Karaoke Bar (CD)
Angus & Julia Stone
Angus & Julia Stone's Karaoke Bar will sweep you off your feet. This is an album about joy: the everyday joys of dingy karaoke bars when you're up next to sing, the pulsing, dreamy joys of being in love. Nostalgia walks hand in hand with melancholy throughout these tracks. Listen to this album from cover to cover and watch your mood slowly improve: what's remarkable about Karaoke Bar is the way the songs mirror life, the ebb and flow of the good and bad times, the delicate sense of loveliness interwoven throughout our days.
Truth Or Consequence (CD)
Amyl & The Sniffers
Amyl & The Sniffers know how to put on a show. The Aussie punks go country on Truth or Consequence , a live album recorded at LA's classic El Coyote restaurant. The band covers their own tracks – country style – and throws in two previously unreleased songs, plus a cover of Australian country artist Slim Dusty's "Lights on the Hill." The album accompanies a film of the concert, which looks gorgeous and filled with throwback country glamour. Let the good times roll!
There Near (CD)
Dinosaur Jr.
Nothing satisfies like Dinosaur Jr. and their latest, There Near , is a feast. J Mascis' lyrics are razor sharp, often timely (how often do you get to hear an alternative rock legend sing the word "edgelord"), and filled with crisp, undeniable imagery. The percussion is primal and the guitars as intense as ever – in fact, possibly even more intense than most of the band's contemporary outings, thanks to Mascis' use of a recently-acquired '70s era Mesa Boogie MK 1 amp, the same type of amp used on Dinosaur Jr's very first album. According to Mascis, someone told him this album seems more "upbeat" than their usual sound, and yeah, you can pick that up in the melodies...but then listen closer because the lyrics might be decidedly less so. There Near is another great album from a consistently great, legendary band.
Reality Awaits (CD)
The Strokes
The Strokes are back, people. On Reality Awaits , the band shows they're lightyears past the gritty garage sleaze of their early work. Working with Rick Rubin once more, they trade in disco-punk of 2000's The New Abnormal for a chilled out, woozy, synthed-up sound. Call it Yacht Strokes, call it weirdo pop...there's simply no categorizing this record. The band gets experimental, Julian Casablancas gets into autotune, the whole record gives listeners the easy-breezy sense of "on vacation with the Strokes." Languid, soulful, and totally unexpected, it's exciting stuff.

Do That Again (CD)
Malcolm Todd
It's easy to see why Malcolm Todd is a star on the rise. His new album, Do That Again , is charming, vulnerable, and easy to love. Todd blends indie pop and contemporary R&B, keeping listeners on their toes with self-deprecating lyrics, unexpected musical flourishes, and melodies that pack an emotional punch. While the songs often feel intimate in nature, it's pretty clear that this is the sound of something big. This is the good stuff.
Not Bad For New Jersey (CD)
Brian Fallon
Brian Fallon, frontman of The Gaslight Anthem, reunites with producer Butch Walker for Not Bad for New Jersey , his first collection of original solo songs since 2020's Local Honey . This is high-energy, power-popish rock about underdogs turning setbacks into rocket fuel. Features Brandon Flowers, Phil Collen, Lori McKenna, Donovan Woods, and guitarist Marc Ribot.
SOTC II (LP)
Standing On The Corner
Nobody makes music like Standing On The Corner. The NYC outfit returns with the out-of-this-world SOTC II . Woozy, weird, and smart, the album combines elements of musical history from the mainland US, Puerto Rico, and Africa...all through a distinctively no-wave lens. Melodic yet off-kilter, enjoyable and avant-garde, SOTC II layers jazz, funk, psych, soul, doowop, salsa, rap, and punk into a sound that feels entirely fresh and exciting. With contributions from Styles P, The Warlockettes, Ladybug Mecca, Bubba Dupree, Claudette Ortiz, Sonia Sanchez, Solange, and Danny Brown.
Yours Sincerely [Mothership Color Vinyl] (LP)
Haruomi Hosono
Yours Sincerely is the first release in seven plus years from Yellow Magic Orchestra's Haruomi Hosono. The cult fave composer, producer, and musician, now 78 years old, has once again crafted an album that feels very human and yet almost otherworldly in its beauty. The songs draw inspiration from mid-century American music, mercy and compassion, a sense of wonder, and a regard for the Earth and its people. Hosono's thoughtful vocals weave through gentle psych-folk and cosmic avant-pop, with female vocalists sometimes adding to the multi-layered tapestry. A gorgeous, good-hearted record that stands among the year's best.

Leap Life (LP)
Saul Williams
Saul Williams' first solo album in over 10 years marks a major return for one of the most influential voices in spoken word and experimental music. The project has been carefully sequenced by composer/producer Carlos Niño as a fully immersive, front-to-back listening experience. The album expands Saul's sound into electronic and ambient territories while remaining rooted in spoken word, with rich sound design built from nature recordings, environmental textures, and expansive instrumentation.
LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW [Bathroom Blue Vinyl] (LP)
Ecca Vandal
This is one spectacular punk rock album. Australia's Ecca Vandal writes smart, fierce, chaotic earworms, fusing '77-style punk rock, noise, riot grrrl, pop-punk, trap, and maybe even a bit of grime. LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW moves from genre to genre effortlessly, throwing in creative and surprising elements (concert piano, classic torch songs). A strangely beautiful, brilliantly confrontational album that's one of the most interesting, innovative, and hard-hitting things you'll hear this year.
Supergirl (BLU)
Craig Gillespie
Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock), unlike her cousin Superman (David Corenswet), grew up on a severed piece of Krypton and saw the last of their people die-and became a jaded, hard-partying mess as a result. She might finally mine the hero within when intergalactic orphan Ruthye (Eve Ridley) seeks her help for vengeance against the space pirate Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts). Flavorful DCU reimagining for the Maid of Might co-stars David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa as Lobo.
Distance In Static [Blue Pastel Vinyl] (LP)
Bonobo
A new Bonobo record is always greeted with a certain amount of fanfare...but this one is especially good. Distance In Static is a gorgeous, globe-trotting, affecting album. With lyrics in English, Urdu, and Japanese, samples of traditional Iranian music and recordings of the guzheng, and a cast of collaborators including Arooj Aftab, Joy Crookes, Nilüfer Yanya, Ichiko Aoba, Nicole Miglis, and Aanya Martin, you know you're in for something extraordinary. Distance In Static is an album that emanates light, beauty, and humanity, a beacon of sorts for our dark, strange days.
