WikiCup 2026 July newsletter
[edit]The third round of the 2026 WikiCup ended on 28 June at 23:59 (UTC). As a reminder, good article nomination reviews now receive 10 points, while peer reviews, which continue to be worth 5 points, are now listed in the same section as featured article candidate reviews, rather than with good article reviews. Everyone who competed in round 3 will advance to round 4 unless they have withdrawn or been banned. No other changes to the round-point system have been made for this year.
Round 3 was competitive. Three contestants scored more than 1,000 round points; eight scored over 500; and thirteen scored over 300. The top three contestants had at least one featured article (two of them with two apiece). The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
MCE89 (submissions) with 1567 points, mainly from good and featured articles about Australian people and geography, as well as some article reviews
Bgsu98 (submissions) with 1547 points, mainly from good articles, featured articles, featured lists, and a good topic about figure skating, along with 20 article reviews
Reconrabbit (submissions) with 1004 points, mainly from a high-multiplier featured article on European rabbit and several good articles, DYKs, and reviews
A.Cython (submissions) with 1004 points, mainly from good articles about warfare, along with 22 article reviews
Generalissima (submissions) with 859 points, mainly from good and featured articles about rivers and East Asian topics
The full scores for round 3 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 12 featured articles, 12 featured lists, 7 featured-topic articles, 117 good articles, 74 good-topic articles and more than 30 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 13 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 180 reviews. The tournament points table has been updated.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed in Round 4. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Mana (series) at FAR
[edit]I have nominated Mana (series) for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured article criteria, or help improve the article. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" in regard to the article's featured status (see review instructions). 🍕BP!🍕 (🔔) 02:10, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
Hey there... Would you be okay with me bringing Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Figure skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics/archive1 over to FLC? The folks at FAC have decided after three full reviews that this article would be better suited at FLC instead, and quite honestly, it probably would be. I have two pending articles at FLC right now, but the Czechoslovak article is nearing completion, so this overlap of a third article wouldn't be for very long. Thank you so much! Bgsu98 (Talk) 18:37, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Bgsu98: While I think I agree that the table to prose ratio leans more list than article for that, I'd rather you wait until one of the existing nominations is closed rather than open a third, sorry. --PresN 03:40, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Go ahead and close the Dutch article then. Bgsu98 (Talk) 03:54, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Or you could promote the Czechoslovak article. Either works. 😉 Bgsu98 (Talk) 15:33, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's early for promotion but it would most likely have just sat there doing nothing for a week, so I just let it go. --PresN 15:35, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- I appreciate it either way! Bgsu98 (Talk) 15:42, 5 July 2026 (UTC)

Query about FLC suitability
[edit]Hi PresN, I'd appreciate your advice; KJP1 suggested I get in touch. I previously created Listed pubs in Manchester (which you kindly promoted), and since then I've been creating individual articles for the listed pubs across Greater Manchester's other nine boroughs, which now totals 134 entries (including Manchester's). I'm unsure whether creating a Greater Manchester‑wide "listed pubs" list would be appropriate for FLC, or whether it would clash with or duplicate the existing Listed pubs in Manchester page. Are there any guidelines on sub‑regional lists that might affect this? And if a GM‑wide list isn't ideal, would a City of Salford list (14 pubs) be a more sensible alternative, covering the other city within the region? For additional context, each borough's Buildings & Structures template now includes its listed and notable pubs, so readers can find them geographically without difficulty. Kind regards. Mmberney (talk) 15:38, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Just by way of context, I now recall that User:Reywas92 did flag the possibility of a Greater Manchester list at the FLC for Manchester pubs. I was clearly wrong in saying it would be too unwieldy - 134 is doable. They may also have a useful perspective. The US must hit similar issues in how to sub-divide, geographically or by function, buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. KJP1 (talk) 15:52, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Mmberney: It sounds like if you made a Greater Manchester list in a similar manner to the Manchester one, that the existing Manchester list would end up being a WP:CFORK, since it would have identical content to the 35 rows in the Greater list. Different content areas handle this problem differently, such as by having the overall list for a county have less detail on each item, and then the borough lists go into further detail, or by having the county list go into the full level of detail for the non-city pubs and then having the Manchester/Salford (maybe) lists stubbed out as sublists. That said, at 134 items, it's large but not so unreasonably massive that you couldn't just expand/replace the existing Manchester list with one on the entire county and then just have the one list. Are you planning on continuing on beyond that to other counties? If so, it may be worth thinking about what pattern works best for multiple counties. --PresN 16:59, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for your insights - there's definitely some food for thought. I hadn't really considered continuing into other counties; with England's multiple county definitions (48 ceremonial counties or 84 metropolitan and non‑metropolitan counties), it's quite a sprawling landscape, and my brain hurts a little just thinking about how large a project that could become. Greater London alone would likely have several hundred listed pubs. I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but it would take an awfully long time to complete.
- Part of the reason I started with Greater Manchester is simply that I live here, so it felt like a manageable and familiar place to begin. If the Manchester list were expanded to cover the rest of the city‑region, how would that affect its FL status? Would it be best to copy the existing text into draftspace to form part of the single Greater Manchester list, and then seek peer reviews before nominating - and before the Manchester list is subsequently deleted? If that makes sense. Mmberney (talk) 17:33, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Mmberney: It's always case-by-case when things like this happen; I think that I would be fine if you write it up in draftspace, and I'll look through it, and assuming it's all fine you could just copy it in to the existing Manchester list and then move the list to "Listed pubs in Greater Manchester", retaining the star. It would be a fairly large expansion of the existing list, but historical practice has been to not require a new review just because a list has changed over time (generally meaning dynamic lists that grow every year, but sometimes things like this). --PresN 18:00, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- @PresN: Hi again. Here's the Draft:Listed pubs in Greater Manchester article, which is hopefully in a finished-enough state for review. As an aside, I've just taken delivery of Hartwell, Hyde, and Pevsner's Buildings of England volume Lancashire: Manchester and the South-East (pinging @KJP1: you'll be pleased to learn!) so over the coming days I'll add the occasional quotation for the buildings it covers. I'd welcome any initial thoughts on the article in the meantime. Many thanks. Mmberney (talk) 08:19, 16 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Mmberney: Looks good to me! Feel free to expand/move the Manchester list whenever you want. --PresN 14:07, 16 July 2026 (UTC)

