History
[edit]
Obradoiro CAB was founded in 1970 and started playing in the third division after acquiring the spot of the basketball section of SD Compostela. They were promoted for the first time to the Liga Nacional after finishing in the third position of the 1981–82 Primera División B.[6]
Obradoiro played only the 1982–83 season in the top flight, where it achieved two wins in 26 games.
2009–10 was its returning season to the Spanish top division, Liga ACB, after the Supreme Court conceded that the Júver Murcia committed improper alignment in a matchup in the 1990 promotion playoff.[7] A horrible second half of the league, with one win in 17 matches, caused the relegation to LEB Oro, the second division of Spanish basketball.
In the next season, Obradoiro came back to Liga ACB as the runner-up of the 2010–11 LEB Oro season and also won its first national title: the Copa Príncipe de Asturias.[8]
The 2012–13 ACB season was the best one in the history of the club. Obradoiro CAB finished the regular season in the eight position and joined the playoffs, where it was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the champion Real Madrid. Obradoiro CAB had a highly competitive regular season campaign, closing it out with a 18–16 record. The team capitalized heavily on its home court advantage at Fontes do Sar and pulled off crucial upset victories, including a memorable 62–54 away win against FC Barcelona in December 2012.[9] By finishing 8th, the team secured a historic first-ever entry into the Liga ACB Title Playoffs.[10]
The 2014–15 ACB season was the 45th season in the history of the club, and Obradoiro's 6th season in the Liga ACB, the top-tier professional basketball league in Spain. Led by head coach Moncho Fernández, the Galician team finished the regular season in 12th place with a 15–19 record, comfortably maintaining its status in the top division.[11]
The 2017–18 ACB season was the 48th season in the history of Obradoiro CAB, and its 9th season overall in the Liga ACB. The Galician club completed the regular season in 12th place with a 14–20 record, safely remaining in Spain's premier basketball division. The campaign was punctuated by high-scoring thrillers. Obradoiro achieved a historic club landmark on January 28, 2018, by dominating reigning league champions Valencia Basket 96–77.[12] Obradoiro also featured in the league's highest-scoring game of the season, falling 112–116 in a double-overtime battle against Estudiantes. The stars of the team were Matt Thomas and Artem Pustovyi. Matt Thomas had an exceptional debut year in Europe, establishing himself as one of the top perimeter threats in the league with an average of 15.4 points per game before his later transitions to Valencia Basket and the NBA. Ukrainian center Artem Pustovyi served as the team's defensive pillar, leading the frontcourt in blocks and efficiency.
The 2022–23 ACB season was the 53rd season in the history of Obradoiro CAB, and its 14th season overall in the Liga ACB. Under the continuing management of long-time head coach Moncho Fernández, the Galician team finished the regular season in 11th place with a 14–20 record, safely remaining in Spain's premier division. Obradoiro enjoyed highly competitive hot streaks throughout the year. The defining highlight of their campaign took place on December 3, 2022, when the team pulled off a dramatic 76–74 victory at home over eventual EuroLeague semifinalists FC Barcelona. The stars of the team were Dragan Bender, Kassius Robertson and Thomas Scrubb. Dragan Bender enjoyed a powerful resurgence, averaging 17.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in December. Kassius Robertson anchored the perimeter attack, pacing the squad with an outstanding 17.4 points per game and solidifying his place in the top of the league leaderboard. Canadian forward Thomas Scrubb served as the iron man of the lineup, playing all 34 games and chipping in 11.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest. Following the conclusion of the season, Obradoiro CAB earned a historic qualification to compete in the 2023–24 Basketball Champions League, marking the club's first-ever appearance in a major European continental competition.[13]
The 2023–24 ACB season was Obradoiro´s thirteenth season in a row in the Spanish top flight. On May 12th, 2024 Obradoiro got relegated to the Spanish 2nd tier (Primera FEB).[14]
On May 8th, 2026 Obradoiro got promoted again to the Spanish 1st tier (Liga ACB), after being crowned champions of the Primera FEB.[15]
