtle and over robe. After another mock up, I cut out the fabric and am now getting stuck into the sewing part. Unfortunately that has involved a hell of a lot of hand-sewing and that is just taking too much time (It's all that I have left now). But I am progressing and I am determined it will be ready in time. I guess it is a good thing that next Wednesday is a public holiday (show day).
2. ACG Ball - Saber Lion
So, I have been keeping this on a little hush-hush. A couple of people know what I am intending to make, but this is my very first time working with creating body suits. I was intending to pad out my body a bit, but my first mock up was a utter failure, and the padding looked really terrible. I had another hash at the pattern and I am so unbelievably pleased with it. *cue happy dance* I just need to make one simple change to the amount of allowance across the hip and then I am ready to cut my fabric. My fabric has been collected and dyed to match (well as close as I can get), and my wig arrived last week. I will just need to make a couple of style changes to it and trim up the fringe. 3. Redcliffe Festival - Bustle Gown
I finally have a deadline. I have two bustle gown ensembles cut out and waiting to be sewn up. Both of them have been started, but will require quite a bit more work to be finished. I would really like to get one done for September 18th. It's not doing to worry me too much if I don't get it done in time, 'cause I do have another bustle gown that I could wear, but it would be nice. At any rate, I am hosting a Victorian picnic later this year, so I will have one done by then.
I do have a few more things up my sleeve, but I am just trying to focus on August for the moment. I suppose I had best get my butt in gear and get back to the sewing. So much to do, so little time....

So, I have been keeping this on a little hush-hush. A couple of people know what I am intending to make, but this is my very first time working with creating body suits. I was intending to pad out my body a bit, but my first mock up was a utter failure, and the padding looked really terrible. I had another hash at the pattern and I am so unbelievably pleased with it. *cue happy dance* I just need to make one simple change to the amount of allowance across the hip and then I am ready to cut my fabric. My fabric has been collected and dyed to match (well as close as I can get), and my wig arrived last week. I will just need to make a couple of style changes to it and trim up the fringe. 3. Redcliffe Festival - Bustle Gown
I finally have a deadline. I have two bustle gown ensembles cut out and waiting to be sewn up. Both of them have been started, but will require quite a bit more work to be finished. I would really like to get one done for September 18th. It's not doing to worry me too much if I don't get it done in time, 'cause I do have another bustle gown that I could wear, but it would be nice. At any rate, I am hosting a Victorian picnic later this year, so I will have one done by then.
I do have a few more things up my sleeve, but I am just trying to focus on August for the moment. I suppose I had best get my butt in gear and get back to the sewing. So much to do, so little time....

What's next?
With all the events that I have been attending lately, its a wonder that I have any time to whip up my new projects. But, even though I have been booked out the last few weeks, there is still more to come. Upcoming I have at least a lolita meet, a birthday party, regency re-enactment, medieval events, victorian. The list just doesn't end.
What I am working on most urgently now is getting ready for History Alive. It's a big re-enactment event here in Brisbane over the Queens Birthday long weekend. We head out on Friday to set up and schlep home Sunday night. I'm glad that the public holiday is Monday - I get my day of rest in before I have to head back to work. But, as with every year, I look at having more exciting pieces to add to our re-enactment scene. Last year, my biggest project was making the shade shelter. My wonderful father did the poles and ropes for me.
This year, I have my Dad making me a historical table. It's actually my Christmas present from him, and has taken some time for us to come up with a complete design and actually start making it. Now it is coming down to crunch time and he is almost finished. I won't spoil it and you will have to wait until it is complete for photos, but I am so proud of him and what he has been able to accomplish.
In the meantime, I am trying to get the bits and pieces ready for me to take, so the list of my intentions:
1. Table cloth (to protect the fabulous new table that is being made)
2. Tapestry ground covering (picked up some really cheap tapestry fabric ($5/metre) at spotlight)
3. Small table cloth (to hide the hideous old camping table that we use for tea)
4. Matress Slip cover (to act as a sheet and keep my mattresses together and hidden as my bedding)
5. Regency Apron (to protect my gown - errr, have not started this yet)
Possible Items:
6. Muff
7. Pelisse
8. Regency Top Hat
And finally, a quilt. I realise now that the quilt is not going to get done in time for History Alive, so instead, I would like to have it ready for the next regency event that I go to which will be in August. At this stage, I have a few pieces of fabric that I intend to use, but have not been able to source it all. But I am intending to draw up my embroidery designs for the quilt and take them along with me to sew while we are being ladies at our events. This way, I will be both be doing lady-like things and being productive.
Hmmm, lots to do, little time to do it.