TFL notification for August 2026
[edit]Hi, PresN. I'm just posting to let you know that Nebula Award for Best Novel – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for August 3. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 00:21, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
SIA template on article page turns *off* SIA tagability on Wikiproject banners
[edit]Guessing you're aware of this already, but it does appear to be the culprit; when the Set Index Article template is on the article itself, having class=SIA does nothing. But removing it and having the banner template have class=SIA makes them properly flagged as SIAs.
Maybe a true/false check got inverted somewhere? Kung Fu Man (talk) 00:20, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Kung Fu Man: I had made a comment at Template talk:WikiProject banner shell#Article/page mess continues when I first saw it, but I never figured out what was the solution (or what in the code was causing it; it was part of a much larger code change by the template maintainer). --PresN 12:15, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah looking over Template: Set index article's coding I think everything is on the Wikiproject Banner end, so something must have gotten flipped or switched around. Gotta love old code that's been built on for several decades.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 12:44, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
Promotion of List of gerbillines
[edit]Adding to Hugo Award FT
[edit]Hi, I noticed recently that Hugo Award for Best Game or Interactive Work has been around for several years and hasn't been nominated for FL yet. Are you planning to nominate it soon? Mainly asking since you've been the primary editor for the Hugo Awards featured topic and if it isn't nominated soon, a FTRC would probably be due at this point. RunningTiger123 (talk) RunningTiger123 (talk) 02:43, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- @RunningTiger123: Yes, I meant to do that last year and then forgot. I'll nominate it this year after this year's awards are given. --PresN 02:47, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- No problem, I'm not that concerned about it (the formatting is pretty standard so any FLC should go quick), just a formality that should be done at some point. RunningTiger123 (talk) 02:56, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
Cillian Murphy on stage and screen
[edit]Hi there,
I had already addressed your comments regarding Cillian Murphy on stage and screen for featured list candidacy. I was wondering if it is satisfactory to you since MPGuy2824 seems to agree.
- @Birdienest81: Hi, I do promotion passes every few days. I'll check it out on the next one. --PresN 13:22, 28 July 2026 (UTC)

[edit]I might just bite the bullet and buy the book myself at some point, but I was curious how much was in there about the Odyssey 2. That's what I've been hunting for the most recently. If there's stuff on Imagic too, I'd be interested. Whipmywillows (talk) 15:27, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Whipmywillows: I’m out of town for a few days, but I’ll check later this week when I’m back. —PresN 21:24, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Whipmywillows: Sorry for taking so long; just sent you an email regarding this, or I can post photos on Discord if you're there. --PresN 12:44, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
Hongxi Emperor
[edit]I noticed your involvement in FAC and FLC nominations related to articles about the Ming dynasty. The articles on the first three Ming emperors, Hongwu, Jianwen, and Yongle, have now passed FA, and the FAC is now open for the Hongxi Emperor. I thought that with your past participation in the discussions, you might be interested in reviewing this nomination. Векочел (talk) 17:18, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

List of awards and nominations received by Brandon Flowers
[edit]Hello. Apologies for the random message. I have a question about the FLC for List of awards and nominations received by Brandon Flowers. I noticed that this list has only 16 wins and nominations (and apologies if I have miscounted). Is there a criteria or a minimum for having a separate awards and nominations list? I would think that this information could be housed in the main Brandon Flowers article. I had debated on raising this question on the FLC page, but the nomination has already attracted two reviews, so I was uncertain if I just had the wrong impression about this and I did not want to cause any unnecessary issues there. And I just wanted to know about this for my own knowledge. Thank you for your help, and I hope that you are having a wonderful start to your week. Aoba47 (talk) 03:46, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Aoba47: The list meets the minimum for FLC (8 items), but whether or not it would be better to put it in the parent article is a content discussion that is up to editors to decide rather than an FLC rule for delegates to decide. I think if you feel that it should not be a stand-alone list, then feel free to raise that point at the nomination. --PresN 12:39, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clarification. That makes sense to me. I was just curious about this. Aoba47 (talk) 14:49, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
Good article nominations RfC
[edit]Hi PresN,
There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.
By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.
Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:03, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
My upcoming vacation
[edit]Hi, PresN. You may have noticed that I've been making blurbs more frequently over the last few weeks. That's because I am planning to embark on a vacation next month, which should last a few weeks or so. Because the Internet situation while I will be away is up in the air, I'm trying to stockpile a batch of blurbs in advance so that TFL will be covered in case I can't work on them while away from home. While I should be able to take care of TFL before the trip, please be ready to handle the FLC closures while I'm gone, along with Hey man im josh, as I'm unsure whether closures will be feasible for me. Cheers. Giants2008 (Talk) 01:34, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Giants2008: No worries, have fun! If TFL gets low I'll stock it up, so don't worry about that. --PresN 02:06, 14 August 2026 (UTC)

Regarding edits to the List of rhinolophids
[edit]I am aware of WP:MAMMAL, but since BatNames (a list managed by the IUCN SSC Bat Specialist Group) recognizes the same 118 species as the ASM, I proceeded with the edit under the assumption that the classification had the backing of both organizations. WikiCup 2026 September newsletter
[edit]The fourth round of the 2026 WikiCup ended on 29 August at 23:59 (UTC). Everyone who competed in round 4 will advance to round 5 unless they have withdrawn or been removed. Round 4 was competitive, though slightly less so than round 3. Three contestants scored more than 1,000 round points; six scored over 500; and nine scored over 300. Each of the top five competitors had hundreds of points accumulated from multiple GAs. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Generalissima (submissions) with 1,318 points, mostly from 13 good articles and 3 featured articles about creeks and Chinese and Japanese subjects
Vanderwaalforces (submissions) with 1,208 points from 2 featured articles, 2 featured lists, and 12 good articles about African leaders, along with over two dozen reviews
A.Cython (submissions) with 1,084 points from 16 good articles and a small good topic about warfare and Greek elections, along with over two dozen reviews
Vestrian24Bio (submissions) with 955 points, mostly from 2 FLs, 2 featured topics, and 16 GAs about cricket, and almost two dozen reviews
Bgsu98 (submissions) with 837 points from 4 FLs and 8 GAs about figure skating, along with two dozen reviews
The full scores for round 4 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 10 featured articles, 11 featured lists, 8 featured-topic articles, 103 good articles, 6 good-topic articles and more than 30 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 11 In the News articles, and they have conducted 170 peer reviews, FA and GA reviews. The tournament points table has been updated.

Promotion of List of murines
[edit]Help with List of recovering species?
[edit]Hi. I created List of recovering species and I'm planning on nominating it for WP:Featured List someday. I just posted it at PR here, but that can sometimes take awhile. I noticed you have created several FL's related to biology. I've never created a list before, and although I have read the WP:FL criteria, I'm still not sure if I'm going down the correct road. If you have time, could you spend a few minutes glancing at List of recovering species and let me know if you see any major issues? No worries if you are too busy. Administrators' newsletter – October 2026
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2026).

- Following an RfC, the good article criteria have been amended to add accessibility requirements.
- Following an RfC, late signatures added to administrator recall petitions after 720 hours from opening are reverted or struck and do not count towards the threshold, even if the petition has not yet been formally closed.
- The post-May 2026 administrator elections RfCs concluded with consensus for election monitors to curate blatantly inappropriate questions after posting, and to remove or merge true duplicates, clearly marking merged questions. Calls for candidates will include advisory guidance that users with less than one year’s experience or 5,000 edits generally lack a realistic chance of success.
- Interface administrators no longer need to specify the
ResourceLoaderoption in the definitions for gadgets on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition as gadgets are always loaded throughResourceLoader. (T298199) - The
list=abusefiltersAPI module now supportsformatversion=2and includes breaking changes to its responses. In particular, theactionsproperty is now a JSON array rather than a string, regardless of the format version. Maintainers of user scripts and other code using this module should check compatibility and update their code as needed. (T435828)
- The arbitration case Gun control 2 has been closed.
- Doug Weller passed away on 30 September 2026. Doug Weller began editing Wikipedia in 2006 and became an administrator in 2008, making nearly 275,000 edits over two decades. He served on the Arbitration Committee from 2015 through 2018 and was also a longtime CheckUser and Oversighter.
- The October 2026 administrator elections are scheduled to run from September 29 to October 19. The call for candidates ends October 5.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2026 Arbitration Committee elections is opened and closes on 8 October.
- The Good Article Nominations backlog drive has begun and is scheduled to end on November 3.

The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 21:27, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