Supanova Planning 2011
And a new year has begun. This one looks set to be full of costuming endeavours as well, and I am already booked up for quite a few things this year. But first things first, Supanova. I know it isn't until April, but I really have to get things underway if I want it all to go smoothly. We are talking three costumes.
Friday afternoon / night:
I have a few options. There is Mrs Lovett- by the sea, The White Queen (bodice fitting issues now) or Tia Dalma. I haven't decided which way I will go, but at any rate, it doesn't require me to do any further sewing.
Saturday:
Again, I am pretty much set. My brother and I will be wearing our Stargate Offworld Uniforms. I have it all sorted apart from a couple of the patches and velcro backing (I was going to order them last week but the on-line shop was shut). And I have yet to sort out our weapons (P90s), and my zat needs painting.
Sunday:
This is where I run into problems. I just cannot decide what I want to be. I have narrowed it down to a few options, but I am having trouble making the final decision.
And of course I will most likely be picking one of these for to make for the ACG Ball in August. Please help me decide!

and as a final option there is Lord of the Rings - Eowyns Funeral Gown.

As the end of the year approaches...
Who can believe that December is upon us again? But that brings me around to the planning of the coming year ahead. In this case 2011. I am hoping that it will not be quite as full on with the sewing so that I don't quite burn myself out as I managed to do this year. It has taken me a couple of months to get back on track and into the sewing process, and even then it is not 100% commitment I am feeling right now. But, in working out the year ahead...
December 2010
10th - Proclamation Day Event - 1850s
Coming up fast, and my outfit is in the making. Bodice is underway and I only have the sleeves, trims and eyelets to add to it. Skirt just needs some hooks and I am making a hair garland as some point too. But I am determined to get this ready in time.
11th - Wine Dine and Recline - Ancients
Our end-of-year re-enactment event. I could of course make up the Egyptian costume that I had planned for earlier this year, but I just don't look quite that good wrapped in a white and my wig turned out a little too Cher. Instead, my plan is to go for Greek. I have some dark blue fabric in my stash that is perfect, I just need to get some shells and beads to work the jewellery side of things. I've also got a blonde wig in may stash that I don't have a specific use for, so I am planning to style that up.
31st - Mad Hatter's New Year's Party
I am actually hosting this one. Not strictly costume but everyone must wear a hat. Me though, I will be making a whole ensemble that goes with my hat. I am intending it to be very cool to wear so that I survive our Brisbane summer evening in it. At this point of the party planning, the invitations have gone out and I am starting to make a lot of plans. Especially in terms of food, games and decorations.

After attending the one in Adelaide, I am really hoping to make it along to this fashion fair as well. It will of course call for a new Vintage Dress. I am not entirely sure what era it will be yet, but there will be one.

But my third costume is up in the air right now - it really depends on how toned up I can get my body before April next year.
14th - 17th - Jane Austen Festival Australia - Regency / late Georgian
I have all my fabric, and am determined to start soon. I will be re-wearing a couple of dresses that I already have, but there is still a lot to be made. Including outer garments like capes and pelisse's this time. Not to mention that I will need reticules, bonnets and new stays. Good thing that I am planning some time off after Christmas. Should put me in order for a head start on getting it all done.

I love going to the movies in costume, and this presents the perfect opportunity to wear my Tia Dalma costume again. I just need to rope in a couple of people to dress up and go with me.

I will be camping out at this re-enactment event again next year. Thankfully though, I won't be putting together new costumes as I will have all the stuff that I made for JAFA in April. Tents are already sorted as well. Though I am hoping to get Dad into helping me put together a table and maybe a chair or bench as well. Good thing we have a trailer and my new car came with a towbar.
Heritage Ball
I attend every year, well so far for that last 3 at least and I intend to be there again. Thankfully I don't need to make my parents anything new next year. As for myself, I am thinking that I will pull out the blue/black bustle gown that I wore a couple years ago and re-trim it, maybe making a new apron and bodice. The theme this year is also really inspiring me - mask. I am actually thinking that I might go all out and trim my dress and mask to a theme.

It will be my very first time camping at the Medieval Fair. So far, we have a plan for a 15th Century group, and I believe that our proposal has been put in, but it takes a bit of waiting to find out all the details - how much room we have etc. And of course, I will end up making two gowns and complete undergarments.

A full-immersion historical event that is in the planning stages. With the option of 19th Century, a couple of us are thinking crinoline gowns would be nice to wear at some point, though we would be camping regency style since we already have the tents and everything. Again, all set for that, what with JAFA at the beginning of the year.
27th - Australian Costumers Guild Ball
I had such a blast attending this year, that I fully intend to make the trip again next year. As to my costume, that is up in the air, but I do have a lot of time to plan it. I haven't even decided if I would wear a film character of historical. I am tempted though to put some time into it and enter the competition too.
On top of these definite plans, there are a few others that I have been discussing with various people. A few things that we would like to do etc. And of course, with my involvement with the Kaleidoscope Dancers, will see me out and about in my Regency dresses throughout the year. It really is a good thing that I make a heap of them to wear at JAFA. Sets me up for the numerous events that I attend during the year. Hmmm, I start looking at this list and it really is no wonder that it feels like my year just flies on by.

Monday back at work
Now that we are officially in the new year, I feel like I need to get a start on my upcoming projects. Namely, the Jane Austen Festival and Supanova. Both in April. As supanova comes first, I would really like to get my costumes complete for it first. As you know, I will re-wear my Tia Dalma costume one day, and I intend to re-wear for the Friday evening. My new project for it is a set of the Duty Blue Uniform from Battlestar Galactica (the current one for those who remember the 70s version). It is pretty simple and I have all the fabric for this already (apart from buttons), I just need to draft up the patterns (I am butchering a couple to get the desired look) and get cracking. I did actually cut out one of the undershirts yesterday, so I should be able to get it whipped up in next to no time.
First and Foremost though, I have a couple of projects that need to be done by mid February. I am making a new regency jacket and vest for my Dad's Birthday and I am making a lolita winter coat to take to Japan in February. The coat is all cut out, I am just waiting on the fur fabric to arrive so that I can get stuck into whipping it up. It's a good thing that I have next week off on leave. I hope to make much progress.

Monday 25th
Stupid that I am, it really hasn't hit me until just how much sewing I am taking on in the upcoming months. All of it for July; there will be 8 outfits in total. Thankfully one of them will only require a new jacket, but still, I am really starting to dread the limited amount of time that I have to get everything done in. So, I have decided that I really need to start getting focused. No more vintage or lolita sewing until I have all my projects completed.
To be fair I have actually made a start on all of them, some more than others. And I think the best way for me to get my head around everything is to just start at the ones that I need done first and go from there. Which translates to Newstead House on the 11th. I need three outfits completed and this what I have left to do..
Mum's 1850s day gown:
Garibaldi blouse - sew sleeves to blouse, add buttons and button holes (mum will cover the buttons for me)
Skirt - need to add trim (I am loosing the detail I added in the skirt and I need to add 'ribbon' to make it stand out)
Bonnet - it is all cut out and I have done some of the machine sewing, I just need to start wiring and gluing it together
Reticule - cut out but this is really quick to make up
Bum pad - I still need to draw up a pattern, I just keep forgetting.
Dad's 1850s day suit:
Vest - hand sewing on inside and buttons and buttonholes
Pants and Jacket - I need to cut out the pattern so that I can cut the fabric (at least I have all the fabric now)
Cravat - I need to cut this out (thankfully it is just a long strip of cotton)
My 1840s maid gown:
Dress - hand sewing on bodice, sew skirt in at waistband, hem, sleeves and add eyelets down the back
Apron - lots of hand sewing hems
Cap - need to find my pattern and cut this out
So really when you look at these three, there is not that much the needs to be done. And I am slowly making progress. At least the hand sewing is semi-relaxing to do and I can watch TV while I do it. Mum's outfit is by far the furtherest along and I think she is really looking forward to me getting it done. But then again, because my maid gown is so simple and has zero trims on it, it has been rather quick to go together. And I promise that as I get the bits and pieces done, I will strive to post photos of my hard work. It helps me as a sense of accomplishment.
That being sent, I got so caught up in my current book tonight that I have done nothing more than waste time. Though I am considering taking Wednesday off on flex, my boss will be away for a few days and it kinda works out for timing. Hmmmm, bears consideration.

1840s corded petticoat
And voila, I am making progress on my next project. Originally I was going to be doing steampunk next, but as I am not going to the event, I am putting that project on hold. It will get made later in the year, but I would rather put my time into all my projects for July. But the purpose of this post is to say that I have finally finished another part.
This is my corded petticoat to be worn under 1840s dresses. It has taken a damn long time to finish but now that I am done, I am glad that I persevered. I started out with two 90cm widths of fabric that are both 1.5 metres long. I then stitched them at the side seams and left a placket at the top of one. And then the cording began. I actually folded some into the hem when I did that to begin with, so that it would match the rest of the petticoat. There are a total of 42 rows. And each one is formed by using a zipper foot and sewing a pintuck with a piece of cord inside. Originally I was going to use cording, but at 90c (or more) per metre, it gets very expensive for basically 80 metres of the stuff. So instead, I found a thick wool. It cost me about $7 for around 50 metres; so it is much cheaper and it has actually worked out really well. It think it really holding out a pretty decent shape and will create a great base for my dress. Especially once I get the flounced petticoat and plain petticoat over the top. Now, I can move onto the next step of my projects. But just so that you can actually understand where I am coming from, the list of things that I need done for July are:
11th - Newstead House Garden Party
1840s Maid Dress for Me - to make 3 flounce petticoat, plain petticoat, dress, apron, cap.
1849 Day Dress for my Mum - to make dress, bonnet, reticule
1850s suit for my Dad - to make vest, trousers, jacket

I have to make my gown, chemise and hooded cape. The gown and cape are cut out, so I plan to actually start these this weekend.

1880s bustle ball gown for me - Also needs a pattern, but I have all the undergarments bar one petticoat done, and it is cut out.
1840s ball gown for Mum - Yet another pattern to be drawn up. Thankfully though, she will be wearing the same undergarments as for the day gown.
1850s evening suit for Dad - The only difference to his day suit is that there will be a different jacket and vest.

I have to make my gown, chemise and hooded cape. The gown and cape are cut out, so I plan to actually start these this weekend.
25th / 26th - History Alive
1830s day gown - thankfully just me at this one, and all I have to do is sew my dress together. (If I go a second day, I will definitely be re-wearing something)
25th - Heritage Ball
1880s bustle ball gown for me - Also needs a pattern, but I have all the undergarments bar one petticoat done, and it is cut out.
1840s ball gown for Mum - Yet another pattern to be drawn up. Thankfully though, she will be wearing the same undergarments as for the day gown.
1850s evening suit for Dad - The only difference to his day suit is that there will be a different jacket and vest.
So with those four events looming up on me, I really do need to get stuck into my sewing. Thankfully I have all of May and June free to make my new costumes. And the best thing about dressing mum and dad is that once I have these ones done for them, they can be worn again and again without too much drama. Other than the fact that I will be making regency clothing for them to come to the ball in September, but at least they go together pretty quickly. Though looking at that list, perhaps I should head back to my sewing machine...
